AngeBlue trotted dejectedly home. I can't keep lying like this, she
told herself, one day they're gunna find out. And then it will all be over.
Slamming the door behind her, she made her way upstairs and to her room before
her mother could reel her back with questions about her day. Today was not a
very good day. She didn't want to recall it.
She collapsed in her bed and suppressed her tears. Stop it! she told
herself, It's not a big deal. No really cares if I can fly. But she knew
it was just the opposite.
AngeBlu was an exceptionally beautiful blue Uni. Her mane was silky, her blue
fur radiant in the sun, and her eyes held a friendly twinkle. But she was almost
seven. And everyone knew that Unis should be flying by seven.
AngeBlue fluttered her wings. They were completely normal. So why can't she
fly? Everyone she knew was already flying or at least hovering. She could do
neither.
Suddenly angry with herself, she stood and leapt off the bed, flapping her
wings hard and fast. She seemed to be flying... until she landed face first
on the floor.
Almost instantly her mother dashed into the room and found her youngest NeoPet
struggling to get off the floor. "Blu! What happened?"
"N-nothing," she said, dazed.
Her look of concern melted into a gentle smile as she helped AngeBlu (or Blu
as she was called) onto her feet.
"Trying to fly again?"
No answer.
"Blu, I've told you a thousand times, your wings aren't ready yet. They're
not strong enough."
"But everyone else's are!"
"You're not everybody else." Blu cringed at the familiar saying.
Her mother sighed and got up. "I have to finish dinner and you have to start
your homework. It better be done by dinner," she said, her voice trailing away
as she descended down the stairs.
Blu trotted excitedly into gym class the next day. Gym was always her favourite
class. It was nice to get a break from her studies.
Her teacher, a dry looking human named Mr. Sims, came in and took attendence.
After he was finished, he put down his clipboard and addressed the class:
"Today is going to be a little different. You're going to be broken up by species
and practice your special skill. All my Unis please come with me. The rest of
you go with your instructor."
AngeBlu's heart skipped a beat. Practice your special skill? But the Uni's
special skill is flying!
Mr. Sims led the group of about five or so Unis into the pool room. He explained
that they were going to practice off the diving boards, that way if the fall
its into water not land.
Marnie, a Faerie Uni, went first. She, of course, flew effortlessly across
the pool. As each Uni went and flew, Blu became more and more nervous. What
if she didn't fly? She would be the laughing stock of the whole class!
Before she knew it, it was her turn. She slowly climbed the ladder, taking
her time...
"Hurry please, we don't have all day," Mr. Sims said.
She reached the top. She slowly inched to the edge, and looked down. Then she
looked at her classmates, who were beginning to get resteless.
"Come on, Blu!" someone yelled.
She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and leapt out into the open air. She
flapped her wings hard. But, as always, she felt herself fall, and landed with
a splash.
She came up gasping and sputtering and heard laughter. Almost everyone was
doubled over, rolling around on the floor, laughing so hard there were tears
streaming down their face.
They were still laughing when the bell rang. AngeBlu gathered her stuff and
slowly walked out the door.
"Wait! AngeBlu! Wait please!" Mr. Sims called.
She turned, "Yea?"
"I noticed you were having some trouble on the diving board. Are you okay?"
"I guess..."
"Have you ever flown before, Blu?" Mr. Sims asked.
She hesitated. Then, "No, sir."
He thought for a moment. "Come with me." He started off toward the pool and
started to climb the ladder to the high dive. AngeBlu stopped in her tracks.
He looked down and beckoned to her. "Come on!" Not wanting to disobey a teacher,
she obediently followed. On the high dive, she inched toward the edge and looked
down. She didn't realise Mr. Sims was behind her.
All of a sudden, she felt his hands on her back. Before she knew what was happening,
he pushed, and she felt herself fall. She screamed in surprise, shut her eyes,
and braced for the impact. It was taking a long time. Opening her eyes, she
realised she was hovering just inches away from the water. I'm flying!!
she thought.
She looked up at Mr. Sims. He was smiling.
"I'm flying!!" she yelled.
"I knew you could do it," he called back.
She sailed around the room, and landed gracefully next to the pool. Gathering
her things, she yelled to him, "Thanks!" and flew home. She couldn't wait to
see the look on her mother's face.
