Adult Neopians by sagerainwillow | |
There is a growing population of adults playing NeoPets. In fact, there are
thousands of gamers over the age of eighteen! Why do adults play a children’s
game, you ask? For all the same reasons kids do, of course! In the simplest
definition: It’s fun. As adults, most of our lives are boring and mundane. We
work, come home, take care of children, and do all the responsible adults things.
Neopia is a form of escapism for us. In this make-believe world, we can become
millionaires, own shops, homes, and find a little magic that we have somehow
lost along the way in our everyday lives.
Some adults started playing through their children. Many parents won’t let
their children go on the computer unsupervised. So, they came to Neopia with
their kids, saw how fun it is, and started playing too! This is kind of what
happened to me. I began playing NeoPets because I love all kinds of multi-player,
RPGs. My mother kept looking over my shoulder asking why in the world I was
playing a children’s game!
After a month of this badgering, I sat her down and showed her a few things.
Well, she created an account and adopted a Scorchio. My mother is now just as
hooked on NeoPets as I am!
Some adults, when they first create their account, actually change their age
because they feel silly being so much older. I cannot tell you how many adults
I have talked to say how they feel ashamed to play in a world of fantasy. I
have concluded that everyone, regardless of his or her age, needs some kind
of escape from the mundane world. Some adults go fly-fishing, play golf, and
others silently creep to Neopia while at work and on the weekends.
We never really grow out of having fun. Problems, stress, and tension plague
us all. We need a good, safe outlet to express ourselves and unwind after a
hard day. Neopia gives us that outlet. To forget that we are adults with responsibilities,
and perhaps for a little while, we can feel like kids again! |
