How to Choose a Petpet for Your Mutant Pet

by ellienib

--------

Mutant Pets have some of the coolest designs out there, but their customization options are a lot more limited than other Pets. If you want to give your Mutant some extra pizzazz on their lookup, giving them a Petpet is the way to go. But how can you possibly decide what to choose with so many Petpets out there? Well, you’re in luck, because I’m going to demonstrate some of my favourite strategies to find that perfect fit!

     Option 1: Spooky Petpets

They’re a classic for a reason, right? Mutant Pets and cute-but-creepy Petpets go together like peanut butter and Jellied Eyeballs.

For this category, I’ve chosen the Mutant Cybunny as a model. For this Pet, which has a lovely grey-coloured coat and charming red eyes, the Droolik would be my spooky Petpet of choice. This adorable little creature has a grey colour, soulful orange eyes, and long floppy ears just like the Cybunny. Drooliks aren’t the most active Petpets, making them the perfect companion for the Mutant Cybunny who likes to spend their days scheming.

But if you can’t stomach that price tag, the Gnar would be my next recommendation. This is more of a personality match- just look at that keen expression! I also find the blue of the Cybunny’s nose is nicely evoked by the fur on the Gnar’s head. If you have the budget for it, I think the Gnar looks especially striking when painted Black.

Pros: match a spooky theme well, often cheaper

Cons: may be too popular for those who want to stand out

     Option 2: Land of Origin

For those who want to think a little more creatively, choosing a Petpet that comes from the same land as your Pet’s species might be the way to go.

To represent this category, I’ve selected the Mutant Peophin, which originates from the beautiful land of Maraqua. This pet has a riot of colours from purple to gold that shine nearly iridescent in the light. The Peophin’s Maraquan heritage is reflected in its tentacles and the tendrils that make up its mane. I absolutely love the Neucloop as a companion for this pet. This playful creature is a bright gleaming blue that almost perfectly matches the Peophin’s mane. This Petpet can even have some fun contributions to the Peophin’s characterization, such as that it likes to ride on top of its owner’s head and form a mane with its tentacles.

A good compromise between choosing from the land of origin and choosing a spooky-themed Petpet is to look at the colours available for that Petpet. This Neucloop can be painted Zombie, which definitely gives it that eerie flair!

Pros: can tie in nicely to your pet’s backstory, more variety in themes and colour schemes, often cheaper

Cons: may not match your pet’s theme

     Option 3: Colour

Yes, there are Mutant Petpets, too! This is likely to be one of your more expensive options, as you have to choose your desired Petpet and then acquire a Mutant Petpet Paint Brush, but if you want the ultimate match, this is the way to go about it.

There are some great Mutant Petpets out there, and some of them have an uncanny resemblance to Mutant pets! The Mutant Nedler is an adorably miniaturized version of the Mutant Kau with its curving horns, black mouth-tentacles, and numerous beady eyes. The Mutant Zebba would be a stylish match for the Mutant Usul’s purple and black pelt and three yellow-red eyes. The Mutant Baby Blu is an obvious twin of the Mutant Blumaroo, but I actually prefer the Mutant Yullie with its round ears and super-cute green eyes.

If you don’t want an exact replica of your Pet, there are some other Petpets that share similar traits while still being unique. The Mutant Ona’s beautiful red and chartreuse colour scheme is reminiscent of the Mutant Jetsam. With its striking colours, the Mutant Quetzal would make a great match for the Mutant Pteri. The Mutant Bubbles is covered in spikes like the Mutant Nimmo.

Pros: close match in appearance and aura, good for spooky-themed Pets

Cons: much more expensive, more limited selection

     Option 4: Overall Impression

There are some Neopet-Petpet pairings that just work, even if you might not be able to put a finger on why. This is entirely subjective and depends a lot on your customization choices, your Pet’s characterization, and even the layout you’ve chosen. A once-beautiful princess cursed to appear as a Mutant Ixi might still have her loyal Pink Faellie by her side. A Mutant Lenny might have taken command of a flock of Vullard to lead an aerial attack against his opponents. The colourful and fun-loving Mutant Ogrin might take to the dance floor with their beloved Disco Acko at their heels. Whatever the rationale might be, there might be an out-of-the-ordinary Petpet out there that is the secret perfect fit for your pet.

Pros: highly creative and matched to your particular pet, high sentimental value

Cons: requires more effort, overwhelming number of options, difficult to narrow down, can be expensive

As you can see, there are so many different ways to decide what Petpet to choose for your precious Mutant, and there’s no such thing as a bad choice here. Whether you decide to go with a menacing Werhond or a not-so-menacing Floud, the important thing is that you and your pet are happy with your decision.

I hope this article has provided you with some inspiration to help guide you on your search for the perfect Petpet. These categories that I have described are by no means the only way you should make your decision, but I hope it will help you narrow down what you are most looking for in a Petpet instead of having to click aimlessly through the Petpet Puddle. No matter what ends up being the most important trait in a Petpet to you, with hundreds of different Petpets out there, you are sure to find something that makes everyone happy. I wish you the best of luck with your search!
