Amurei has spent so long running that sometimes he forgets he's running at all. He gets distracted, settles into a place and a routine, and wonders why he never thought to do this before. Living easy on stolen food and money without a care in the world is fantastic; why on earth hasn't he been a career bandit all his life?

And then the sun goes down and the moon rides high in the sky and he can almost feel it watching him. His thoughts return to the pendant wrapped tightly around neck and the mistake he made when he was but a small boy that destroyed his life. The artefact he stole and ran with; the one he later tarnished and compressed into the glowing stone that rests against his sternum.

The one that they would do anything to get back.

He feels his heart beat faster as he takes deep breaths through his snout in an attempt to calm himself. They're dangerous, but he's safe here. He's been here two weeks without a problem-- they have no idea where he is. Then he remembers the Crossroads. He remembers how he let his guard down; made a life for himself. How they found him and swarmed the town, burning it to its foundation in an attempt to flush him out. How he had barely escaped with his life.

And then he packs up camp and moves on, remembering exactly what he's running from.
