Awesome new sister site: The Lodge! Be sure to request a review from the talented Ricky!

Finished Clarity's review.

Tweaked the rules. ;)

Welcome

Important:
Trance will be going on a short hiatus during the holidays. It turns out we're going to London for a week, so I won't have much time to finish reviews. (Almost done with the Lodge's review- sorry about the long wait, Ricky.)
Welcome to Trance, a review site run by me, Lorna. Here at Trance, like at any other review site, you can get feedback on your own site. Rather than being graded, I like to give friendly feedback and constructive criticism. My reviews are my opinion only, and if I sound mean, I'm sorry. But you asked for it.
You wander through the fair. Some of the booths and tents are already packed up and only a few visitors remain. Night is coming and darkness is spreading out in the sky. The stars are scarce amongst the dark clouds. There are snowflakes beginning to fall from them. Perhaps a storm is coming?

You come across a tent without a sign. Being the inquiring sort of fellow that you are, you step in, wondering what could be in such a curious little place.

Welcome, guest, says an elderly woman. (How does she know your name?!?)

She has long, dark grey hair and dark eyes. You feel a bit uneasy, but she doesn't seem harmful. She is wearing a long purple robe and is seated on a red velvet cushion at a low pine table. On that table, is a crystal ball. Care to see your future?

Methods of Foretelling

Here at Trance, we offer several kinds of reviews for maximum customer satisfaction. You can choose to have your future told with a Prophecy, Palm Reading, or Crystal Ball. If none if these features suite your preferences, please contact me and I'd be happy to arrange something for you.
Prophecy (Long)
Our most in-depth type of review, I will discuss all aspects of your site. (The aspects are listed below.) This type of review is best for older, more established sites with experience. Not for: About Me pages, screenie, music, art, guild-related pages.

Name | Prophecy (Long) | Score (?/10) | Date | Browser

At a Glance:
What do I first see? A nice banner? A friendly welcome? I'll write about my first impression. This means, if the page is anchored, what do I see on the first page.

Layout:
What do I think when I first see the page? Do the colors and layout help your site and theme? Is it organized looking? Or is it just a jumbled mess? This also includes coding styling (headers and special text effects). Lastly, this may include how your site is organized, depending on your site.

Content:
Are there high quality graphics? Are there a lot of sites is it's a directory? Is it easy to find stuff? Again, is it organized? Is it original? Is there stolen work without credit? (If I find stolen content, I will do something about it, so don't steal.) Any major spelling/grammar errors will also be mentioned here. Lastly, this may include how your site is organized, depending on your site.

Sitely:
Content, but not the main stuff. Added extra stuff; affies, listers... Do you keep up with your updates? Are your link back buttons of good quality and relate to your theme? Are they easy to read? (Some fonts used are difficult to read, rendering themselves, in the opinion of many, useless.

Bonus Points:
You'd get bonus points for creativity, originality, or anything else of my choice. This gets a separate score which is added to the average of the other four. It'll be organized as follows:
  1. What you got it for: why you got it. (+ #points)
  2. What you got it for: why you got it. (+ #points)
Number of "Whats" varies. You may not get any!

Final Say:
Any last comments will also be written here.

Palm Reading (Short)
If you request to have your palm read, I will give you just a glance of your future. This is a less reliable method of predicting the future, so it will not be as detailed as a full length Prophecy. It's better for new sites or those with less content. But when I say "short," it's usually not that short, it's just not as in-depth as a Prophecy. If something looks acceptable, I won't even mention it; but that doesn't mean it's perfect, either. Available for all sites/pages.

First Impression:
What do I first see? A nice banner? A friendly welcome? I'll write about my first impression. (So if the page is anchored, what do I see on the first page.) Seeing as the first thing one notices is usually the related to, or is, the layout. So the First Impression section will be a concise combination of the At a Glance and Layout sections seen in a Prophecy.

Are there high quality graphics? Are there a lot of sites is it's a directory? Is it easy to find stuff? Again, is it organized? Is it original and creative? Any major spelling/grammar errors will also be mentioned here. How do you make the site uniquely yours?

Final Say:
Any last comments will also be written here.

Recommended: A simple yes/no. Would I recommend your site to others and would I come back if I needed what you have to offer.

Crystal Ball (Advice)
With this type of review, you will ask me a few questions and I will consult with my crystal ball to look into your future. Available for all sites/pages.

I'll probably have some extra comments/suggestions about other things relating to your site. You don't have to read it if you don't want.

