"Wow," she breathed, looking at the shear size of it in amazement.
"Pretty amazing isn't it?" a soft but menacing voice said from the other
side of the arena.
"Who's there?" Silvera said, striking a fighting pose and looking around
her.
"Doesn't matter, you know," the voice said hastily. "And if you still
don't have a clue I suggest you turn around now," it added.
"You can forget that seeing how there is no exit and besides, I'm not
a coward," she replied, feeling the fur on her neck bristle indignantly.
"I don't have to worry seeing as how you're a wimp not to show yourself.
I don't have anything to run from," she added with relish.
"Is that a challenge?" the voice replied hopefully.
"You bet," Silvera said proudly.
"Foolish girl," the voice said, as a ghostly white Lupe evolved from
the shadows of the far side of the arena. He was nearly transparent.
With that, the Lupe jumped forward and slashed at Silvera but she dodged.
This must be Vadismal, she thought, dancing away from another assault.
Vadismal lept forward and this time she had no room to flee. She slashed
through air as Vadismal loped away from her desperate attack to get out
of the corner he had confined her in. She ran out into the center of the
arena where she had plenty of room. Vadismal appeared behind her but fortunately,
the gift of silence was not given to him for he sounded like a herd of
angry elephants parading towards her from behind. She jerked around and
slashed at his face, leaving deep gouge marks there.
"ARGH!" he cried in agony as the stinging struck his face. In pure rage
he slashed down, leaving a deep scare on her right temple. The white pain
hit her like a tornado's harsh winds. Red blinded her vision as a rivulet
of blood streamed down her cheek. She shrunk into a protective ball, waiting
for the pain to subside as she felt Vadismal beat her from outside her
curled position. Finally the pain went down and she carried on her assault,
biting, scratching and kicking viciously. She lashed out savagely as he
tried to tear her ear and half succeeded. She was bleeding heavily from
the still painful scare on her temple. A gash in her side made from the
nearly transparent Lupe sent pain spreading to her curled toes.
She felt the world fading suddenly as Vadismal got her in a tight hold
around her neck with his teeth. She was losing. In a desperate attempt,
she kicked out with her hind legs, catching Vadismal in the gut hard.
She turned around and reared. Standing on her hind legs awkwardly then
gaining momentum as she came crashing down and pushed him to the ground.
She quickly took the advantage to finish him off as he had tried to her,
by grabbing his throat in her merciless jaws. He choked as her teeth sunk
into his neck, so close to the main artery that he could feel it pulsing.
"Please, have mercy," he pleaded, ready to do anything for life.
"Will you give me back the rainbow gem," she asked, tightening her grip
on his neck.
"Yes," he sobbed through choking noises muffled by tears. "I promise
I'll never do it again!" he pleaded pathetically.
"Fine," she said, letting go of his neck.
He got to his feet and pulled a beautiful rainbow colored gem from the
fur on his ruff. He handed it to her and backed off.
"You were foolish to let me go! Of course I will never give up. The rainbow
gem will help me take over and become king of the Lupes some day. I will
never give up!" he said, slinking away into the shadows.
These, of course, were not Silvera's problems. They would soon be Gulius'
and the next generation after his. She felt herself being transported
again but it wasn't from a portal.
She was, once again, in Elveris' cave. Elveris was in front of her, smiling
warmly.
"You did it. Your father would be proud," she said, retrieving the rainbow
gem from Silvera's teeth and returning it to a pedestal. It shone there,
so brightly, in the dim light of the cave.
"I must return home," Silvera said, turning to leave. She saw Elveris
nod out of the corner of her eye then slink away into the darkness of
her cave.
When Silvera got home, her family greeted her warmly. Gulius and Freskan
wanted to know where she had gone for the day but that was only something
she would know. For now, she would be the only one to know that but someday
Gulius would know as well. And then his children and the children after
that…
