Story One Thousand Two Ends Friday, October 24

A knock was heard, followed by a flurry of giggles.

Edna scowled as she ignored the interruption and threw a set of Chewy Licorice Aisha Ears into her latest spell. The brew bubbled from a bright orange to an hazardous vomit green. It was coming along nicely. However, less could be said about everything else going on in her life at present.

A new hip and trendy prank had arisen in the Haunted Woods, where little Neopets of all ages and species came knocking on old Edna’s doors, only to immediately run away giggling. At first, she didn’t give it much thought - children tended to do silly things to amuse themselves. Nothing a good old Edna threat of turning them into toads couldn’t fix. Surely it was just a one-time thing.

But to her dismay, the absurdity continued. Knocks came at all hours of the day, startling her out of her concentration, her brewing - and once, even her sleep! Something was horribly wrong and it wasn’t until a visit to the Crumpetmonger a few weeks later that she learned the name of this insidious plot against her: Ding Dong Ditch the Witch.

Edna was no stranger to being the outcast - in fact, she quite enjoyed it! However, a witch needs her beauty sleep and quiet time for brooding and scheming, almost as much as she needs a couple of extra warts on her nose.

This rubbish needed to be stopped, and she knew just the place to go...

She needed to visit the Spooky Petpets shop. A werhond or two patrolling her front yard would scare off these miserable children.

Edna extinguished the flame under the potion she was brewing; retrieved her travelling hat from her closet, and pulled a cloak over her shoulders. The potion needed to steep for five hours anyhow. Plenty of time to visit the shop and come back — possibly with a detour to the Crumpetmonger.

The brioche she’d bought the last time had been far too sweet. She was sure they must have taken her valuable feedback into account, delivered after she spat out that first sugary mouthful right there at the table. And surely by now they had prepared a new version. It was only right that she go try it.

The Zafara stepped outside, and quickly performed a charm to seal her front door. She wouldn’t put it past those hooligans to attempt breaking in next.

And so Edna stepped onto the moonlit road leading to the Haunted Woods. Not ten minutes into her walk, she saw…

A group of young hoodlums wondering up the road in her direction. Surely they were on their way to her abode to get up to that nonsensical tomfoolery. Just another band of children looking to disturb her peace, her work!

Shadows danced across the path as the clouds drifted in the sky, slowly concealing the moon behind them as the night drew on. A sly smile stretched across Edna's face. Those children think they can try to disturb her then run away? She's about to show them how you really disturb an unsuspecting victim.

Still draped in her black cloak, she slipped into the trees on the roadside and nimbly manoeuvred through the foliage. Years of navigating the forest ensured she would not be heard as she approached the still totally unaware group.

She didn't have her travel bag of magical items, she was sure she would have a lovely little transformation potion tucked in one of her pouches. However, she did have a frazzling potion on hand because, well, it's the Haunted Woods, and she knew better than to wander unprepared.

Let's see how they like not knowing what's up from down in the middle of the night, she thought to herself as she readied to toss the potion at the foot of the group...

Edna steadied her aim and just as she was about to throw the potion she slipped on a mossy patch beneath her inadvertently tossing the potion up in the air.

Edna barely had time to compose herself before she realized what she done and let out a silent, "Oh no," as the potion came crashing on her hat. The viscous liquid oozed through the fabric and began dripping off the brim as Edna became increasingly dizzier and dizzier.

"This is...ugh, ridiculous," Edna muttered through gritted teeth as she tried to gain her balance. As the effects continued to mount Edna found herself unable to make sense of her surroundings any further. Concocting a mediocre potion was beneath her, after all. She tried to steady herself against a tree, her hand slipping and her balance giving way once again.

"Agh!" Edna cried out.

"What was that?" one of the kids from earlier piped up.

"They can't see me like this. This is absurd," Edna said to herself annoyed. She covered herself in her cloak once more and slunk back into the shadows, desperate to move away from the ever nearing voices.

