Hunt For the Gormball

Year 5, May 7

Dear Journal, This past week has been most horrid indeed. I'll tell you the truth... the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

It all started on a perfectly sunny day. My brother, Nastyhobbitses, was playing Gormball with me. I, being a Gelert, was naturally very athletic, and so I won most of the rounds we played. At the time, Nastyhobbitses (the lab ray pet of the family) was an Elephante, and couldn't grab hold of the ball very well, and would often drop it to the ground, causing him to lose. In short, he should've given up while he was still ahead.

After we had been playing for an hour, I went in to get a can of Neocola, leaving my brother alone with the ball to get the much needed practice. Not a good idea. When I got back outside, the rascal was nowhere to be seen. "Nastyhobbitses, where ARE you?" I yelled, running around searching frantically through the yard.

Finally, I found him, dipping his legs in the river behind our NeoHome. "Where's the Gormball?" I asked.

"It's in the... river. It slipped out of my hands. I couldn't help it," he replied, looking at his feet.

"We have to find it. That cost me over 1000 Neopoints, two month's allowance!" I replied, diving into the river, and letting it carry me downstream.

Nastyhobbitses sighed and jumped in after me; it was his job to take care of me. We both started floating downstream at a rapid pace. I saw the ball floating a few yards ahead of me. No matter how hard my brother and I tried, we just couldn't grab hold of the Gormball.

Now, about a mile downstream from our NeoHome, there's a waterfall. A huge one, that seems to plunge down for thousands of feet. Waterfalls, as you know, mean trouble... big trouble.

After about ten minutes of floating, and reaching for my ball, we were heading towards that waterfall without knowing it. "Uh, Baby_Eyes, (my real name was Innocent_Baby_Eyes, but everybody calls me Baby_Eyes for short) I think the current is getting stronger.

I didn't reply, because I had grabbed the ball. "Got it!" I shouted happily as I held it up high above my head. Suddenly, I also, could feel the current. "Uh, oh." I said as we approached the white waters.

"First chance you get, grab onto something. A rock, branch, or better yet, try and make your way to the bank," instructed my older brother.

I only nodded dumbly, and held the ball tight, as if it would help me stay afloat. We were now in the white waters, being tossed about, and almost being smashed against the sharp rocks. The first chance I got, I grabbed a slippery rock, and climbed onto it. My brother tried desperately to get a grip on the slick rock, but failed. I watched him in horror as he floated downstream, now only under the mercy of the current.

I felt quite helpless as I saw him approaching the falls. "Watch out!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. He couldn't hear me above the roar of the current though, and it probably wouldn't have helped even if he had heard me.

I was in a daze. I tried to bring myself into reality as I watched my only brother tumble down the falls. "Noooo!" I cried, tears forming in my wide-open eyes. I hugged the Gormball tightly, and curled into a small heap on the rock, and cried myself to sleep, which is very hard, seeing as rocks are hard to fall sleep on, especially when you could tumble off anytime into raging currents.

When I woke, still lying on the rock, the sun was setting. I rubbed my eyes, trying to recall what had just happened. Then I remembered... My lower lip started to tremble, but I quickly stopped it. I knew I wasn't going to ever get off of this rock if I didn't stop being a baby. (I want to be painted baby someday, but that has nothing to do with this story. Maybe another time, okay?)

I looked all around me for someway get off of the small rock. I saw a log floating by, so I jumped onto it. I don't know what I was thinking when I did that, because the log was heading right towards the waterfall. In spite of my stupidity, I bounded across the log to the other side, and from there, leaped to the bank. I had made it safely to land.

I sighed. Now was the mile-long journey upriver and back home. My owner would be so worried about me. And what would I tell her about Nastyhobbitses? More tears welled up at the thought.

I started walking blindly back towards home. It would take a while, because at the moment, I was walking at a snail's pace. You know how long it takes a snail to travel a mile? I don't either, but I'd assume a few weeks. Okay, so maybe I wasn't going quite as slow as a snail, but it sure felt like it to me.

Seeing a tree, I stopped to rest, even though I'd only taken about 10 steps. I slumped down at the tree trunk, and watched a mouse skitter by. I thought to myself how scared my Elephante brother would be if he saw the mouse. He'd run off screaming, and try to climb a tree, although he never could seem to get past the first branch.

I almost laughed in spite of myself. Instead of laughing though, I let out an ear-splitting Gelert scream. I was sure I'd just seen an Elephante in the tree branches above me.

I took a second glance, and sure enough, there was an Elephante in the tree. "Nastyhobbitses?" I asked, with my eyebrows raised.

"Baby_Eyes?" replied the Elephante, sliding down the tree, and landing with an "oof" on the ground beside me. I hugged my brother with all my strength, and he hugged me back.

"I thought you were..." I started.

"I know," comforted Nastyhobbitses. "I thought I was too."

I looked up at him eagerly, expecting a story. He started, "Well, as I started to fall off the edge of the waterfall, I saw a branch. It looked pretty flimsy, but I grabbed it anyway. Surprisingly enough, it held my weight, and I caught my breath. I saw a mouse resting on the branch, and it scared the sense out of me me so much that I scrambled up the branch and onto the shore, and ran as fast as I could to the nearest tree, which happened to be this one, and climbed it as fast as I could.

I laughed and stood up. "We'd better be getting home. Mom will be so worried. But first, I want to see that mouse you saw."

He shuddered, obviously not wanting to see it again. I sighed and ran over to where he had been hanging, and picked off the 'mouse'. I flung it at my brother, and he cowered back and quickly threw it back at me.

I held up the 'mouse' for him to see. "This is no mouse. This is mom's rag for cleaning up. You got scared of a piece of cloth!" I laughed, hugging my sides.

"Oh brother, I was just kidding you know," said Nastyhobbitses, trying to cover up his mistake. He started walking home, so I followed, still chuckling to myself.

When we got to our yard, mom was waiting nervously on the porch. When she saw us, she gasped. "Where have you two BEEN all day?" she asked. She tried scolding us, but ended up hugging us instead. She straightened herself back up, hands on hips, waiting for an explanation.

"We were just..." Nastyhobbitses started, but broke out in giggles instead.

I continued for him, "We were just looking for my Gormball, that's all."

My owner looked disapprovingly at us. "Next time ask me first, okay?" She turned to my brother, "And as for you..." Nastyhobbitses cowered. "It's time for a visit to the lab ray. We're already half an hour late." He hated the lab ray, but had to go anyway. Mom didn't care a bit about what we had just been through.

Things never change around here, no matter what we do. My brother's fate will be a visit to the ray every day, and mine... well, I'm doomed to be a slave to this journal, and write to it every day. It's not a punishment, but I felt that I should take up writing. Nobody will be reading my journal but me anyway, so I guess I can tell you whatever I want.

Well, I'm being summoned for dinner... probably omelette again. I'll write again soon, when I have another adventure...

Luv ya, (what am I saying... you're a journal),

Your master, (I've always wanted to say that)

     Innocent_Baby_Eyes

P.S. I'll write real soon, okay?

Revising--Yuck, Or Helpful?
Some people rely only on 'inspiration' to carry them through the article. Now that's good, but writing something without revising at all would take a genius.
