Brotherhood

“B-but… I WANT IT!” sobbed Poogy, tears welling up in her eyes.

Pogii shook his head vigorously. “No, Poogy,” he insisted desperately. “Draco is mine!”

“*Sniff*! I want it!” choked Poogy, scrabbling for the Baby Vampire in Pogii’s arms. Pogii sighed. He saw Polly and Pixy watching him closely, their own PetPets clutched in their arms. Poogy the Poogle was the most recent addition to Pogii’s family of Poogles, and she had not yet gotten a PetPet of her own. She had fallen in love with Draco, Pogii’s Baby Vampire. Pogii remembered his owner’s words:

“Remember, Pogii! You are the eldest, and you need to set a good example! Be generous, and then Pixy and Polly and Poogy will also be generous. Be polite, and then they will be polite. They are influenced by you, their elder brother. You need to be responsible!”

Pogii did not want to let his owner down. He sighed and nuzzled into Draco’s leathery coat. Draco began to chew Pogii’s ear. Pogii shed a tear, but he smiled weakly. “Good-bye,” he whispered, and handed Draco to Poogy. Poogy squealed with delight and scurried off with Draco. Pogii sighed. Pixy trotted over and hugged Pogii.

“I’m proud of you, Pogii!” she said warmly.

Pogii shrugged and sloped off to his room. He was depressed.

“I’m home you guys!” The owner had come back from shopping. “Pogii, Pixy, Polly, Poogy! Get in here! I've got something to show you!”

Pogii slowly descended the stairs and joined his sisters around the kitchen table. His owner smiled and took out a box. She saw Poogy and beamed. “This is for you!” she exclaimed cheerily, and pulled out a little Meekins PetPet. Pixy and Polly gasped at its beauty. Poogy screeched with delight, dropped Draco and took the Meekins in her arms instead. Draco, feeling neglected, made way for the open window, where he flew away into the sky.

“NO!” Pogii screamed, leaping out on his dainty paws. But he could not stay airborne – he had no wings. He lay sobbing on the grass in the garden, watching the tiny speck that was Draco getting smaller by the minute. His owner came and gave him a cuddle, cradling him in her arms.

“Pogii, Polly told me what you did. It was very noble of you. I’m proud of you, dear!”

Pogii tore away and sprinted up to his room. He refused to speak to anyone. Time passed…

“Hey! Meathead!” The Skeith and Grarrl and Jetsam sniggered and threw another mud-clod in Pogii’s eye. Pogii rubbed it off, his face growing hot. He despised the hateful bullies, who were picking on him once more. He tried to make a run for it, but the Grarrl grabbed his back legs and the Jetsam his front paws, and the Skeith began to hit him in the stomach.

“Hey, you big bullies! Leave my big brother alone!”

Pogii opened his eyes to see Poogy standing crossly on the sidewalk with the Meekins on a lead.

“Get lost, Pikachu!” sneered the Jetsam.

Poogy began to cry. “Leave Pogii alone!” she screamed. The Grarrl roared and threw a mud-clod in Poogy’s eye. Pogii felt rage boil up inside him. He struggled free, and began to pound on the bullies. “How dare you hit my sister!” he shouted. Then he felt his owner’s arms tearing him away…

“A is for apple…” Pogii was sat on the carpet with his brother and sisters, teaching Poogy to read. He had forgiven her, and they were all one big happy family again. Their owner watched happily from the doorway.

“Pogii,” she beckoned. “I have something for you!”

Pogii abandoned his teaching and scampered over to her. She pulled a box out from behind her back. He lifted the lid, and saw… a little Tigermouse inside!

“He’s all yours!” said his owner.

“Thanks so much!” said Pogii in delight, hugging his owner tight. He clutched his new Tigermouse to his chest and nuzzled into its red fur. It began to chew his ear.
