There was no way she could go on. Kicking upwards, as soon as her head breached the surface she gulped in deep breaths of air. As her lungs filled with oxygen it became easier to tread water, and her chest's stinging began to retreat.
Flopping onto her back she stared up at the cloudless sky that stretched as far as her eye could see. The breeze that caressed her wet cheeks was gentle, humid. If only she could make it to land. Her limbs began growing heavy as she closed her eyes against the warmth of the sun. But she could not afford to submit to exhaustion, and so with a heavy sigh she kicked onto her stomach once more and began paddling towards what she hoped was solid ground.
Salt water splashed up into her face and for a moment she spluttered around trying to stop the burning in her eyes. Her flailing must have created quite the commotion underneath her, as a single moment passed before something - or someone, grabbed her by the ankle and pulled downwards.
