Neopedia : Venuquin the Guide

"We're never going to get back to Mystery Island if you keep going this slow!" shouted the Kougra. "You'd think a Skeith would be able to row a bit faster than that!"

"Oh, hush up, Kino," retorted the Skeith, "I'm rowing as fast as I can!"

Curiousity would definitely be the result for anyone who had just discovered what was happening on a small rowboat far off the coast of Mystery Island. Kino and Skib, two island natives sat in the boat, arguing about how slow the other was and how long it would take them to get back to shore.

"Look, just maneuver the rudder," ordered Kino, grabbing the two oars and rowing with hard, firm strokes, "And follow the compass south."

"The... compass?" asked the Skeith, looking around.

"The compass!" the impatient Kougra shouted, picking up the compass next to him and chucking it at the large Skeith. Instinct, though, caused Skib to duck (something was flying directly towards his head, you know), and the compass flew straight into the dark blue water.

"The compass!" shouted the two simultaneously, seeing as the only words they had spoken in the last few moments had been 'the compass.' They both ran over to one side of the rowboat and watched the compass sink beneath the water.

"Go get it!" yelled Kino, pushing Skib towards the edge of the boat.

"Why me?" asked the Skeith, "You were the one who dropped it!"

"Oh, don't even," muttered the Kougra, putting his paws on his hips, "Remember the incident in Faerieland? You're such a clumsy oaf!"

The two quarreled well into the evening, neither noticing that during their argument they had drifted quite far away from their original position in the ocean. Suddenly, just as Skib brought up a rather unfortunate occurrence involving the Usukiland shopkeeper and a Sludgy, the two island natives felt the tiny rowboat heave in the near darkness.

"What... was... that?" asked Kino slowly. He whirled around, but a thick layer of haze had settled in the darkening sky.

"I can't see!" cried the Skeith as the boat lurched again. The two cautiously walked to the front of the boat and squinted their eyes, surprised to see a Peophin with her head sticking out of the water.

The Peophin smiled at them and dove back down underwater. The two felt the boat move again, and noticed that the Peophin was turning their little rowboat around.

Through the haze, Kino and Skib could see that the Peophin had risen back out of the water, and now nodded her head and motioned forward.

"What's she doing?" wondered Skib aloud.

"She's playing Chia Bomber," muttered Kino cynically, glaring at the Skeith. "Are you blind? She's leading us towards Mystery Island!"

"How do you know that?" asked the confused Skeith as Kino rowed through the haze.

"Because there's Mystery Island!" cried Kino, pointing towards the dark shape that slowly began to appear through the thick fog.

Kino and Skib both exchanged joyful looks with each other, but then turned to the Peophin which had led them back to their home.

"What's your name?" called Kino.

The Peophin turned towards the little boat, smiled, and dove back under the water, searching for another ship to lead back to home. Confused, Kino and Skib continued to row in the same direction until Mystery Island was in clear view.

"Y'know," said the Skeith as the boat bounded towards the shore, "She could have just given us a new compass."