Steps to Success

  1. I will review any type of site or petpage, including about me's, pet apps, and guild pages. Should I refuse your request, I promise a legitimate reason.
  2. You may get your fortune told as many times as you want, but only if you've changed your site a lot since your last review.
  3. Please do not have more than two pending reviews. More than that and you get a ton of fortune tellers all saying the same things. It's a waste of everyone's time.
  4. Once I have accepted your request, please do not majorly change your site. (It blurs my visions of the future.) Click the first tombstone to request.
  5. If I'm unclear in your review, please don't hesitate to ask questions. But please don't send me excuses after your review. Frankly, it's just plain annoying.

Please know that fortune-telling is a very time-consuming business so please be patient after sending in your form. Also, please specify if you want a Prophecy or Palm Reading. However, I may reverse that option if I feel there is too much or too little to write about for your choice.

Now that you've read the rules, would you like to request a review?

Oodles of Doodles | Palm Reading (Short) | 12/17/11 | FireFox

First Impression:
I first notice the the Krawk banner. It's nicely cropped and edited, though the effect seems better fitted for a comic/screenie page. The next thing I notice simplicity of the layout. That's great because it helps put the focus on the art, which is the most important part.

You've done a good job with the absolute navigation positioning, but it might look cooler if there was a 10-20px gap between the red bar and the top of the page. (If you need help on that, the Soroptimist has a lot of great guides listed.)

Also about the layout is the color. Like the layout itself, it is nice and simply and followed through upon with the banner. I like how you use the same exact shade of red throughout, it really ties the piece together nicely. The header fonts also remain the same, or at least similar in style, throughout which further helps. You may consider using the same style for the main headers as for the nav. A solid red background with beige text. Lastly, the headers are nice because they are descending in terms of font size.

Content:
The intro looks good and is nicely sprinkled with special text styling. Special text, as I like to call it, makes a chunk of otherwise boring looking text more interesting to read. A lot of people overdo it, but you've got it just right. The updates box could be a lot bigger (height-wise). Reading small text crammed into a tiny box is no fun at all.

The request section looks good. In in the fourth rule, I'd change it to, "I'll only draw you one picture at a time a per month..." Drawing someone one picture at a time for each month doesn't really make much sense.

The Form & Waiting List section could use some re-organizing. First, the form is tiny and illegible. Yes, people copy and paste into a Neomail, but many like to fill out the form there and then and then copy and paste. The background is good because it stands out and doesn't look like a div box of the update box style, but the text must be legible, meaning bigger and a more contrasting color, perhaps that nice beige color. Second, the first status sign really does not match the tone of the site at all. It's sort of bubbly whereas the vibe I get from your site is tranquil, professional, and sort of modern (due to the font choice). The Lunch Box has a lot of options to choose from or you could make your own, which I'm sure you're quite capable of. As to the organization of the section, I'd recommend the status signs on the upper left, as they are, with the waiting list below. On the right side of the section would be an enlarged textarea form that is the almost the same height as everything combined on the left (slightly shorter) and put a link to send it to you below the form.

All the Extras look good, but maybe give them the same colored background as the updates so people can tell where the actual div box is. I think it also looks a bit neater. I didn't see any specific problems here; good work.

The graphics themselves are amazing. The smooth curves, the choice of color, the

Sitely:
This section is nicely organized. The link buttons are all high quality, thought the fourth one doesn't really match the site. My only comment would be about the reviews and accomplishments: in the hover title, include the date. Dates make progress evident and who doesn't want to show off progress? Everything else looks good.

Final Say:
Overall, a very solid site. A few little tweaks here and there, I think, and you'll be pretty close to perfect. Upon reflection, you could make the font size a size bigger; as it is, it's rather small and the line-spacing makes it look even more condensed. You should either increase line spacing or increase text size by one. Or both, but I think doing one would be fine.

About Me
This is just a brief bio about me, Lorna, the reviewer.

Informative Info

Can we be affies/sister sites? / Can I list you?
I might accept you as an affie, but I'm not looking for another sister site at the moment. Neomail me (link in the nav) and we'll talk about being affies though. Anyone can list me; all I ask is that you tell me so I can link back.

I sent a request, but you haven't responded.
If I haven't responded, I simply haven't read it yet. I may not be on everyday, especially during the school year. Believe it or not, I do have a life outside of Neo.

Can I review you? / Would you like to enter my competition?
No, sorry. When I want a review or want to enter a SOTM, I'll request from/enter in a site I feel is good for me.