It wasn't long before Edna had made it far enough away that the children's voices could no longer be heard. The potion's effects were still in full swing however. Edna sighed. She was lost in her own backyard. How embarrassing.

Before Edna could continue any further she heard the crunch of a twig behind her. Wary of the Haunted Woods' potential residents, she reached into her cloak and readied her wand, when suddenly...

Through her frazzled haze, Edna heard snuffling and little curious whimpers at her feet. Lowering her wand and crouching down to get a better look, she saw a little pack of Berghers. They were little brown and black puppy Petpets with bones protruding from the tops of their adorable heads and bright red collars.

The little Berghers were leaping and bounding up, scrambling to get to their newest friend in an attempt to lick the old witch’s face. The Zafara couldn’t help but smile as she reluctantly accepted their sweet greeting.

“You know, you aren’t quite menacing, but maybe I don’t have to pay a visit to the Spooky Petpets shop after all…” she chuckled to the Berghers. After counting them, she realized that there were six equally happy and playful Petpets at her feet.

With that many Petpets, she had enough for a guard to put this Ding Dong Ditch the Witch business to a stop. She just needed to find or create a spell to alter their appearance or demeanour enough to scare the delinquent children knocking on her door.

After a moment of thought, Edna came up with a plan to implement once she was back home with her trusted cauldron.

“Follow me, pups!” she said, the frazzling potion beginning to wear off.

Through the dark and twisting branches of the Haunted Woods, Edna the Witch led her new gaggle of Petpets back to the spiralling, decrepit tower she calls home…

"Woof!" "Yip..." "Bark." Growl, whimper "HOWL!!!"

Okay... thought Edna to herself, maybe training six Berghers was biting off more than she could chew. The little Petpets seemed to share a single brain cell, and a Slorg could pick up commands faster than these six pups.

In the week since bringing them home, she had ruined three potions! First one, Bergher tossed in an Almost Gummy Rat, the next day, another bumped into her leg and made her add double the amount of Cobrall Root required. The castle had smelt like burning licorice for three days after they went running outside to terrorize the Esophagor and she'd left the cauldron brewing too long to wrangle them up.

To top it all off, Ding Dong Ditch the Witch had picked up. The knocking only seemed to set the six off on a series of incessant howls and growls. She could barely concentrate. Edna was tired. She needed guard dogs, not liabilities to her potion making.

She turned to scowl at the Berghers who panted their tongues drooling as they jumped on her skirts.

"That's it!" She cried, "You all need to be scared straight!"

She wrestled all six out the door and lead the group past the wanderer camp, and into Neovia...

With much struggle, she finally arrived at the Deep Catacombs. The usually short trek to Neovia felt like a a tiresome hike with the six boisterous Petpets in tow, barking and jumping excitedly. Berghers being Spooky Petpets, were naturally unfazed to the Haunted Woods and other scary things, Edna included. The Deep Catacombs should do the trick with scaring them into obedience.

“Alright, in you go!” Standing on the steps of the Catacombs, Edna shooed the Berghers towards the entrance. After chasing each around here and there, they finally entered the Catacombs one by one. Their barks echoed from the inside until Edna could no longer hear them.

Silence at last. Edna heaved a sigh of relief and headed back to her tower. This would give her enough time to concoct a potion strong enough to turn the Berghers into proper guards.

——

In the comfort of her tower, she worked quietly around her cauldron. The sound of the bubbling soothed her. But then she felt like she was missing something.

The Berghers. She missed them. She gagged at the new found emotion. What a disgusting feeling! But after a couple of hours of pacing back and forth, realizing she wasn’t able to get her brewing done, she went back to Neovia.

When she got to the entrance of the Deep Catacombs, the group of Berghers were there waiting for her. However, she noticed…

...a group of kids walking down the path from which Edna had come. The path which led to her tower.

"I can't wait to play Ding Dong Ditch the Witch!" a Bori was telling their Skeith companion. "Everyone says it's not scary, it's fun!"

"Of course it's fun!" a Chia chimed in. "Imagine the look on the witch's face..."

