Welcome to my files... Thief is a true story about my brother, Viper... I
am Einstein, your humble host and keeper of this tale... I recall every event
perfectly and I can easily assure you that my file is 100 % accurate... Be warned
though, you are about to be witness to events which were not intended to be
discovered by any earthling such as yourself. This tale must never leave Neopia
and must rest in secret in File #2495a of my laptop for evermore... It begins...
Population: Not a heck of a lot unless you count all of the Cocos.
It's home to tropical fruits and Tiki-Tack men, the Training School and Trading
Post. Every summer, tourists from all over Neopia flock to its sunny beaches
expecting nothing more than a great holiday. They never expect anything out
of the ordinary to happen, but once in a while, strange things do occur...
About half a mile away was a jungle, and at
the very edge of that jungle was a mountain. Mount Parasar, it was called. At
the base of Mount Parasar there was no shore, for it connected directly to the
ocean. It was perilous to any sailor, especially with waves like this, and was
often compared to the Bermuda Triangle by human tourists-not because it was
supposedly haunted or anything like that, but because the side of the mountain
was so razor-sharp that any boat that hit it was shredded to toothpicks.
The giant waves splashed against the mountain's
jagged side, causing water to spray in all directions. A few waves away, something
could be spotted floating in the water. At first glance one might say it was
a piece of driftwood or a strand of seaweed, but at a closer look they would
see that it was something far more disturbing. It was a single grey Lupe paw.
A few seconds later, it disappeared among the waves. Then, with a sickening
crack!, the Lupe was thrown out of the water and into the side of Mount
Parasar. It probably didn't matter if anything was broken since the Lupe had
most probably drowned long before. After a few minutes, the Lupe's entire body
reappeared above the water.
It was a male mutant Lupe. It was limp and did
not appear to be breathing yet it continued to float on the water's surface.
It seemed that its shoulder had been broken when it'd hit the mountain. The
Lupe was covered with all the normal Lupe markings such as the forehead stripes,
but it also had a wide variety of scars. The most noticeable one ran down his
left forearm. It was a long, squiggly line in the form of a snake. Suddenly,
a few more titanic waves splashed against the mountain. When the spray had cleared,
the Lupe's body was nowhere to be seen...
The Lupe began to gag and cough out a fountain
of water. As he coughed, he clutched his chest with his forepaws. After a few
minutes, the gagging subsided and the mutant rolled over, onto his stomach.
He laid his head down on his scarred arm, breathing heavily. A few seconds later,
he stopped panting, opened his eyes, and looked around. Both of his eyes were
blue, but one of them was a lot lighter than the other eye, nearly white. A
long grey scar ran across that eye and continued to run down his muzzle.
As the Lupe looked around the crowed, he found
that he could not see through the scarred eye. It was blind.
"Where am I?" asked the mutant nervously, his
heart pounding in his chest like a drum. The spectators did little more than
watch, as they were all too stunned to speak. As the Lupe scanned the crowd,
he caught his breath. Another, even more important question, had popped into
his head. Breathing shakily, wide-eyed, he asked it to himself aloud. "Who am
I?"
The pupil in the Lupe's non-blind eye searched
the crowd fearfully as if searching for the answer to his question. Beads of
sweat rolled down his face, making the fur even more drenched than before.
All of a sudden the air was filled with the
wailing of sirens. Someone had no doubt called 9-1-1. An ambulance and a Neopian
police cruiser pulled onto the beach, causing the crowd to back away, leaving
a path for the emergency crew. Only the brown-haired girl remained within several
feet from the Lupe.
The Lupe leaned onto his side, unaware of his
broken shoulder. A jolt of pain shot through his body as if he had been struck
by lightning. Then, once again, he began to cough, causing him to suffer even
more. Once the coughing had stopped, he took a couple deep breaths before blacking
out on the steaming sand.
Just as the Lupe's head hit the ground, two
Cocos carrying a stretcher came out the back of the ambulance. At the same time,
a police Kougra got out of the cruiser. The letters MIPD were written on the
front of the cop's uniform. They stood for 'Mystery Island Police Department'.
"What happened here?"
* * *
Before long, every single square inch of the Mystery Island police station
was filled with the tourists from the beach, waiting to be questioned by the
police. They were all apparently witnesses to no apparent crime. So far, none
of the tourists' accounts had included any remotely useful information for the
case, however, the police still seemed to think that foul play was indeed involved.
No one could really be sure of what happened though because every single one
of the tourists had heard the Lupe say: "Who am I?" It seemed that he had some
form of amnesia, so even he wouldn't know what happened. For all the police,
or anybody for that matter, knew, the Lupe might've been really clumsy and slipped
off the edge of a dock. After finally concluding that no investigation was needed
at the moment, the police were still left with another question. Who would keep
the Lupe? They couldn't just dump him at the pound. The officer in charge of
the interrogation laughed as he imagined the scenario...
"Oh wow! I've always wanted a mutant Lupe! Who
would want to disown it?" the owner would ask.
"We actually don't know," the 'Adopt-a-pet'
Uni would respond.
"Well, what's his name?"
"We don't know that either."...
How confusing would that be? There was no way
that that was going to happen. To police were going to have to find one of the
tourists that could take him in. Unfortunately, that was a lot easier said than
done. Most of them either already had four Neopets, weren't looking for another
pet, or they just didn't want to get involved with a pet with amnesia. The police
were about to give up when the brown-haired girl stepped in.
"I'll keep him."
* * *
Some twenty minutes later, the brown-haired girl sat next to the hospital
bed where the unconscious Lupe lay. There was a gold metal plate of some sort
strapped to his broken shoulder.
Still thinking of a name for the poor amnesiac
Lupe, his new owner began stroking his fur. Without warning, a single word spoke
into her mind. Viper.
Hmm... thought the girl. That's the
perfect name for you! I wonder where I got that name from. In truth, Viper
was the perfect name for the mutant considering the scar on him arm looked just
like one.
Suddenly, the girl found it was no longer her
brushing the fur, but the fur was brushing against her! Viper was stirring.
As he lifted his head, the girl withdrew her hand.
Puzzled, he looked at her. "D-do I know you?
Do you know me?" She shook her head. "Then who are you?"
"I'm your new owner. My name's RavynnWolfe,
but you can call me Raven. Uh..." Raven paused, thinking of a way to tell Viper
about, well... everything, without sounding too awkward of course. "Um... since
you apparently have no idea what your name is, I've decided to call you Viper.
Err... just in case you don't know exactly what happened to you-which you most
probably don't-you drifted onto a beach on Mystery Island and we found you and
then the police appointed me your owner."
"Viper... I like it. It suits me, whoever I
am." He paused a second. "Don't the police have records of every Neopet in Neopia?"
"Err... They're supposed to but, well, they
looked you up, and well... there were no records of you. Like you never existed,
you know, just sort of dropped out of the sky."
Viper cocked his head. "That can't be right."
He would have loved to learn more about his real identity, but he was too excited
about his new one. It made him feel special somehow, to have two identities.
As for Raven, she was being reminded of some movies and shows that she'd seen,
such as John Doe and The Bourne Identity. Maybe Viper had something
interesting like that happen to him. Maybe he was a spy or something. Or maybe...
"What's the square root of three million, one
thousand and sixty three?" asked Raven suddenly, referring to the main character
of John Doe who gets a sudden knowledge of absolutely everything after
being in an accident and getting amnesia.
"What?"
"Guess not..."
Still looking a bit confused, Viper asked, "Uh...
Raven?"
"Hmm?"
"When do we get to get out of here?"
To be continued...
