The Poor, Unwanted Chia

by suebrenna

NOTE: This story is about my pet, Apple_Dumpling_Chia. He really was left in the pound, until I adopted him. The names are made up, except for his name. And the girl that adopted him from the pound, was really me ;)

Apple was a peaceful pet; he didn't ask for much. But then one day, his owner did indeed, left him in the pound.

Kim looked at her watch; ten minutes have already passed. She then turned to the egg in front of her; there was no sign of hatching yet. Just then, the egg suddenly jerked. There was a gentle crack, and out popped a head.

"Ello, 'ow are you?" now a little red Chia was standing in the place of the egg.

"Fine," Kim answered without even looking at it. She then took the little Chia, and went to a nearby desk.

"Hello, how may I help you?" a lady at the desk asked.

"My NeoPet has hatched. I want the 50 NP I'm supposed to get when a NeoPet hatches," Kim told the woman.

"Oh, yes. Here you go," the lady gave her a bag full of NP. Kim counted the money, and left.

They walked past Kiko Lake, and along the Chia Avenue, until they reached a small house at the end of the road. Kim stopped, and got out her keys.

She opened the door, and called, "Hey guys, I brought you a new brother. Come and see!" Just as she said that, three NeoPets appeared from the house. There was a Kyrii, a Techo, and an Eyrie; they were all huge. They looked at the small, poor Chia, and frowned.

"But you said you were going to get us a Lupe, not an ugly red Chia!" the Eyrie cried.

"Yeah, mum. He's so ugly! We don't want him here!" the Kyrii added.

"I hate Chias!!" said the Techo.

"Okay, you're right. I don't know what I was thinking. I'll get him to the pound," Kim said to them.

Since Apple was just a baby NeoPet, he didn't know what a pound was. "What's a pound, mommy?" he asked.

But all Kim said was, "Be quiet. You'll see soon!" She grabbed the Chia by his neck and took him with her.

They got inside a car and drove away. Apple looked outside a window. Trees, trees, and more trees was all he could see. Occasionally, he could see one or too houses, but that was it. They must have drove for a long time, because when they finally got there, the sun was just setting. The little Chia didn't know at the moment that he wouldn't see the setting sun for a very long time.

The car finally came to a halt. Kim and Apple came out. There was an old building standing in front of them. When they got inside, Apple saw a red Uni.

"Are you adopting," the Uni smiled, "or leaving your pet in the pound?"

"I'm certainly leaving this rascal in the pound," Kim turned towards Apple.

"Then it's that way," the Uni stopped smiling, and pointed to a scary-looking Techo.

So Kim walked in the direction of the Techo.

"Yes?" the Techo hissed.

"I want to leave him," Kim showed Apple.

"Of course," and with that, the Techo took Apple away.

He threw him into a cage, and left him there.

***

The next day, Apple woke up with a bad memory of the previous day. He remembered what has happened. Ugly, they called him. He thought for a moment. Is it my fault they didn't love me? he asked himself. But the only answer that came to him was his empty stomach growling. He then remembered another thing; he hasn't eaten anything yet. So he ate the gross food that was laying in a food bowl on the floor. He spent most of his day just looking around at other NeoPets in the pound; they were all crying. But somehow, he didn't cry. He had a hope that somebody's going to adopt him soon, and he's going to live in a nice home, have a loving family, and a great life.

"Pssssssst," somebody called Apple. He turned and looked, and he saw a green Aisha, about his age, in a cage next to his.

"Hi, I'm Max. What's your name?" he asked.

"I'm Apple_Dumpling_Chia, but you can call me Apple," Apple answered.

"So how long have you been here?" the Aisha asked.

"One week."

"I've been here three weeks."

Max and Apple soon became friends. They talked to each other every day.

***

At about 10 pm every day, people came to look for NeoPets to adopt. They inspected every pet carefully, looking at its stats, species, gender, and name. Every time somebody came and looked at Apple, a hope came to him. But then it faded, when that person went away.

Two months have passed already. Nobody adopted the poor Chia. He has lost all his hope in having a nice life. Instead, he would be here forever, or maybe even, be put to sleep. One thing was sure; there wasn't any hope for him anymore. His friend, Max, has been adopted. Now Apple had no one to talk to.

Then one day, a girl came into the pound. She had brown hair and blue eyes. She looked at each one of the pets. She passed a fire Lupe, a yellow Kau, a purple Poogle... And then she stopped near Apple's cage. Apple didn't even turn around - he knew she wasn't going to adopt an ugly red Chia like him. Or was she?

She called the old Techo and asked him to open the cage. She came in, and looked at poor Apple. He was very sad. He had tears in his eyes. He didn't even care to look at the girl. Then, the girl whispered something to the Techo. The Techo nodded, and walked away.

"Hello there little Chia," the girl said. "How long have you been here?"

"About two and a half months," Apple told her sadly.

"Well, then that's it. You can't be here any longer!"

"Wh-what do you mean?"

"You can't be here any longer!" the girl repeated.

"Does that mean--" Apple was now thinking about the worst--being put to sleep.

"Oh no, silly," the girl gave a gentle laugh. "I mean something else. You're going with me!"

Apple couldn't believe his ears. He was going to be adopted! He was so happy! He turned around and looked at the girl. Then he stood up, ran to her, and hugged her. Tears were in his eyes. But they were tears of happiness. For he knew that his dreams- having a nice home, a loving family, and a great life, were finally going to come true! And most of all, he would have a wonderful owner, an owner that would love him no matter what!
