Mrs. Prenderghast
by spukl1

Ahh! Mrs. Prenderghast, why do you scare?
“Oh dear, oh me?” I didn’t mean to there.
Begone! She’ll cry, but not really mean it,
Just run around back and come again in a bit

She haunts that house, keeping paws from art
If you don’t know her well, she’ll give you a start.
Her estate is enormous! She loves to walk around
Visitors bother her, you should stay off her grounds.

Just ask little Fenwick, and his friends,
She absolutely spooked them, to their wits ends!
“Begone” she screamed, emerging from the wall,
“Aarghh!!!” they cried, and ran faster than they can recall.

Mrs. Prenderghast loves her petpet ghosts
They keep her company and always stay close
She does get lonely every once in a while,
But her painting and memories make her smile

She is a blameless, kind ghost, often misunderstood.
She wants to rest in peace, for once, for good.
The day will come, when thieves no longer come
Her art will be safe and she will become mum.

Ahh! Mrs. Prenderghast, why do you scare?
“Oh dear, oh me?” I didn’t mean to there.
With love for art and disdain for the greedy,
She may be cranky but she isn’t needy.

It's fall!
by suzerz

In the center of Neopia Central
a sign suddenly appears,
Neopets start to congregate
and many of them cheer.

"Gather round,
come one, come all,
it's time to celebrate
the fall!"

The air is crisp, it's getting cool.
Leaves are turning different shades
of oranges, reds, yellows and browns -
large jumping piles are made.

Neopets start lining up
for apple bobbing with Bart.
Sometimes the prizes are really good
but the apples can be tart.

Fall can be mysterious
and also kind of spooky
Neopians visit the Haunted Woods
and find that Brain Tree's a little kooky.

One final place to stop this year
is the seasonal section of the NC Mall.
It's always exciting to see what's released
to celebrate the fall.

Enjoy the cooler weather
before you need a scarf and hat,
and make sure to remember -
HEY! Watch out for that bat!!

Happy Fall Ya'll!

Spookiest
by peacelovebliss

The spookiest night of the year
once again is finally here
Are you feeling ecstatic
or are you trembling with fear?
Might you (once more) go a bit mad
looking for Trick-or-Treat Bags?
Famous Neopians can be ever
wickedly tricky but pretty clever.
Whether you wear something scary
or come as you already are,
even a visit to the Haunted Woods
will have you in a dark, ghoulish mood
With exhilarating thrills and tricks
when it comes to frightening fun
The Brain Tree need not inform me
that this event’s the best one!

C -lo-sing Timee...
by ginasoules

The lovely Sophie has stopped posing.
The sweaty Bagatelle need a hosing.
The Gates of The Deserted Fair Grounds - hear
        them closing?
   Good-bye, Haunted Woods' time!

The Big Blue Pandaphant has finished hauling.
The Spider Grundo has started sprawling.
The Wheel of Misfortune, and it's daily
           mauling mighty'.

No creature can be creepy
      when their feeling rather sleepy.
So to act their beastly best,
it must get a proper rest.

The horrid Esophagor are widely yawning.
The Evil Zumagorn are awake and spawning.
A brand-new day will soon be dawning,
                      with shout and rout subline
and a healthy dash of grime.

     But for now, ta-ta, adieu
         buenas noches, ciao to you.
     Bing-bong, the closing bell
          begins to chime.
The spooky can tell, it's time to go.
So long, Haunted Woods' we exclaimed!
              we'll be back...
                 all in good-time!

Who's that Pocket-Haunt?
by acaesha

Deep in the woods
In the midst of Hallows' eve
You catch a glimpse of white
Floating where it stood
Above the fallen leaves
Haunting eyes and vacant smile

Who am I?

Best sellers in a tower hidden
Weapons I inspire
Both golden and worth millions
But each cheaper than slinging fire

I look like a charm for calm weather
Won't let come the heavy rain
But on their head a tether
While I move unchained

Tell your tale of woe
I'll let you soak your tears
But don't dare blow your nose
You'll ruin my cheer

Not for the faint of heart
I'm fond of random scares
As you roam, stay on guard
I follow home the unaware

Not a creature under a sheet
Out for a trick or treat
Nor a spectre untouched
I haunt your pockets
But I'm not a thief
Relax your grip, unclutch

I'm a Ghostkerchief!

Secrets of the Haunted House
by xxskyisfallingxx

Upon the hill, a mansion stood
Brooding, dark, and bold
So wearied from the passing years
And the weight of truths untold

Four ‘pets strolled through the Woods below
Draik, Lupe, and Kacheek
And an Elephante to lead them
Who would now begin to speak.

“They say these woods are haunted,
But it was not here the curse was born.
Nay, not beneath the spindly trees,
Who, by autumn’s breath, were shorn.

“The curse lies in the mansion--
In the monsters living there.
What say we go inside and
See if folk are right to fear?”

The ‘pets agreed, and so they climbed
The hill up to the house.
They kicked and pushed the broken door
And flung away their doubts.

