Hi. My name's Silversteel. I'm a blue Lupe. People call me superstitious, but
I'm really not. I'm just a firm believer in fate and luck. Yeah, I know, I'm
lucky. Not many Lupes can hope to win the Battledome Championships! But my owner
Kat says it was meant to be.
I didn't start off like this, though. When I was very young, my old owner abandoned
me. We lived in a big, fancy house with other pets, but I seem to remember that
none of them were older than me except for a very snobbish green Uni, who my
owner rode.
One day, when I had just turned two days old, my owner (I think his name was
Nick) woke me up very early and said he was going to take me on a special trip.
Well, I was very excited. I grabbed my favourite stuffed Chia, but he said I
wouldn't need it because he was going to buy me a lot of better ones today.
So I left it at home.
Nick mounted his Uni, and pulled me up after him and sat me on the front of
the saddle. I hung on tight to the Uni's mane, and away we went. We went down
to a building I'd never seen before, where there were two doors. I couldn't
read very well, but I understood their meaning. One said 'Abandon' and one said
'Adoption'. I thought we were going to adopt a new pet.
Nick took me up to the desk, and put 80 neopoints down. The old woman behind
the desk took the money, and led me off. I went happily enough before I realised
that Nick wasn't coming too. Then, I saw which door we were going towards. The
word, 'Abandon' loomed over me like an evil face, and I screamed for my mum.
Nick got back on his Uni and rode off. The old woman tried to push me into a
tiny wire cage, but I pushed back. I'm quite strong. Eventually, she won because
I was still very young. I lay on the floor of my cage, and cried myself to sleep.
I spent three days in the pound.
Eventually, a nice girl came in with her other pet. It was a Kougra. She looked
down the lines of cages, and I saw that she was crying. I jumped up and pushed
my nose against the wire. The girl saw me, and came over. I put on my best show,
and she laughed through her tears when she saw it. I knew she was going to adopt
me. It was obviously meant to be.
She took me out of the cage and out into the fresh air. I felt like I could
fly, I was that happy. The girl took me home, and gave me a huge lunch. The
house was small, and messy, and all the toys were battered, but it was better
than Nick's house. That afternoon, Wildfire the Kougra and I ran races all over
the tiny garden. Wildfire won them all, because she was faster than me, but
when we played Rough and Tumble I won because I was stronger. We were great
friends.
The next day, Kat took us to the Training School in Mystery Island. She spent
all her money on two courses for us each, and she had to sell a lot of our toys
and furniture. But we didn't mind, because we both liked the idea of winning
tournaments, getting lots of money and being famous. The courses exhausted us
both, but Kat had made enough money in her shop and with odd jobs to buy us
equipment, and even faeries if we were lucky. Once again., she spent all her
money on making us a force to be reckoned with.
Well, we went into the Battledome scared and nervous, but we came out winners!
I carried on fighting after that. I just couldn't get enough of the atmosphere
at a good battle. Wildfire stopped because she wasn't strong enough to fight
the really high-level people, but a few pet owners started a little racing track
and Wildfire did brilliantly on that.
After the first few battles, Kat upgraded her shop and a lot more people visited.
We got to be quite rich, but Kat never forgot how we started and always, always
put donations out at the money tree and gave poor people very cheap food. She
didn't want anyone to have to put their pets up for adoption. So, now you see
why I say it was meant to be.
