It was any other day in Neopia, Doros was having his
usual breakfast of scrambled Neggs and a Joint
of Ham. Doros was a blue Shoyru, and Kiwi's only pet. But he was
happy. He could never think of sharing her with anybody. He sat happily
finishing what was left of his Negg and turned to Kiwi.
"What are we going to do today momma?" he asked.
"Well Doros," she said with a smile, "we are going into
town today."
"Ooooh!" he cried happily, "Are we going to the toy
store? Because on my way home from Addie's house I saw-"
"No, we're not going to the toy store."
He seemed disappointed, but then his eyes lit up, "then
we must be going to get some candy at the Chocolate Factory!" he squealed.
"No, not that either," she was still smiling.
Doros was confused, she was always going into town to
get him new toys or treats, why was she going into town if she didn't
plan on buying him things?
"We're going to get you a new brother!" Kiwi said happily.
Doros's look of confusion turned to utter horror. Another
pet? But he'd been her one and only pet for at least a year, he'd gotten
all the love, all the toys and food. What was going to happen to him?
"I'll be forgotten!" he thought frantically.
"No!" he yelled, "I don't need a brother, I'm happy as
I am! Please, no!" But Kiwi was determined, and soon she and Doros were
standing in front of the Create a Pet Center.
"Now, stay here and be a good little Shoyru, Doros. I'll
be back soon."
He sat there, still amazed that his loving owner would
do this to him. "She must not love me." He finally concluded, and sat
down to cry.
Then, Kiwi came out with a small bundle in her arms.
It was a small baby Blumaroo.
"This is your new brother," she said happily, "his name
is Softon, say hello to Doros, Softon!" Softon cooed and gurgled in a
happy way, but Doros just looked away.
For the next week it seemed Softon was getting all the
attention. When they went to the shops Softon was bought toys, and Doros,
who had always gotten what he wanted, found that many times Kiwi had said
to him, "there's three of us now, Doros, I can't afford to get you everything
you want anymore." Because of this, Doros began to be mean to Softon.
It seemed like a competition for attention, and he was losing. He finally
concluded that Softon was the enemy, and he didn't so much as look at
him.
Then, one night it all changed....
Doros was tucked in his warm bed, the blankets pulled
tight around himself, sweetly dreaming about candy and sweets. But then,
he suddenly woke up in a fit of coughs. He looked around, the house was
on fire! He jumped out of bed and ran to Kiwi's room. She was completely
knocked out, she had taken in too much smoke. Doros quickly dragged her
out of the burning building.
He was about to run to the neighbours to call for help,
but he heard something coming from the house, like something screaming.
Then he realised, Softon was still in the house! The fire was pretty bad
now, even if help came they wouldn't be able to save Softon in time.
Right then, all his bad thoughts and hate towards the
little Blumaroo disappeared, and he found himself rushing into the house
to find his little brother. The heat was unbearable, and it hurt him,
but his courage prevailed and he finally got to Softon's room. He had
made it just in time, the little Blumaroo was still in his crib, but the
crib was on fire! Doros grabbed him and ran towards the outside, but a
wall of flames blocked his way. There was no other way out, so he wrapped
his wings around himself and Softon, then he ran as fast as he could out
the window, collapsing to the ground immediately after.
When he woke up he was in the Neopian Hospital. His wings
had been torched a bit, but he was OK. Kiwi was standing by his side with
Softon wrapped in a soft yellow blanket.
"Can I hold him?" Doros croaked weakly. Kiwi agreed and
handed the bundle to him, thanking him endlessly for his bravery, but
he didn't even notice.
"Hey little guy," he said, "I know we got off on the
wrong paw, but I'm Doros and I'm your big brother." Softon cooed a happy
reply.
And they've been just as close ever since.
