| Another day at the office for Matt, Neopia’s Sewage Surfer, known for fixing pipes and solving problems in the sewers while enjoying his favorite activity, surfing. To this day, there’s no professional like him. No one knows better which underground tunnels or drainage systems are best for surfing.
At his workstation, an alarm interrupted his morning. A message flashed on his screen: “Anomalies detected under Defenders HQ, Neopian Plaza. Flooding and possible structural failures.” Nothing out of the ordinary, he thought at first. On the contrary, he figured it would be a good spot for morning surfing. Matt was used to the dirt and chaos.
Matt finished waxing his surfboard, grabbed his tools, a couple of spare parts, and headed to the site. When he reached the main junction, the tunnel lights were flickering, and although water was already starting to pool, the flow was suspiciously low.
“Bay. Not a good day to surf here.” he thought, and went down the stairs.
He reached the lowest level, and he was shocked by what he found. The water that should have been feeding Defenders HQ was being diverted into a hole, which, based on his experience, it was one that only very advanced technology could have created.
“This is not just a plumbing job anymore”, the Wocky muttered to himself as he finished examining the hole. Moments later, he decided to use the station’s intercoms to call… |

The HQ directly. "Defenders... this is Sewage Surfer Matt." Matt's anxious voice echoed through the empty tunnel. “There’s a bigger issue here than a leaky pipe. I found a hole under the foundation and it’s pulling half of the city’s flow into it. It doesn’t look like it was carved by basic tools, or even sharp claws. This looks… engineered.”
A crackle played back on the intercom. “Copy, Sewage Surfer. What do you mean… engineered?” An operator had picked up and replied with an uneasy tone, like they did not want to know the answer.
Matt inspected the hole closely, inspecting the singed edges as if the stone had been carefully burned off. He gripped his surfboard tightly. “Not sure. But I’m about to find out.” With those last words, he flicked his headlamp on and started to slide into the opening. The descent was not as bad as he had expected but he suddenly found himself in a place he did not recognize. The walls looked ancient, etched with strange markings that sent a chill up his spine.
As he straightened himself up, he heard a strange low hum coming from deeper in the tunnel. As his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he gasped as he caught a glimpse of a shadowy figure passing by in the distance. It must’ve been his imagination…

He blinked a few times to help his eyes adjust a little quicker. The low hum softly vibrating down the walls of the tunnel.
"What in Neopia could have done this?" he questioned out loud.
He slowly took in the sheer size of the tunnel, then the smell of something burning, then he notices the walls-
"What the...." his sentence trails off.
Matt picks up his surfboard and placed his free hand on the wall. His fingers traced the etchings as he examined them closer. "Hmm..." he let out a sigh as he looked down the dark tunnel towards the humming sound. He stepped forward.
As he approached the hum, the sound started to swell. The hum grew to a roar. The vibrations got so heavy that Matt laid his ears back to protect them. The air got thick, and the burning smell was suffocating. Something behind Matt caused a loud thud. He quickly spun around to scan his surroundings...

Matt startled with a yelp when his eyes halted on a tall, looming silhouette in the dark mist behind him.
The thuds continued with the footsteps of the figure.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Slow and rhythmic, they were intentional. Each step was an announcement of entry meant to turn the Sewage Surfer’s head.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Stepping into a ray of dim light from a grate overhead, the shadowed presence was illuminated just enough to make out its most notable features.
The figure was cloaked in black with broad shoulders. Washed out, pistachio coloured skin emerged from the neckline of the cloak and led to crimson red, beady eyes and a wide, yellowed smile.
“D-Dr. Sloth?!” The Wocky asked incredulously, retreating backwards.
“In the flesh,” the villain crooned, never stopping his slow and menacing footwork.
“What have you d-done?” Matt demanded, trying his best to steady his voice. He was unsuccessful.
The edges of his form flickered, taking the Wocky off guard.
“Was this a hologram?” he thought to himself, gathering his wits about him.
“I’m just making some… adjustments to the municipal sewer network. That’s all,” Dr. Sloth answered nonchalantly. “Why don’t you turn around and see for yourself?”
The insane evil scientist laughed maniacally as his hologram flickered.
With his heart thumping in his chest, Matt turned around to see…