Edna scowled and stepped behind one of the pillars at the entrance of the Catacombs, watching those children - those brats - heading out to play her absolute worst favorite game.

She looked to the Berghers, and all of them looked back at her, alert as though waiting for her instructions. Edna thought of the potion she had left behind to find the Berghers. Her plan was coming together.

Then, a slow smirk spread across her face. Her plan was about to become perfect. Now, she could exact the perfect revenge on those bratty kids who had nothing better to do than disturb her. All thanks to the Berghers, who had not returned from the Deep Catacombs empty-handed.

After all, at the Berghers' feet was...

A Music Box of Forgotten Souls.

It had been a while since she had seen one of these, but she knew one melody from it would awaken restless spirits, which were plentiful throughout these lands. It would mix perfectly with the potion she made to turn the Berghers into proper, and scary, guards.

Those bratty kids think they're so clever, but she was going to show them true fear! She was going to scare the wits out of them and make sure no one would ever mess with her again!

"Berghers follow me! We're taking a shortcut home. You must stay quiet, got it?" Although the Berghers were still young, they seemed to slowly be learning how to follow commands. That stint in the Catacombs must've done the trick!

Quickly she weaved through the inky-black trees with the Berghers at her heels. She knew Neovia and the Haunted Woods like the back of her paw, since she had lived here for more years than she could remember now.

Soon, she made it back to her tower, and thankfully the kids were not in sight yet. She swiftly ushered the Berghers in and told them to stay near the entrance.

They looked up at her with their big round eyes, and she couldn't help but feel her heart flutter at the sight. She shook the thought out of her head and reminded herself she was THE witch of the Haunted Woods. She had a reputation she needed to keep up, and gushing over these annoying but strangely lovable creatures would only ruin her image!!

She left the Berghers alone and checked on the potion she had been working on, which was now the perfect poisonous purple colour!

She looked out the window and saw the kids walking toward her tower in the near distance, so she knew it was almost time.

"Hehehehe," Edna couldn't help but laugh as she placed the music box outside her door and winded it up. Judging by the pace of the kids they would arrive here in about three minutes. She steadied the old box and laughed at the thought of angry spirits greeting the kids.

An eerie melody filled the air as the Music Box of Forgotten Souls sprang to life. She could feel the air grow icy cold and suffocating, indicating the presence of spirits nearby.

Next, she grabbed the potion she had made and went back to the Berghers. Although they were adorable little beings now, soon they'd be terrifying...

"No, stop licking me!" She had been trying to get them to drink the potion, but instead all six of them had pounced on her. Their paws were softer than the hairs of a young Werelupe, and their eyes were even bigger than Meepit eyes, and of course far cuter. Before she even realized, she was soon smiling and playing along with the Berghers.

"ARGH! What is happening to me?" She couldn't bring herself to give her cute Petpets the potion, and the screams from her entrance meant the kids were here.

Unfortunately, she had left the door slightly ajar, and in their panic the Bori, Skeith, and Chia she saw earlier ran into her tower, abruptly stopping in their tracks at the sight of Edna and the Berghers before them, and the malevolent spirits summoned by the music box behind them.

The Chia was the first to speak up, "Edna, we're so sorry! Please help us!"

Edna absolutely did not want to help them, but she could see the Berghers were frightened as well and she didn't want that.

Without even breaking a sweat, she sent a vanishing curse hurling at the ghosts before she closed the music box.

When she turned back around she saw the young Neopians happily playing with her Berghers before they noticed her staring at them.

The three Neopians looked at her apologetically and hung their heads in silence, fidgeting and obviously searching for the right words.

Edna slammed the door behind her and delighted in the look of fear on their faces for a few moments before she broke the silence.

"Tell you what... If you stop playing Ding Dong Ditch the Witch, and you spread the word... Then I'll let you play with my Berghers when you want... For a price of course."

The young Neopians happily agreed, and soon "Edna's Quests" as well as "Edna's Berghers" became the most popular attractions in the Haunted Woods.

The End.
