Once again, Wolfglare the Lupe looked down into the small town of Happy Valley
from his special peak on Terror Mountain. Every single night, as Wolfglare went
to the very edge of the peak just before howling at the brilliantly bright moon
(well, it was bright from the mountain, anyway), he would look behind him and
see soft paw prints in the snow. This completely fascinated him, just like the
way that tiny snowflakes turned to little water droplets against his warm fur
did.
Wolfglare loved his special peak. It was his favourite spot in the entire
world. But tonight, he was dreading the thought of howling. As he stood on his
peak, looking up at the dark blue sky and the bright stars he felt absolutely
miserable, unlike on other nights. Tonight, well... he cringed as he looked
down at Happy Valley. He knew what was down there.
A bunch of silly giggling Usuls!
Wolfglare shook his head as he remembered the events that had happened during
the day. He had been in the Happy Valley marketplace, and as he was buying his
favourite food in the entire world, slushies (if you count them as a food),
he noticed a HUGE group of Usuls, staring at him and giggling. Wolfglare coughed
into his slushie.
He wasn't sure what was going on, but this had never happened to him before.
The Usuls kept on staring and giggling as Wolfglare watched them out of the
corner of his eye. They must have been tourists, because Wolfglare had never
seen them before. Finally, he couldn't take their giggling anymore. He dropped
his slushie into the freshly fallen snow and turned around to face the Usuls.
The Usuls' giggling turned into laughter. Wolfglare felt himself getting angrier
and angrier. How dare these Usuls laugh at him! Did they know who he was?!?
"Hello!" Wolfglare shouted, and it made the Usuls laugh even more. Wolfglare
didn't think he could get any angrier, but he did. "What is your problem?!?"
he shouted again. He felt like screaming at them, but he couldn't make himself
do it.
One green Usul spoke up. "You're cute!" The Usuls broke out into mad giggles,
again.
Wolfglare felt half angry and half... embarrassed. Nobody had ever called
him cute before, nobody! And nobody had any right to! "You... you... think I'm
cute?" Wolfglare said. "I'll have you know... no one calls me cute!"
"Fine then, you're masculine!" a red Usul screeched, and giggles came out
of her throat and into the air. The Usuls giggled even harder. Wolfglare had
never heard anyone laugh so hard in his life, but that wasn't the worst of it.
Masculine was even worse then cute. Wolfglare looked around him, to make sure
no one was seeing this. But people were seeing it! They were attracted by the
mad Usuls' insane giggles, and had to see what was going on. Wolfglare had never
been so humiliated.
"We heard you howl!" shouted every single Usul at the same time. By now, they
were laughing so hard that tears were streaming down their cheeks.
Wolfglare couldn't take this anymore. As soon as he was out of that stupid
marketplace, he ran towards the mountain. But he couldn't go up; during daytime,
he would be visible from any spot. Wolfglare didn't know where to go.
Wolfglare buried himself in a pile of snow with his nose sticking out, so
he could breathe. His blue fur protected him from the cold. Wolfglare lay there
for a long time. Why do those Usuls think I'm... Wolfglare couldn't even
think the word masculine. I'm no different from any other Lupe!
As soon as the sky began to get dark, he headed for his peak.
And now he was there, looking down at the dreaded Happy Valley, knowing that
those girlie Usuls would have their windows open, waiting for Wolfglare to howl.
They would probably break out into those pathetic giggles as soon as they heard
the start of it. Wolfglare dreaded thinking of this, but he couldn't help himself.
He wanted so badly not to howl.
I'll do what I want! he thought to himself. Those Usuls can't humiliate
me! So, taking in a huge breath, Wolfglare let out a magnificent howl. It
was stronger then he had ever howled before.
Whenever Wolfglare howled, he felt calm, peaceful, and that the world had
no problems. He felt as if he were free, and up there... in the sky...
But as soon as Wolfglare stopped, the terrible feeling crept through him...
worse than ever. It tingled his spine and he shivered. He realised that the
better he howled, the worse the Usuls would humiliate him.
"I can't go back down there," Wolglare said aloud. "I'll never go back again!"
He let out another howl. Then he laid down on the rock and went to sleep.
His heavy eyelids opened to the brightness of a new day... and to...
An Usul's smiling face!
Wolfglare was on his paws quicker than you could say "Usul". He looked around
him, but there was only one Usul. He was sort of relieved, but one Usul could
still humiliate him.
Thank goodness that no one else is up here, he thought to himself.
At least no one would see this happening, whatever was going to happen.
Wolfglare's eyes narrowed at the Usul, but it kept smiling. How could it be
so perky, when everything else seemed grumpy and gloomy? Wolfglare still didn't
smile.
"Hi!" screamed the Usul. It was blue and silly looking. "My name is Lulu and
I'm an Usul!"
"I know what you are," growled Wolfglare. He wanted the Usul to cry. He knew
it was mean, but he wanted revenge. In Happy Valley, everyone had respected
him as if he were some sort of hero. But now...
The Usul kept on smiling. "Hi!" she said again.
The smile made Wolfglare feel sick. He was tired, and he wanted more sleep.
He wanted to be left alone! But how could he make this Usul go away? Wolfglare
couldn't think properly, so he just said, "Go away."
The Usul smiled. Unbelievable! Wolfglare thought angrily. I'm not
leaving this peak, not to go down to Happy Valley.
The Usul didn't move an inch, except for her tiny hand which kept moving back
in forth as a friendly wave hello.
Wolfglare turned around and headed up the mountain. The paths were steep,
but Wolfglare's paws were built for climbing.
Behind him, the Usul had stopped smiling. "Wait!" she shouted. "Wait! Wait!
Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait!" She sounded like a broken record. When Wolfglare didn't
wait, she grabbed on to his tail. He broke free of her tiny grip.
She can't follow me, he thought. She's not built for climbing.
But the Usul tried to follow. "Stop!" she shouted. "Stop! Stop! Stop! Stop!
Stop! Stop!" She tried to press her little feet into the snow above her, but
she couldn't. She wobbled a little, leaned forward, and kept on following Wolfglare.
"Stop!"
NO! Wolfglare thought, but he didn't say anything. He heard a tiny
little "Eeeek!" behind him, and turned around just in time to see the little
Usul tumbling down the mountain....
