The rain was falling relentlessly, thunder booming every so often.
This doesn't make my babysitting job an easier, you think to yourself
as you top both cups of hot cocoa with mini marshmallows. You
grab your mugs and make your way into the family room, all three
children crammed together on one couch. You hand the two younger girls their
hot cocoa. Mika, the eldest son, is the first to speak.
You promised I could tell my story, he said, jumping off the couch.
Just as long as you keep it G-rated. Lottie and Fliss hate scary stories, I say.
Mika dramatically sighs and nods his head.
Once upon a time, two years ago to be precise, Mom and Dad
let me go trick or treating, by myself. It was my first time
ever, and I was thrilled. I went with a group of my friends. We
literally hit every location in Neopia: Faerieland, Brightvale,
Kiko Lake... it was a blast. Our final destination was Haunted Woods.
Everyone knows that the Haunted Woods is at its all-time
creepiness during Halloween. Most of my buddies wimped out
once we started making our way through the thick, misty forest.
But not me. I was determined to trick or treat everywhere, no matter how
scary it was. By the time we reached the thick parts of the
forest, it was just me and Clyde. I won't lie, by this point I was getting
a little freaked out. It seemed like the forest had eyes.
Every time I stepped on a leaf or branch, I jumped a mile.
It was dark and chilly, the branches of the trees looking
like claws over my head. I heard something similar to a growl.
Surely I was imagining it, my mind simply playing tricks on me. But
Clyde heard it as well. We stopped dead in our tracks. We heard it again.
Clyde stared over my shoulder, and in slow motion pointed to
something behind me. I cautiously turned my head. Two long antenna
looking things attached to a little body caught my eye. Clyde screamed.
Was this just an innocent trick or treater, or something that lives
deep in the Haunted Woods that only comes out at night?