A pool of murky liquid pooled in the middle of a cave. The tunnel opened to a wide underground cave, with water flowing from the pipes hovering overhead. As the water from the pipes poured into the pool, it turned an oily rainbow colour. Matt thought he could see the colour of the liquid change. One second it was green, another second it was blue, then purple.
“What is that…?” Matt uttered without thinking. He stepped cautiously toward it, careful not to get too close. The burning smell reeked and stung his nose.
“It’s a Transmogrification Potion!” The hologram Dr. Sloth cackled with excitement. “One that turns each Neopet into their Mutant form. Isn’t it brilliant?”
Matt’s stomach sank. If this got into the pipes of Neopia, chaos would ensue. Every Neopian would turn Mutant. He needed to stop this, now. Starting with what he does best - fixing the pipes. He grabbed his trusty wrench and climbed side of the cave wall in an attempt to reach the closest pipe, but as he reached out…

A blast from a ray gun knocked his wrench out of his paw. It fell into the murky liquid and soon disappeared from sight.
He felt a sting of pain saying goodbye to his favourite wrench, though he held onto the hope that he could retrieve it once this ordeal was all over.
He quickly jumped back into the tunnel and slowly peeked his head out to see the source of the blast. The Dr. Sloth hologram was now nowhere to be seen, but instead he could see figures standing in all of the pipes around the cave.
As he looked more closely he could see that they were all Mutants and most likely Dr. Sloth's new minions.
He took a deep breath and searched through his trusty bag of supplies for something else he could use to both fix the pipes and defend himself.
Soon he found...

...his plumbing blowtorch.
Matt grinned. He could weld the pipes shut, and even though the Mutant Neopets seemed to be staring blankly at him, they probably wouldn't be reckless enough to underestimate the power of a plumber's humble torch.
The Wocky clicked the button on the side of his torch, and it blazed into life, a single blue and orange flame illuminating the cave and the faces of the Mutants, who were now shuffling toward him silently, but steadily.
"Don't move, I've got a torch, and I know how to use it!" he said, waving the tool aloft. "This is your last warning!"
But as he brandished his torch, stray embers dropped into the oily rainbow water, and ignited a fire that blazed to life in the cave, with Matt and the Mutant Neopets still inside...

“Uh oh!” Matt yelled as the flames exploded with the oily water adding to their intensity.
The Mutant Neopets recoiled from the flames, but there was no place to run. Matt quickly climbed up to a pipe above him and tried to loosen it. He then hoped that it was a clean water pipe and not full of sewage. With one final twist of the wrench, the pipe fell and water started rushing into the cave.
“Well now there are no more flames!”
Instead, though, the cave was now flooding with the Mutant Pets and Matt inside. Unable to swim against the strong current of the water, Matt and the Mutant Pets were quickly swept out of the cave.
“Argh!” Matt groaned as the Mutant Pets also struggled against the current. Soon, Matt saw a light at the end of the cave tunnel and ended up out at sea.
Neopians screamed as the Mutant Pets took over their boats which were set to sail toward Roo Island. Suddenly, Matt’s surfboard also got swept out of the cave and towards him. He grabbed it and road the waves over to the boats. He then picked up the surfboard and used it to push the Mutant Pets back onto shore where a Korbat dressed in orange stood.
“Quick, get the Morphing Potions ready!”
He turned to several trainee Defenders who managed to apprehend the Mutant Pets and administer the respective Morphing Potions to restore them.
The Korbat then turned to Matt. “I got your distress call and saw the whole thing. You did very well, although I do think you will have a lot of plumbing to fix afterwards.
“Oh he-he, sorry. But Sloth is still on the loose!”
“We’ll put some Defenders on the case to go track him and we'll alert the Space Faerie. You’ve done your part and I’d be happy to welcome you, the Sewage Surfer, as our newest Defender...what do you say?...”

Matt thought for a moment. "I'm honoured to be considered for the Defenders, but I can't accept..."
The Korbat looked surprised. "You're turning us down?"
"That's right. I already have an important job. And if you'll excuse me, I have work to do."
Over the next several hours, Matt worked to fix the damage that had been done to the sewage system. The bemused Korbat loaned him a team of Defenders to get the work done. Even a few of the freshly un-transmogrified Neopets, still looking as if they had just awoken from a long dream, offered to lend a hand. Together, they managed to get everything back into working order.
"A job well done!" said Matt, wiping his hands. He stowed his trusty wrench back into his pack. With a wave to the Defenders, he was on his way. He made it home just in time for his bedtime alarm.
"Well, that was quite the day," he said, climbing into bed. "I wonder what tomorrow will hold..."
He was, after all, the Sewage Surfer - and there was always work to be done.
The End.
