The Wonderful World of Pickled Olives

by onda_bianca

MYSTERY ISLAND - Have you ever played Tombola and received a nice jar of pickled olives, but didn't know what to do with it? You put it in your safety deposit box, and after several weeks, realised you've accumulated thirty-four jars of olives? Have you ever wondered what in the world you could do with these pickled olives?

If you notice, pickled olives seem to be everywhere in Neopia, PLUS they are ALWAYS being given out by various games and events. Like everyone else, I hid them in my safety deposit box not thinking anything more about them. If you really examine these olives, you'll find they're more than a silly Tombola prize, and if you get creative, you'll find that there are many uses for this item that's so often overlooked.

To truly be able to appreciate pickled olives, you need to know where they come from. The olives are picked from the natives of Mystery Island and considered a real delicacy. It is said that the islanders will consume many of these olives at the Olive Festival. What is the Olive Festival you ask? This is something I'm trying to search for. I've never witnessed this Olive Festival but have spoken with some natives of Mystery Island. After speaking them, I have found that this is a HUGE yearly celebration for the olives of the world! Olive games and dances are held with competitions, the prizes being...you guessed it, OLIVES! Every single Olive item imaginable can be found at the Olive Festival, the Pickled Olives being a delicious favourite. For the people of Mystery Island, it is the largest event of the year.

Unfortunately, the Olive Festival is a private event only for the islanders so general Neopian public never hears of it. In fact, you can't even eat the olives! If you look at the item, you will find that there is no way to feed these olives to your pet (unless it's a Skeith or Grarrl, in which case your pet will taste the packaging and will the taste of the olives). Only the Islanders know how to open the jar, and although many have tried, they have all failed at being able to taste these olives. This is what causes many Neopians to be frustrated with this item and forget about it completely.

You'll see that Pickled Olives have the value of 184 NP, but can be purchased for 1 NP using the shop wizard. When these olives are kept within the island, they are actually worth 184 NP and are of great value. Once the citizens of Neopia got their hands (and paws) on these items, realising they can't easily do anything with them, the value dropped dramatically and it became their goal to get rid of this island delicacy. But are these items really useless? Here are some suggestions on ways to put these olives to good use:

1. Hold your own Olive Festival, and use pickled olives at this festival of yours. Hold your own olive events and enlighten others on the importance of olives! Invite all your Neofriends to participate. Give each of your friends a jar of Pickled Olives as a token of your appreciation. Or, even better yet, send them MULTIPLE jars of Pickled Olives!

2. Go through the chats and send random people a jar of Pickled Olives along with an interesting olive fact. Tell them something wonderful about olives and the reason they should be loved so much. This may sound silly, but something like this would give me a good laugh and a happy thought for the day!

3. Take up an olive collection for yourself. There are several kinds of olive items, although pickled items are by far the easiest to get a hold of. For 1 NP each you could build up quite a collection. Display it in your shop and see just how many pickled olives you could collect. Wouldn't it be cool to look in someone's shop to find hundreds of pickled olives?

Another thing to keep in mind: items in Neopia will raise in price. If you collect hundreds of pickled olives, over time you could become the owner with the most pickled olives around! Perhaps sometime, these olives will stop being picked. After all, the natives must sure get tired of picking those olives, and there are less and less olive trees around. Also, what if something were to happen to Mystery Island? If any of you remember, Maraqua, a world once thriving in Neopia, suddenly disappeared. If this ever happened to Mystery Island, all of its products, including pickled olives, would be gone forever! Collect now so that you'll have a large supply in the future. You just never know when a small investment may add up.

4. Auction your Pickled Olives off. Okay, so you don't want to have an olive party, you don't want to send the friendly Pickled Olives to various people, and you don't wish to collect them...well there is another option for you; auction them off. Start them at 1 NP with the increment of 1 NP for a one-hour time. We all know how much these are worth, but some others may think they are worth more and have been known to bid up to 100-200 NP on one of these items. (These people truly LOVE the Pickled Olives) Often times this is not the case, but you will more than likely get between 5-15 NP for it. This is more than you could sell it for in your shop and it would be sold quicker than if you had them in your shop (one hour as opposed to one day). Why do people pay 5-15 NP for a 1 NP item you ask? Well, the answer is simple. People can be "auction hounds" and would do anything to "win" at an auction. They love to try and get deals, but love it more when their bid wins. This sometimes comes at a little cost for them, but a big benefit for you. Imagine getting 15 times more than you paid for something? It takes a little bit of patience but in the long run it's worth it.

The ideas don't end here. You could think of hundreds of things to do with your Pickled Olives. Now that you have seen where these items came from and how they can be used, I'd encourage you to make good use out of them. Come up with your own ideas and feel free to share them with me. Hopefully, we will get use out of these seemingly "worthless" items and find that Pickled Olives have value too.