Why don't you offer Pro/Con reviews?
Anyone can do one, you don't need a "professional" reviewer to tell you what simply looks good or bad. Besides, they have little or no detail. That just doesn't work for me. If I'm going to review a site, I might as well do a good job, right?

Your main account (captinskippy7) has been frozen or your inbox is full!
Should my main account ever be frozen, which I highly doubt will even happen, Trance, should I continue playing on Neo, will be moved to the account mei_yun1996. Same goes for contacting me, though I highly doubt my inbox would ever get full either.

Tips

Here are some general tips. They are bases off common errors I see in sites and telling people the same thing over and over can get quite boring. So before you request a review, do yourself (and me) a favor by briefly reviewing a few of these tips. If you have tips or would like to see a topic covered here, feel free to neomail me with any comments or suggestions.

Centered Text
A lot of site owners nowadays center every single body of text. While some people think it looks cool or that it's a neat trick, a lot more people do not think so highly of it, myself included, of course. When used incorrectly, it looks messy and unprofessional. This being in the case of long, wordy body paragraphs. Centered text is harder to read because the start of each line changes, which forces the reader to search for the beginning of the next line. Though it may not seem like much work, it can quickly become quite tedious. This also means that centering bulleted lists is generally not a good idea.

However, centered text is not always bad. For instance, centering is often used on for formal occasions, such as invitations or greeting cards. In such cases, it can look very elegant and tidy. Why? Usually, only short phrases or single words are centered. If multiple lines are centered, they are generally formatted so that each line is about the same length, making it easy for readers to locate the beginning of the next line. So in the site-making community of Neopets, that generally means headers.

Which looks better?
  • Doesn't
  • this
  • look
  • nice?
  • Do
  • you
  • think
  • this
  • looks
  • messier?

A Sitely Story

Trance began... I'm actually not sure exactly, but it was a while ago, late in 2009 (I think). I started Trance because I received some very negative reviews about my new directory called Over the Horizon. It was promptly closed. I was inspired then, to give reviews of my own. Except I wanted to help people; not make them feel bad.
The name just came with the inspiration. Trance sounds kind of mystical or mysterious, or at least in my mind, and that's the way I wanted my site. Also, it reminds me of fortune tellers and such, so it fits nicely with the topic of reviews. A good review will give you ideas to improve upon in the future.

We had an anchored premade from Emma's Petpages. As you can see, I changed it up a lot, but it was way to dark and, overall, it was just plain ugly. Looking back now, I laugh at myself and think, What was I thinking?

As you can see, our second layout was also a customized template, also with page anchors. I found some really cool backgrounds, and even changed up the intro so they matched. But, alas, it just wasn't looking so well. We had a nice animated background, but the movement was too distracting. Things were just not working so well, so I changed it up again.

Our first custom layout, thanks to Kyuki. Pretty cool, isn't it? Another anchored set up, during this time, Trance progressed a lot; an award, first fanmail, a whole new section full of sub-sections, new affies/listers... so much progress! This layout was great for the mysterious, somewhat creepy feel of the site.

This was a really great layout from Out of Focus. I could easily organize everything and anything. I love the way the navigation wraps around the main title, so smooth and elegant. Also a huge content box for my large amounts of content.

After a month long hiatus, I found an amazing template from That Kills Me, but the hovering nav was my addition. It's was very poorly edited. Not much happened during this version; just one review, lost almost all affies and listers after a devastating link sweep.

I soon requested one from Halo (then Kenda) from Absolutly (then Wonder). The Kau image is so beautifully done that I was quite sad to part with it. But the creator wasn't too pleased, so she kindly offered me a new one several months later. Excited to see what masterpiece she would come up with this time, I agreed. (??/??/?? - Nov. 11, 2011)

A Brief Bio

I am 15 years old and live in MA. Aside from Neopets, one of my favorite pass times is soccer. As a freshmen, I played on the JV team for my school, so I guess I know what I'm doing. (Though it doesn't always feel like it!) I have also been playing the trumpet since 4th grade.

I also enjoy traveling because I'm really interested in other cultures. Lucky for me, my parents line of work allows them travel all over the world. This interest fits into my family nicely as well; each member of my family is from a different country. My dad being British, we travel to London once a year. And from my dad's British-ness, I've come to be a bit of a Doctor Who addict, though I also watch Psych and sometimes Glee.

I live in a nice house with my parents and my brother. We have two amazing dogs; a Jack Russel and an Airedale. Both are lively and pretty crazy. (But, of course, we love 'em anyway.) I also have a small catfish whom I call Whiskers. And for a fish, he's actually quite cute. ;)
