The Wooden Spoon Society

by chocolate_frog120

Leisel the Kacheek and Gregory the Shoyru were what some might call 'thrill seekers.' They loved to go anywhere scary and really enjoyed terrifying experiences (crazy as that might sound). They had climbed Terror Mountain, explored the devastated Maraquan city, but there was one place they hadn't been: The Haunted Woods. They decided to stay there for one week, their owners had already okayed it.

They lived on Mystery Island, so they hitched a ride with an old fishing Lenny in order to get to the woods. On the way he told them scary stories of when he was younger, but all the way he seemed to dislike them. He warned them about the Esophagor, and the witch, and told them of what happened to the Kacheek and the Quiggle that got lost on the road near the haunted house, and how they were never heard from again. All these things sounded like so much fun, but one thing that he told them about stood out; the mountains behind the scary cave. He seemed to be trying to scare them into not going there, but you know that that just egged them on more.

Finally, when they reached land, the debated excitedly about what to do first. They decided that they should set up camp.

"Wouldn't it be so cool to stay in the Haunted House where the Kacheek and Quiggle got lost?" Leisel asked.

"Hey, I have a better idea, how about we camp out behind the scary cave!" exclaimed Greg.

"OMG!!! What a cool idea!" yelled Leisel, and that was that. Off they went towards the mountains behind the scary cave. After they had walked for almost twenty minutes after the scary cave, Gregory was starting to get tired, you see, Leisel had made him carry all the packs.

"Let's set up camp here," he said, but Leisel wasn't tired.

"See THAT cave up there?" she said "We should at least get up there, so that if it starts to rain or something, we'll have shelter."

"Fine, fine, fine, but YOU have to carry the pack the rest of the way!" he said, relieved when she took the heavy pack off of his back.

So off they went to the uncharted cave that they knew nothing of. Probably not the smartest thing they could have done, but whatever.

Then, all of a sudden, it started to rain. The pair ran all the way up the hill, slipping and sliding in the mud, and into the cave. Shivering, Gregory lit a match, and WOW! The cave was bigger then they had imagined! There were stalactites and stalagmites, and many chambers! They decided to go up to one of the top chambers, just in case there a robber or a kidnapper came in during the night, besides, they wanted to sleep with the bats.

After rolling out their sleeping bags, and talking for a while, they dozed off. Late at night, they were awakened by a arguing voices.

"Man, it's 3:00 in the morning! Who is up, I mean gosh!" said Leisel, looking at her watch.

"You go down and check," said Gregory

"Um, no, you!" said Leisel.

"Um no, YOU! YOU were the one that said we should go here in the first place!" said Gregory.

"You know what, fine!" said Leisel, "we'll both go!" So they flew down to the floor of the cave, and went to see who was talking. Walking in the shadows, they came across a group of hooded figures. They hid behind a giant stalagmite, and watched as one by one, the figures unmasked themselves.

There were Lennys, Tonus, and Krawks! One of the Lennys was the old fishing guru that had warned them not to come this way. Then finally, a Krawk started to speak.

"My friends, I think you know why I have asked you here today. All of us have held the Wooden Spoon Award, and that is the worst 'honour' that could be bestowed upon a species! It means, quite simply that no one likes us enough to adopt us! I think that by now, we should all be mad that there even IS a wooden spoon award.

"Neopets puts restrictions on us, so that we cannot be created, but do any of you REALLY feel that special? I know I don't! That is why we are here today, to overthrow the empire of Neopets! What do you say, friends?" Then, there was a lot of chanting, and yelling and screaming, and overall confusion. In this confusion, a yellow Tonu discovered the children.

"Well, well, well, look what we have here!" he said. Then he whistled, and everything stopped as Leisel and Gregory were held up before the crowd.

"WHAT!!! HOW DID THEY GET IN HERE?"

"Why cant you stupid little Neopets just stay away when someone tells you too!!!!! You are sooo daft, the owner people only look at your cuteness and adopt you, but nooooo they cant look beyond that! WHAT IS THIS! HASN'T ANYONE EVER HEARD OF LOOKING BELOW THE SKIN!!!" said the old fishing Lenny.

"WE'RE NOT STUPID!" shouted Leisel. "We were only curious! Let us go or our owners will hunt you down!"

"Oh, you are stupid little parasites now aren't you! Your owners have NO idea where you are now do they! WHAT NOW! So, I guess you two are just gonna have to pass an eternity in this DEEP DARK cave, while we are out snatching up all the stupid little Neopets owners who never thought to adopt us!"

"Wwwee... weee arree really sorry that no one adopted you, but... but... how can you be here if you have no owner?" Gregory ventured

"Oh, I'll tell you! You see, there are two ways that we all" He said gesturing around the room "got to be here. They are both really terrifying and I hope that you get nightmares. One is this: Neglectful owners. You know, those people that just leave Neopets, and forget about their pets! They don't come back, or maybe they get a new account, and start over. So we run away because we are so hungry! We have no place to go, so we try to find others like us." At this, a tear came to his eye. "But, if we don't, the hunger drives us all mad, and we turn into Pant Devils. Terrorising the people that never helped us, the owners that never cared!

"And the second way is even worse. Our owners no longer want us, so they send us to the pound. There, the old Techo hits us, and doesn't feed us. We never get a glimpse of air! So, after months and years of waiting and hoping for a new owner to love us, we either die, or escape. The ones who left Neopia are probably the lucky ones, because they don't have to live like this!"

He was in full fledged tears now. "And even the ones who have owners to love them can never be happy, because wherever they go, they are surrounded by cute, happy little pets! We need more of our kind to be happy! WHY? WHY? WHY!???"

Then, the old Lenny started crying more. And more, and more, and so did most of the other animals in the cave. Leisel even started to cry, but Gregory kept his wits around him.

"Now's our chance to RUN!" said Gregory, and Leisel did. The pair, running out of the cave wasn't even noticed by the crying Lennys, Krawks, and Tonus.

They ran all the way to the shore, and hitched a ride on a tour boat to go home. When they got home, they panted, and after they had caught their breath, they told their owners the whole story. The next day, Leisel's owner adopted a Lenny, and Gregory's created a Krawk, and a Tonu. All of their friends were so impressed by the Neopets intelligence, that pretty soon, everyone wanted one of each! So, after weeks and weeks of planning, the Lennys, Krawks and Tonus decided to give up, because they each had more important things to do... in their new homes.
