Start by drawing a circle for Hoban's head. Next, lightly sketch a pair of crossed lines on the circle to help you place Hoban's facial features later on. Then, draw a long oval shape underneath the head for Hoban's body.
It's now time to make Hoban's arms and feet. His right arm (which is on your left) is straight, so draw a tube that starts at Hoban's shoulder and ends with a hand shape. Hoban's left arm (on your right) is bent, so make a curved line that comes from his shoulder for his upper arm, then add his lower arm and hand. Finally, draw two flattened oval shapes beneath Hoban's body for his feet.
Connect Hoban's head to his body with two short lines for his neck. Next, draw in Hoban's hair.
Erase any extra lines you have. Then, start to work on the navigator's legs. Hoban's wearing some trousers that are quite baggy, so when you're drawing his legs, be sure to make the lines kind of bunchy-looking.
It can be chilly out there on the deck of the Cyodrake's Gaze, so be sure to include Hoban's little hat and long scarf. Don't forget to draw the bag for his maps too, as well as his compass. After all, he'd be lost without it!
Erase your remaining extra lines. Next, draw a large map in Hoban's hands. Finally, just in front of the top of Hoban's head, make two leaf-like shapes for the ends of his Aisha ears.
Connect the ear shapes that you drew in the last step to Hoban's head by making two long, thin stalks. Remember to include the holes in his hat that his ears poke out of. Then, add Hoban's fringe to finish his hair, and begin drawing his face by making the Aisha's large eye markings. Lastly, draw Hoban's tail.
Give the navigator's face a little more detail by creating his open mouth. Then, begin drawing his jacket and waistcoat. All of Hoban's clothes are a little too big for him, so remember to make them quite long.
Erase your extra lines and start working on adding even more detail to your drawing. On the eye markings you drew earlier, now include Hoban's eyes and eyebrows. Next, add some rolled-up charts and maps sticking out of his bag. Finally, refine the shape of Hoban's compass, which is hanging on the outside of his map bag.
It's now time to add lots of finishing touches to your drawing. Start by dividing the hand shapes you drew into separate fingers. Since Hoban is holding a map, his fingers should be curled up. Finish Hoban's face by adding a line between his eye markings for his Aisha nose and drawing his tongue inside his mouth. Finally, add some texture to his hair and buckles to his shoes.
Your drawing is almost complete! Erase any remaining extra lines and darken Hoban's shoes. As a special touch, draw a pattern on his scarf, add some lines to his maps and charts, and finish the face of his compass.
Make your drawing look especially realistic and interesting by adding plenty of colour and shading. You can use anything you'd like, from coloured pencils to a computer program.
