Potions, Elixirs, Tonics, and Their Wondrous Uses

by mewemy

--------

Neopia is filled with many kinds of items such as medicines, books, stamps, training aids, cards, toys, the list goes on and on. One particular set of items has intrigued me more than any other however. So much so, that I began collecting them and made a gallery filled of this wonderful item in all its beautiful varieties. No, I’m not talking about Neggs or Usukis. I’m talking about potions.

There is just something about the different shaped glass bottles warped into every configuration imaginable. The liquid contained inside glistening in so many hues. The most alluring aspect of all is the mystery behind what will happen if one were to drink it. Will my pet be poisoned, his stats increased, will he become sick, perhaps he will transform into a beautiful Draik, or maybe nothing will happen at all? There are so many potions out there, many of which can be purchased in Kauvara’s magic shop located right next to the Pharmacy in Neopia Central.

As I sat there staring at my wonderful collection of glass elixirs I thought to myself, enough is enough, I need to know the effects of all these potions, after all what if my pets were to accidentally drink one that could cause harm? They needed to know this information too and it has become my duty to type it out for not only my pets safety and knowledge but for the rest of the pets in Neopia as well. This is part one of a two part article of potion effects. This article details some of the more obvious potion effects as a starting point.

I’ll begin with the most apparent, morphing potions. Morphing potions are pretty cool as they transform both the species and the color of the pet that drinks it. For example, your plain boring Yellow Poogle can instantly become a gorgeous Faerie Xweetok with just one swig of the Faerie Xweetok Morphing Potion. Each bottle has the color, species, and term ‘morphing potion’ in the name which is why I said it’s the most obvious. Some of these potions are really pretty like the ones for the Faerie Draik, Maraquan Kacheek, Darigan Ixi, and Royal Girl Kyrii. The potions for the cheaper pets are more plain looking but still do the trick. Baby potions are neat in that they all look like baby bottles, how clever! Whenever you want to paint a pet, stop, and check the price of the morphing potion first and compare it to what the paint brush costs. You’d be surprised to find how many morphing potions are actually cheaper than their paint brush counterpart and you can even search for morphing potions on the super shop wizard, unlike paint brushes.

For all the mutant pet fans out there who got excited and rushed to the bank ready to buy a mutant morphing potion only to find out that there aren’t any, don’t fret! They exist but under a different name, transmogrification potion. Transmog potions have a pretty rough back story. Kauvara, the popular magical Starry Kau who runs the magic shop was visited by a mysterious stranger one day. The stranger sold her a handful of Transmog potions claiming that they were ‘the most phenomenal elixirs to ever hit the market’, not telling her that they turn pets into cold mutants. She was devastated when beautiful pets began to turn into monsters before her very eyes without their consent. You can still purchase these potions today, if making your pet into a monster is in fact your intention, but you’ve been warned! Dr. Sloth has been seen giving these potions out in random events and there is even an avatar to be earned if your pet is brave enough to drink one.

Another potion type with obvious effects are healing potions. Most of the healing potions are simply titled Healing Potion followed by a numeric roman numeral. The higher the number, the more hp your pet will be healed if he/she happened to be injured in the Battledome, from the Snowager, or from just clumsily tripping when getting out of bed. Not only are these potions differentiated by their number they also come in a pretty array of colors and many can be purchased fairly cheaply at the healing springs. The water faerie might even give you one for free if she’s in a good mood!

Aside from the standard healing potions with the Roman numerals there are many others as well, such as Healing Springs Residue (randomly heals 1hp-100% your max hp), Leminty Elixir of Healing (chance of doing nothing or giving a 100% heal), Lutari Healing Potion (heals 22hp and works on all species despite its name), Mystical Health Potion (the newest health potion from Legends and Letters that’s a no trade item and heals 10hp), Super Strength Healing Potion (a cheap and great choice with a 225hp heal every time), as well as many others. Chances are that if the potion has health or healing in its name that it has healing effects.

There are however, potions that restore health that you probably didn’t even know had that ability. Triple Slushie Mix for example sounds like a delicious treat but it’s actually a potion that can heal your pet of 90hp. Super Strength Potion sounds like it would increase your pets strength but it’s actually a healer as well, restoring 15hp. Marrow Tonic water heals 7hp, not a lot but it’s cheap! Kayla even has a whole line of health potions titled, Kaylas Little Pick Me Up, Kaylas Silver Brew, and Kaylas Golden Brew (Healing 15hp, 50% of your hp, and 100% of your hp respectively).

All the potions I’ve named thus far you might have already known about, however there are some potions out there much more mysterious with even more interesting effects. Be sure to stick around for part two of this article to discover the secrets behind some of the more puzzling vials on the market such as Selket Elixir, Fire Jug, bullseye potion, and many others! I hope you’re as fascinated by these magical liquids as I am, stay tuned!
