Look Beneath the Surface: Cliffhanger

by ladee_sarah

TERROR MOUNTAIN - When you last played Cliffhanger did you just solve a string of words so that you could get some NP? I think that most people and their Neopets would be answering yes to this question. Hopefully in this article I can get you to rethink the importance behind these cryptic messages - there is meaning behind them and they often give good advice.

Neopets wasn't just creating a game when they made Cliffhanger they were creating an advice machine. Just think about it. How many times has that elusive sentence been about your pets? Many people would just brush this evidence aside: the sentences are about Neopets things, so what. But anyone with an inquisitive mind and a good memory will start to remember the messages like: 'A Buzz will never sting you', 'A Kyrii will get very upset if its hair gets messed up' and 'Do not speak to an Elephante if there is a tree nearby'. Here are some very practical tips and facts about Neopets. Now you know that a Buzz will never sting you, always nice to know if you have a Buzz for a pet, and after a couple of games I'm sure you'll be a better owner.

These mysterious statements also tell you a bit about what's going on in Neopia with puzzles like: 'Carrots are so expensive these days' and 'Neopian inflation is a fact of life'. These statements are all too true even though we all wish they weren't.

As well as the usual philosophical messages that we all know and love there other messages like: 'Better late then never,' 'An iron rod bends when hot,' and 'Do not bathe if there is no water' all of these are rather obvious reflections and they're not really Neopets related which makes for some annoying information that isn't as easy to guess as some of the others.

Then there are the little bits of advice for when you're wandering around the Neopets site. 'Building a NeoHome is a way to build a foundation for your Neopets,' 'All Neopets can find a job at the Employment Agency,' ' The Neopian Hospital will get your pet on the road to recovery,' and 'The Snow Faerie Quest is for those that can brave the cold,' now you know: you should build a NeoHome, where to heal your pet, where to get a job and not to attempt a Snow Faerie Quest unless you can brave the cold.

Cliffhanger also dishes out information and strategies for and about games. 'Bang and smash your way to the top in the Bumper Cars game,' 'Fly around the canyons of Tyrannia shooting the evil Pterodactyls and Grarrls,' and 'If at first you don't succeed play the Ice Caves puzzle again' those are all very good pieces of advice for when you're next playing the games on Neopets.

So you see the Cliffhanger game isn't just for earning Neopoints. It can raise your pet's intelligence and give you a generous slice of advice to help you on your journey through Neopia.
