Bored at the Beach?

--------

THE BEACH ~~~ Pets all over Neopia come to the Beach for one thing or another. Some Kacheeks come to have an avatar drop on their heads. A fair few come to soak up some rays or play in the water. Then there's the pets that want to play a little Volleyball with their friends. I bet you've watched them one time or another, wincing with every miss and squawking with each hit Pawkeet. Well, at least that's what my owner, Niddyz, does.

Hello, reader. My name is Ramaj and I'm here to show you just how to beat Mynci Beach Volleyball. Yes, I'm a female Usul, but that doesn't mean I don't know how to play the game! Here, I'll show you. Furtiop, my Chezzoom, is going to help me out with a few lovely posters I've made. The first one he's bringing out is on the basics of the game, so why don't we start there?

How to Play: Use the left and right arrow keys to move your Mynci (the blue one on the left in One Player Mode) and get the ball over the net to your opponent. Use the up arrow to jump for an extra kick. You score a point each time your opponent misses the ball. Get to 12 points first and advance to the next round. There are six rounds in total.

Sounds easy, doesn't it? Well, it's about to get a bit tougher. Furtiop, next, please.

The Pawkeet: From time to time you'll see a little green Pawkeet show up somewhere on the screen. Boink him with the ball and you'll make something happen.

A little later on I'll show you what damage this little guy can do. For now, it's time to tell you some basic strategy. Furtiop!

Serving: Whenever you score a point or start a new round, you get to serve the ball over to your opponent. I find it best to move back and forth across my side of the net a couple of times to get some momentum going, then jump just before I slam into the net. This gives the ball the best chance of your opponent missing. If all goes well, it will bounce off the wall at this certain angle and make your opponent miss. If not, your opponent still has to go after the ball pretty far back in his territory.

Defending: Your opponent has the ball and he's shooting it back to you. What now? Well, you need to stay pretty much in the middle of your side after you get the ball over the net and just wait for the ball to come back to you. Have the front part of your head connect with the ball, jump if you aren't very close to the net, and (hopefully) watch the ball soar into your opponent's court. He also likes to keep the ball in his court and bounce it off the back wall. Don't get your hopes up; I've seen him make the craziest saves when he's on the ropes.

So far, so good. You know how to serve, and you've learned how to stop your opponent from easily scoring on you. Seems like you've gotten pretty skilled at this! Now, it's time for the luck factor. Move it, Furtiop!

Effects (in no particular order):

1. Small Net - This makes the net a whole lot smaller. It's okay for you, because you don't have to jump as much to get the ball over the net. However, your opponent also gets this plus as well, so you need to watch out for "Spikes" on this effect. A "spike" is when you see the ball coming straight at the net and you think it's going to bounce off of it when it suddenly shoots just a hair over it and speeds straight towards your head. The best way to defend against one of these is to just stay very close to the middle and keep a keen eye on that ball.

2. Big Net - This is the direct opposite of the small net and will replace it, and vice versa. This, as its name implies, makes the net very large and tall. You need to keep the ball far back and jump to get it over the net. It's a bit tough to do when you're still learning the game, but eventually you'll get into the swing of it. What's also nice about the big net is that your opponent has a tough time of making the ball over as well, which can mean some easy points for you.

3. Giant Ball - Don't be fooled. A larger ball may seem wonderful, but remember that you only score points if Mr. Red Mynci messes up. With a larger ball, it's unlikely that he'll do so. Luckily, this doesn't last for long as most effects will send the enlarged ball off to some random circus somewhere to perform for Bags of Peanuts. Mmmm....peanuts!

4. Supersize - My all-time personal favorite. This makes you larger, therefore increasing your chance of hitting the ball. You also get a little extra oomph in your hits, which is very nice. Just don't get too confident; you can still miss the ball. This goes away after some effects, but not all of them.

5. Watch the Turdle! - This can be just plain rude at times, or the lifesaver for your tired little fingers. What this effect does is bring a Turdle up on the opposite side of whomever hit the ball last. If you run into that Turdle, you'll be stopped right where you are for a few seconds or so. Unfortunately, a few seconds is all it takes for a point to be scored. It's great when your opponent is stuck, but not so wonderful for you. Avoid it when you have the ball in your court, but go ahead and step on him if your opponent is occupied with the ball. He will fade after you step on him and your delay is done, or if he isn't stepped on for a long bit of time.

6. Superjump - Another one to watch out for. This can be a downright menace in any level. Superjump increases the height of your jump to outrageous levels, which certainly sounds nice. What's not so nice about it is that it takes a bit to get down from those lofty heights as well, allowing your opponent to get in a swift point before you can recover and defend. If your opponent gets it, cheer. That Mynci will screw up more times than a first-timer at the Employment Agency. It will go away when some effects are activated, but not when you get the next one...

7. Superspeed - If you get this and also have the above effect, pray that you can get rid of that Superjump soon. This speedy "buff" more than often sends you to your doom, as you move too quickly for you to block the ball adequately. Try adding that to a Superjump, and the points rack up for your opponent. Speaking of that, if Mr. Mynci on the other side gets both this and the Jump, count your blessings. Superspeed, most annoyingly, never goes away until the next round (or so it seems).

I'm sure I'm wearing poor Furtiop out, but I think he needs this. I personally thought he was getting a bit chubby. Well, this is the last poster I have for you, and it's the scoring one.

Scoring: To get 1000 NP, you need 500 points. You get 50 points for beating a round, and 10 points for each point you scored more than your opponent. For example, if you win Round One 12 - 7, you get 100 points. When you beat Round Six, you get a 250 points for beating it instead of the normal 50.

I sure hope you benefited from my article; Furty did. Maybe I should write some more, my sister's Mongmong could use a little sprucing up...Anyhoo, have fun playing and take care of yourselves!
