The Legend of the Soup Fairy

Times were hard for Rina and her pet, Macy. Her once dark hair was white with worry and her hands were worked to their bone. There wasn't enough left of her shoes or stockings to speak of and her clothes were so patched and worn that no one would believe that they were once royal blue in color. Macy was more than just a sorry sight, she was a shame to the Lupes. Her hair was matted and filthy, but she gritted her teeth bore it with a smiling face. Yes, she understood. Her shop was in a small corner of the Market Place, so small that no one ever bothered to visit. They were the outcasts of society, the ones the ghosts usually picks on, the the ones the daddy grubs try to gobble.

Life was tough, but they were brave and their bravery was repaid. Rina won the Neopian Lottery. Her shop was the first to improve - it was renovated and started selling hundreds of rare and exquisite items. Macy's loyalty was rewarded by expensive toys and delicacies. They shot up in the popularity scale and made friends from all over Neopia. This neopoint-bought happiness didn't last.

Rina soon forgot her Macy for a new pet: Sana. Sana was graceful as a leaping cat, sweet as honey in spring, but she had none of Macy's courage or loyalty. Macy was first thrown at the Neolodge for long hours, but later simply forgotten. Macy was heartbroken. Rina had been everything to her and now... nothing seemed to matter anymore. Other pets had lost masters before, but not like this. Not when they had lived through so much together, not when they had been together for so long... Rina didn't seem to take notice of the constant reminders of starvation in her mailbox and eventually, Macy died. Sana laughed and Rina laughed with her.

That cruel laugh is still remembered by many who had heard it, cold and heartless. It would seem to shatter the listener's heart. Rina only came to regret her actions when all her money was wasted on luxurious gifts and her friends started to desert her. She only came to realize that the only one who had ever really cared for her was Macy. Her laugh rang through her ears again, ripping her broken heart into shreds. Life was cruel to Rina, but she too had been cruel to her Macy. With what little money she had left, Rina left her home and started cooking up enormous caldrons of soup in the market place. She gave it out to starving pets or stray animals. She didn't want any owner to go through what she had watching her pet die of starvation... and laugh. Though so, Rina knew what she can do will never make up for what she had done.
