"Run, Scorchio, run! They're right behind you!" tittered birds overhead.
Scorchio, a small ice blue Shoyru, glanced hastily over his shoulder. By accident,
he had been practicing his newly earned powers in a forest clearing, and sent
a fireball towards a clan of trolls. Three ugly brutes now lumbered after him,
swinging their clubs with vengeance. Scorchio thought quickly, and dashed up
a nearby tree. When the three trolls reached the tree, they looked around with
confused grunts in Ogrese, their language.
Now, trolls aren't exactly too bright. The largest one spoke: "We get him next
time. He not go far!" And with that the three crashed back into the depths of
the lush forest.
"Whew! Just my luck, to be chased by those idiots. So I can't control my powers
yet. It was their fault that they were holding a party…" muttered Scorchio,
hopping down from his perch.
He slowly made his way back to the edge of the forest, where the base of a
great volcano stood. Scorchio lived on an enchanted isle that floated over all
the waters of the world. It wasn't a very large island; it was more like a miniature
planet. The island was divided up into many incredible areas: there was the
towering volcano that was located in the middle of the isle, the vast Desert
of Many Waters, the Crystal Pine Forest, the Valley of Snow, and many other
places. You could be in a dry desert one moment, and then step into a winter
wonderland the next! Each one hid many rare animals and creatures, like trolls,
dragons, and even faeries!
As he reached the forest edge, he saw the magnificent volcano towering above
the island splendor, it's smoking mouth submerged in the overhead clouds. Suddenly,
the usually forget-me-not blue sky darkened angrily as black clouds crashed
together. Before Scorchio's eyes an orb of glowing white light came towards
him, growing larger as it came nearer. Scorchio took a frightened step backwards,
and the orb gave a final glow as it transformed into a tall, slender woman with
golden blond hair and cold blue eyes.
"The Light Faerie!" breathed Scorchio incredulously. A pair of snow-white wings
then unfolded behind her back to confirm his thoughts.
"So, my dear little dragon… Been trying out your new powers, eh?" Her melodious
voice wafted through the trees, causing several animals to come and gaze at
her omnipotence. "Hmm. I think you have been playing long enough. I have come
to give you-"
A clash of thunder shattered the stillness, "a new Quest!"
Her audience gasped dramatically, and Scorchio nodded sadly. Light Faerie Quests
were known far and wide to be extremely long and hard. With a poof of smoke
the faerie disappeared.
Scorchio then realized something. "Whoa, hey, wait, your, er, majesty! You
didn't tell me what to look for! Hello?!" he called desperately.
But there was no answer……
