Northern Reaches
Shadad awoke earlier than usual to discover that the sun was higher in
the sky than it normally was. Wind whistling still through the mountains
Shadad walked outside his ice cavern and stared straight at nothing with
his silver eyes. An air drifted around the mountain. Not as cold as usual.
A sterile and lifeless wind that was as hard to explain as comprehend.
Though no one else could see it, Shadad clearly saw a swirling light blue
Uni sitting in front of him. Staring at him with two crystal blue eyes.
"What is it you want form me Uni" Shadad said. Speaking in the voice
of the mountain. Sounding like it. His raw power obviously made the Uni
uncomfortable. He knew by it's eyes and it's body language. But, like
most Lupe, he could tell most by the smell.
"I have sought you out white Shadad so that you may assist me," the
voice was like a light fog rolling out of the creatures mouth. So light
Shadad could barely hear. Shadad's Lupe ears could quickly find the pitch.
So it was as plain as day, "Shadad the Lupe, do you see me?"
"As plain as mountain snow."
"Then you must be the one........" Shadad had every intent of waiting
out the Uni awkward pause. Then a question worked from his brain out his
mouth, "You know my name. I don't know how, but you do. What is yours?"
The Uni raised it's head high, "Bustoph, Bustoph Windscape."
"You have a last name?"
"Don't you?"
"You got that from the Uni flock of Windscape?"
Bustoph seemed to hesitate to nod.
"I have no pack. So I have no last name."
Shadad looked down at the snow.
"You are the one," the Uni said looking to the sky. "Shadad you must
travel with me! you must not ask why, not now. When we are done, you'll
see." His crystal blue eyes stared straight into Shadad's and for a moment,
the Uni was invisible to Shadad. As he was to the rest of Neopia. "They
are after you Shadad. The easiest way to find you is if you stay in one
place. We have power, Lupe, and they want it. They will destroy us and
those like us to get it."
"What power, you crazy hoof dragger?" Shadad was getting confused and
irritable.
"Again my friend, something time will tell us both."
"You don't know?!"
"Correction, I'm not sure."
"All right then you winged book of answers. You get me down off this
mountain, and I'll go right along with you. No questions asked."
"In a fight?"
"Whatever tickles your fancy horn boy."
Bustoph stood for a moment. He looked around with fear in his beautiful
eyes. Melted snow dripping off the tree branches in the background. He
listened close, running water. He looked down. The water from the trees
was running into a crack in the ground. Bustoph looked up at Shadad with
a smirk on his face that could make a Grrarl uneasy.
Bustoph jabbed his horn into the crack. At once the ledge parted company
with the mountain and went plummeting down into the stream below. Shadad
was used to snow, but not water. Racing and smashing. It made Shadad feel
helpless. A feeling that was new to him. Flotsam swam around his huge
paws and his mountain ledge. Shadad quickly climbed onto it. Holding on
for dear life. He could only wait. Half and hour later the ledge hit a
newly assembled dam. Two crystal blue eyes and a swirling blue Uni were
standing on it smiling.
"Welcome off the mountain Shadad," Bustoph laughed, "Now hurry up."
