"Another day with nothing else to do," Meela the Shoyru sighed. "Let's see, I could go to the park and count blades of grass again... or maybe, I could alphabetise my keyring collection for the third time this week. Hmm, I wonder... would my new bizarre orange keyring go under B for bizarre, or O for orange? Well, it's not like I don't have all afternoon to decide."

Just then, Meela heard a knock at the door.

As she went to see who it was, Meela heard a slight rustling in the bushes. "Probably some practical joker," she muttered to herself. Despite her better judgement, Meela decided to answer the door anyway.

Turning the handle and looking out onto the porch, she saw a small wicker basket with a cream-coloured blanket inside. When Meela looked closer, she noticed the blanket was moving.

Pulling back the blanket, Meela was met with the longing stare of a homeless Blue Kadoatie. "Well, that's just great!" Meela sneered. "That's precisely what I need... some smelly, drooling Petpet to pick up after." Around its neck, the Kadoatie wore a collar, which held a tiny, rolled up note. Meela unrolled the note, which read:

To whom it may concern,
Run while you have the chance! I, too, made the mistake of taking in this miserable beast. It looked so cute, sitting there in the Petpet Shop. Well, let me tell you, every moment I spent with that wretched creature seemed like an eternity! The thing cried nonstop... I didn't sleep for days. Finally, I couldn't take it any more. At last, I've washed my hands of this blasted nuisance... she's your problem now!

                               My deepest sympathies,
                               xxx

The next few days were almost unbearable. No matter how hard she tried, Meela couldn't get her new Kadoatie, whom she'd named Soshi, to do anything but sit in the corner and wail. She tried buying toys and taking her to the park, but nothing seemed to work. When Meela went to bed, she had to leave the lights on, or else Soshi would keep her up all night, crying.

Meela decided to ask around, and see if any of her friends wanted Soshi, but no one would have anything to do with her. "I don't want to throw her out on the street," Meela thought to herself, "but I don't know how much more I can take."

Then one day, Meela awoke to find Soshi was gone.

She looked everywhere, under the pillows and behind cabinets, in the backyard and out by the front porch, over by the park and next to the Toy Shop, but Soshi was nowhere to be found.

Meela searched all over, asking everyone she met, "Have you seen my poor Soshi?"

Alas, no one had seen her wayward Kadoatie. She had searched all day, but to no avail. Now, as night fell, Meela started to wonder, what would become of her Soshi, who'd been so afraid of the dark? What would she do, out there... alone?

Meela continued searching for Soshi well into the night, but finally, she had no choice but to give up and head for home. Tears streamed down her face as she thought of her little lost Kadoatie, and the horrible fate it might have come to. As she staggered through the door, Meela heard a strange, shuffling sound come from her bedroom. Then, the air was filled with a sound she had come to love, the unmistakable ring of Soshi's melancholy wail. Meela ran to the bedroom, and sure enough, there she was...

"Soshi, it's you!" Meela shouted as she ran to hug her beloved Kadoatie. Soshi was noticeably annoyed by this sudden burst of affection, struggling to break free from her owner's embrace. "Soshi, you might be a pain in the neck, but you'll always be MY pain in the neck!"

So then, having realised how much she missed her Kadoatie, Meela learned to live with Soshi's irksome ways. She got used to sleeping with the lights on, and didn't mind it so much when she saw the others playing with their pets in the park. In fact, it's been ages since Meela and Soshi went out to the park, which is too bad, because that grass could use a good counting....
