The Bestest Friend

by watermelon3000

The green Aisha had recently moved from her tiny village at the Mystery Island to Neopia, where her great Aunt Jainie lived. She hated the thought of living in an extremely crowded city with thousands of residents always worrying about NP or being poor. Even more horrifying was the fact that she had to go to school with them in a hot, stuffy, crowded classroom. And it was always so cold in Neopia. Back at her old home in the Mystery Island, the sun shone brightly everyday.

It had been a week since the Aisha had come to Neopia. Her Aunt Jainie thought that it would be better to send her off to school when she had adjusted to her new surroundings. The green Aisha had been sent down to the Food Shop to get groceries one day.

She entered the small house and waddled to the kitchen, where a strange smell lingered in the air.

Sniffing curiously, she set the groceries on the counter. "What's that smell?" she replied, holding her nose.

Aunt Jainie turned around. "Oh, you're back. It's only Pizza, Jamirosa."

Jamirosa pouted. "It's Jamie," she said stiffly.

Aunt Jainie smiled. "I like Rosa better as a nickname. Or Rose."

"It's Jamie!"

"Fine, fine, fine." Aunt Jainie returned to the stove. She removed the pizza from the oven and set it on the table. "Lunchtime!" she announced.

"I can see," Jamie said through gritted teeth. "I'm right here. You don't have to announce it to the entire world."

They sat down and started eating.

Jamie chewed, swallowed, and grimaced. "This stuff's too plain," she complained. "Can' t you get any red juppies or fruitmallows?"

"Sorry, hon, this is the only food I've got," answered Aunt Jainie. "By the way, I enrolled you to the Neopian Village School. Your first day of school will be tomorrow."

"What?!" Jamie spit out the lemonade she was drinking. "You can't do that! You haven't bought my schoolbooks and supplies! I haven't even made any friends! I won't know anyone there!"

"You'll make friends. That's what school's for. And don't worry about the school supplies, I bought them yesterday," replied Aunt Jainie.

Jamie pouted and sank in her chair. "No one would want to be friends with a half Alien Aisha, one fourth Fire Faerie and one fourth Aisha freak," she said regretfully.

Aunt Jainie patted her on the head. "So what if your mother was an Alien Aisha and your father was half Aisha, half Fire Faerie?"

"It means I'm a freak! I'm not even really Aisha! So are the twins, but you know what happened to them, and the rest of my family. . ." Jamie trailed off. She could remember what had happened. That was why she was living with her great aunt in the first place.

The village she lived in was located at the foot of the volcano at the Mystery Island. Jamie had two twin sisters, Helenasosa and Merenasosa, or Helena and Merena. One day, the volcano erupted and buried the village in lava, killing everyone there. Jamie had survived, being deep in the rain forest picking fruitmallows with some other girls at the time.

The only living relative Jamie had was Aunt Jainie, so Jamie had to live with Aunt Jainie in Neopia. Sitting in the chair, Jamie cursed the volcano in her mind.

"Well, you should relax for the rest of the day," announced Aunt Jainie, standing up. "Tomorrow's the big day. Go watch some TV until dinnertime." She shooed Jamie out of the kitchen.

Jamie plopped down on the couch and flipped it on. She couldn't see why Neopia needed television; in her old home the elders made enjoying shadow puppet shows at night. They didn't waste money or electricity and made more sense than the Neopian shows on TV. Tears filled her eyes as she thought of those wonderful memories. She immediately shook them away and told herself it was foolish to cry. Jamie concentrated on the TV, which was advertising a company that sold spicy wings. Sighing, she thought about tomorrow and dreaded the next day.

The next day, Jamie dragged her feet up the stone steps of the Neopian Village School. She watched as hundreds of pets made their way up the steps to their classrooms.

She arrived at one that said 'Mrs. Williasis, Room 219' on the door. She looked at the paper slip that said her classroom and opened the door. There were thirty or forty students in there. Most of them were throwing paper planes and spitballs. The teacher was obviously not there. Jamie ducked as a spitball barely missed her. At the Mystery Island, she had been taught at the Training School how to do such things. Some boys whistled and smiled mischievously.

"Hey, are you lost, or something, 'cause this ain't your classroom!?" a red Nimmo yelled. Jamie tossed her head.

"This is my classroom. I'm new here."

"Yes! Score!" The Nimmo turned around. "Hey everyone, there's a new kid here!"

People turned and looked at Jamie. She sat down nervously in an unoccupied seat and waited for the bell to ring. The bell rang. The door opened, and a blue Wocky with spectacles and a blue dress entered.

"Settle down, class," she announced. The class quieted and everyone took their seats.

"We have a new student here," she announced. "Her name is Jamirosa. Please stand up, Jamirosa!"

"Will the real Slim Shady please stand up!" some boys said in the back.

Jamie stood up and walked up nervously. "It's Jamie," she said.

"Uh, yes, Jamie, tell us about you," Mrs. Williasis replied. Jamie stiffened.

"I came from the Mystery Island to live with my great Aunt Jainie after my family died in a volcanic explosion."

"Really? Who?" the teacher said nosily. Jamie stiffened even more.

"It's none of your business." She sat down and sighed, despite sniggers and staring from her classmates.

The day wasn't too good. No one liked her at all. The popular girls pushed her and the mischievous boys teased her. The nerdy pets ignored her and the bullying pets fought her. Some were impressed with her martial arts skills, but because she was the new kid, they ignored her.

The next day was no better. And so was the day after that. And that. And that. It was an entire week before a shy little yellow Kacheek approached her. "I like your fighting skills," she whispered admiringly.

"Really?" Jamie asked, surprised. She nodded.

"You learned at the Training School, right?"

"Yes, yes!" They launched into a conversation and soon became fast friends. Word soon leaked out that Jamie was half Alien Aisha and one fourth Fire Faerie. Kids laughed at her. "Who would wanna marry an Alien Aisha? And especially someone half Fire Faerie and half Aisha! Your father must have been desperate! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahah ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!" (I was trying to recreate the week's worth of haha's, but I think I would run out of room.) Jamie was miserable.

"You don't hate me because I'm - you know - right?"

Sindy the Kacheek that had befriended her said, "Of course not. In fact, you're lucky. You must have lots of magical powers."

They stayed friends through the entire crisis. Jamie, of course, turned out to have lots of magical powers. She became a famous superstar. Sindy worked out well, too. She became a stock broker for the Neopian Stock Market. Without Sindy, Jamie would have never survived. She thought that Sindy was a godsend, perhaps from her long lost family. Whenever one of the pets that had teased during school her tried to approach her because she was famous in the future, she turned him or her into a toad. Muahahah ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah ahaha! (It goes on forever.)

And up in the clouds, Jamie's twin sisters laughed as they watched Jamie turn another pet into a toad. Perhaps who you are matters more in the inside.
