Neopedia : The Day Krawk Island Went Away

Pirates in the Golden Dubloon The tavern is dark, still and silent. Well, almost silent... save for a single sailor, standing by a table full of other sailors. He's got a half-full mug in his hand, a smile on his lips, and a half-told tale hanging in the air.

"That's right, mateys," he says. "There ta see it, I was. Right there, a'standin' on me post, me peepers starin' right at it when the whole thing decided ta up and vanish just like it were made o' smoke."

The sailors all gasp, and he takes another drink from his mug.

"There ta see it, I was," he says. "The day ol' Krawk Island went away."

"We were there!" scoffs an Aisha. "Weren't that long ago, you old coot."

"Oh, not that time," the sailor replies lazily. "The first time. Ye've learned that Krawk Island is a bundle of islets, aye? Kept together by ropes an' anchors and the like? Well, breaking up into pieces ain't the same as vanishin' entirely."

He lets that line sit there for a moment, and then another. He looks at his mug, frowns, and holds it out. "Me mug, she's a little empty, she is."

The serving girl rushes forward with a pitcher to fill his mug back up, until it's almost overflowing.

"That's more like it," he says, his smile returning. "Well then... tells ya the tale, I will." He pauses, his eyes peering around the dim room. "An' ya'll ne'er believe it!"

What happened to the dubloons? It was an uneventful day. Not a cloud in the sky. No sign of storms, no hint of trouble.

That should have been the first hint.

Then, all over Krawk Island, weird things started happening. Little things at first, but as the day progressed, they got... even weirder.

Nobody could say the word "ice."

Dubloons turned into yellow flower petals.

Everything tasted like maple syrup.

Mysterious fog A little black bird landed on pirates' shoulders, telling them where a treasure was buried.

Then, without warning, Krawk Island disappeared off every nautical chart in Neopia. For one day, it wasn't there. Pirates sailing toward the island say a silver-grey mist swallowed the island whole. Anyone trying to sail through the mist got lost, turned around, and sailed right back out again. A few said they heard an evil cackling...

The next day, the island returned. Nobody on the island could say what happened; they didn't even remember the island disappearing. A few - just a few - remember a terrible dream, filled with wicked laughter, glowing black eyes... and nothing else.