But once inside, the shadows pressed
And they soon drifted apart
To face the dust and gloom
With shallow breaths and trembling hearts

A blood-red talon, the Draik did see,
With three curved, glossy claws,
He crept forward to get a closer look,
And was slammed flat to the floor

The Lupe was first to hear his screams
And thought it wise to turn around
But before he could take a step
A scaly hand covered his mouth.

The Kacheek ran down the hall,
And met a beast with fearsome jaws,
At the sight of its yellow needle-teeth,
He passed out and knew no more.

Back at the start, the Elephante,
Stood by the porch to wait,
But even so, he could not escape
His friends’ appalling fate

One by one, the ‘pets were brought
To a room with windowed light
Where, at last, their frightened eyes
Beheld the keeper of their plight

And what a sight it was to see!
The Tyrannian Beast of old
With seven younglings by its side
Calling this mansion home

The Draik cried out and hid his face,
“Tyrannian monsters? Here?”
“What evil lured them to this house--
What drove them from their lair?”

But whether they came in search of food,
Or to flee winter’s nearing hand,
The ‘pets inside the house that day
Would never fully understand

They struck the beast and ran away;
Behind them--a roar like thunder
The ‘pets dove out the window
Smashing glass and their wits asunder

Upon the lawn, they tumbled out,
The grass withered and brown,
Like husks themselves, they set out
To return to their hometown

Three moons passed, deep in the woods
Before they made it home
Hungry, cold, and thirsty,
Their clothing ragged to the bone

When asked what tragedy befell them,
The four friends could not tell
And for all their days, did not return
To the house where monsters dwell

A Day For The Brain Tree
by cookiez101

A burden larger than
pulsing ochre slimy cells, sticky
with bittersweet. To protect

Neopia from The Beast
comes with
grouching
and sour puckering.

Visitors grumble
about splinters tossed,
eyes crazed and mouth foaming
as he sends you away. A hunt for
another date
those invisible
headstones.

But
you would prickle, too;
slamming roots and
bristling bark if
consumed by
vague shadow.

So on this Hallowed night,
when the Haunted Woods is
aglow with lanterns and spells
and candy-frenzied feet, crinkling bags.

Bring the Brain Tree
some morbid information
and a candied treat.

Humble presents
for an unspoken hero,
image marred by
moodiness.

He remains:
knotted to earth
for eternity.

Halloween Prank Background: Lament of the Fooled
by _brainchild_

Well, this was such a rotten prank!
For trouble I will never thank
The imbecile who caused this mess.
The scoundrel ought to just confess!

Who toilet papered all the trees?!
I certainly am never pleased
By paper strung well past my reach.
For some assistance I beseech!

I'll need a rake to get it down.
I hope you understand my frown!
For one, I'm not a Blumaroo,
So I can't jump toward branches. Boo!

It's also strewn across the grass!
All over ground, a giant mass
Of toilet paper wrecks my day.
I shake my head in pure dismay!

I wish I knew who pulled this prank.
I'm really angry, to be frank!
Some time I'll spend outside the house
Undoing pranking of some louse.

A Ghost Story
by liminalnostalgia

The ghost acara had been following them
for a while now. Neither the wocky nor the aisha were sure
how long they’d been walking; only
that the night air was getting colder,
and that there were eyes
in the trees. The wocky wondered aloud
if they should turn back, and the aisha
didn’t answer. They both knew it didn’t matter; either way,
they’d still be lost. Neither of them mentioned
their ghostly companion, believing
that if they didn’t, they could pretend it wasn’t real.
But this was real:
they were lost in the Haunted Woods on Halloween night,
and that certainty hung between them in the air
like a spyder. The aisha’s earstalk twitched at the call
of an unfamiliar petpet somewhere above them,
and the wocky shivered. "So much for trick or treating…"
The aisha shushed him. Every sound, every smell, every flicker
in the corner of their eyes since they’d entered the woods
was new to them, and therefore, was frightening. But the rustle
of leaves to their right and the faint sound
of a laboured voice reminded the little neopets
a little too much
of the zombie movie they’d seen the night before –
and they took off running deeper into the woods.
A mess of gnarled branches stopped them,
knots in the eerie grey bark watching
as they slowly backed away.
Dead end.
"Do you think whatever that was followed us?" the aisha panted,
and the wocky’s tail twitched as he listened, then shook his head.
"I don’t hear footsteps." The aisha glanced over her shoulder
and accidentally locked eyes
with their ghostly companion,
a few paces back, half hidden by dark leaves.
The aisha quickly looked away, prodding at the branches
that blocked their path. She knew
they would be too stubborn to budge. There was no way forward.
But there was no way back. What would happen
to the little aisha and her wocky friend? Would some haunted critter
catch up to them and seal their fate? Would they become
just another ghost story to inhabit the Haunted Woods?
Or would the third member of their party
finally make themselves known, guide their new friends
out of the darkness? Ghosts can be quite kind
if they’ve reason to, after all. But the first sketches of sunlight
were beginning to line the horizon, and the trees shut their eyes
at dawn. We can only watch this story unfold from the hollows
of the trees, and when the eyes in their bark open again at nightfall,
the two little pets will be gone.
