The Hunger Games... In Movie Form!
Like (0) | Dislike (0) | Comment (0)Now, if you haven't read the books you must! They are amazing! The story follows a girl named Katniss Everdeen who takes her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games, a fight to the death against 23 other kids from around the country. The Games are a reminder, a very cruel reminder, to the Districts of Panem that no one can overthrow the Capitol. Like many others in the District, Katniss is no fan of the Capitol and while in the Games she tries to outsmart the Capitol. In the end, she unintentionally starts something much bigger than she thought imaginable.
The books themselves are hard to put down. They're real page turners, each chapter ending in a cliffhanger and the books doing the same. I immediately had to get the second and third books because of the way the ended.

Anime
Recommended By: TinaTitle: Durarara!!
Writer: Ryohgo Narita
Illustrator: Suzuhito Yasuda
Genre: Action / Super Natural / Comedy
Rating: PG-13
Reason: Durarara!! is by far one of the best things I have ever watched. It's officially on my favorites list. I adore just about all the characters, the storyline is amazing and it keeps you on your toes. The story follows the life of a boy named Mikado Ryugamine who has just moved to Ikebukuro, Tokyo. He attends Raira Academy with his long time best friend, Kasaomi Kida. The two quickly befriend a girl named Anri Sonohara, who is in the same class as Mikado. While the three seem to be normal students, there are some secrets none of them are willing to share with the friends, all of which are later revealed towards the end of the series, ending off with a pretty epic ending. Other characters such as Celty Sturluson, Shinra Kishitani, Izaya Orihara, and Shizuo Heiwajima also play a major part of the plot. Especially Izaya and Celty, as Izaya is the root of all evil(in my opinion) and Celty is the savior of the innocent. When you're done with the series you'll be begging for a second season of it. I know I was, and honestly, I still am. Unfortunately a second season doesn't seem to be in our future just yet, but who knows. Maybe with enough demanding fans, there will be another season.

Recommended By: KittyTitle: A Curse as Dark as Gold
Author: Elizabeth C. Bunce
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: 12+
Reason: I've always been interested in retold fairy tales, and this one is one of the most elaborate ones I've ever seen. A Curse as Dark as Gold is based off the tale of Rumpelstiltskin, a fairy tale that has its origins in Germany. In this retelling, though, the girl does not get married to the king; Charlotte Miller's father dies, leaving her and her sister to (wo)man the old mill that's been in their family for as long as the town has been around. Stirwaters Mill has a peculiar curse on it, though: None of the male children of the current family have lived. The mill has been passed down from father, to uncle, to brother, to nephew, but never from father to son. Charlotte must find a way to keep the mill from being repossessed by the bank - her father took out a £2,000 mortgage, and she's nowhere close to paying it. Enter Jack Spinner, a mysterious figure that her sister summons in the middle of the night. He offers to reverse their fortune: He's served generations of Millers, but at a price. Can Charlotte figure out a way to keep her Mill - and keep her family safe from the curse that's dogged generations of Millers - before it's too late?
Rated 12+ for some suggestive content and very mild language.

Games
Recommended By: JesikaTitle: Alice: Madness Returns
Platform: PC / Xbox 360
Genre: Action / Adventure
Rating: M
Reason: Alice: Madness Returns is a sequel to American McGee's Alice. In Alice, there are some very unique weapons. Only Alice uses a pepper grinder as a weapon. Alice is a girl who was released from a insane asylum after her family died in a fire. She goes to this twisted version of Wonderland to escape reality. What I love about this game is that Alice has different dresses for every level. Switching up outfits in games is something I like to see. Alice is a fun game with a very unique twist on Wonderland.
If you do not like gory games, do not play this, there are a couple sicking scenes.

Title: The World Ends With You
Platform: Nintendo DS
Genre: Role-Playing Game (RPG)
Rating: Teen
Reason: The World Ends With You is the strangest, most heart-wrenching story you'll ever read -- wait, what? It's not a story? It's a game? Even better. You play through this story. It all starts when Neku Sakuraba, a teenage boy who has serious social issues, wakes up in the middle of Shibuya (a district in downtown Tokyo). He gets a message on his phone, telling him he's now in a game. He's playing for his life. He manages to make a "pact" (essentially, a partnership) with a girl named Shiki. He dubs her "Stalker" because she doesn't stop following him. Over the course of the seven-day game, Neku and Shiki must complete tasks in a certain amount of time - or forfeit their right to exist. Just when you think you've got everything figured out, the game throws something completely new at you. And I haven't even mentioned the fighting system. It takes place in real time. You fight with one character on the top screen (your partner; in this case, Shiki) using the control pad; you fight with Neku on the bottom screen using the stylus. You equip Neku with different pins that have "psychs;" they allow Neku to summon fire, falling boulders, swords, etc. There are over 200 of these pins to collect. If the two-screen battles are too much for you, you can have the computer take control of the top screen for you. Trends rule Shibuya (you have to wear the right items to get an attack or defense boost), monsters known as the Noise dwell within the shadowy recesses of peoples' minds, and Neku and Shiki might not make it out of the game alive. It all wraps up into one fantastic story that nobody with a DS should miss. Don't let the battle system scare you away! The writing is excellent; I would love to see an anime or a full-length manga based on this one. The story will bring you to tears the first time you finish. Now that I've had my rant, I'll leave you with the rating.
Rated T for Teen because of suggestive themes, strong language, and mega-violence.

Recommended By: KittyTitle: Ludwig Kakumei
Author: Kaori Yuki
Illustrator: Kaori Yuki
Genre: Comedy / Drama / Fantasy / Horror / Romance
Rating: PG-16
Demographic: Shojo
Reason: Ah, fairy tales. We all know the familiar stories - Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Rapunzel. But what if they were completely different from their Disney or Grimm Brothers incarnations? That's what Ludwig Kakumei tries to convey. Ludwig is a prince who has been thrown out of his kingdom for keeping beautiful women's corpses in glass boxes in his secret room. (Le gasp!) His father orders him not to return without a bride...and hilarity ensues. When he sends his servant, Wilhem, out to find princesses for him to pursue, he also asks that Will get the girl's measurements. (Ludwig has a...fetish, if you can't tell.) He finds characters from every corner of the universe - from Dorothea (a witch who's in love with Ludwig) to Friederike (Sleeping Beauty) to Lisette (Red Riding Hood turned assassin) - and proceeds to try to woo the ones that he finds. With assassins hunting his every move and the prince trying to find "the" girl so he can return to his kingdom, Ludwig Kakumei is a fantastic story. There's love, loss, betrayal, and murder. The art is beautiful - although the prince looks like a man-lady (gorgeous enough to be a woman, yet he's entirely male), and the story is engaging. It's a little short at about sixteen chapters, but it's worth reading.
Rated PG-16 for strong suggestive themes.

Movies
Recommended By: KittyTitle: Stardust
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: PG-13
Reason: Yet another fantasy/fairy tale setting for Kitty to recommend this issue! Stardust is a fantastic story set in England in about...the 1800s, I would say. Late 1800s. It is set in a village named "Wall," appropriate since there's a gigantic wall next to the village. It keeps people out of the magic kingdom next door. One night, a young man crosses the wall despite the gatekeeper trying to keep him out. He meets a princess in the magic kingdom, then returns to his home. Nine months later, a baby is delivered to the young man's house. Eighteen years later, the baby Tristan has grown into a young man much like his father, and he embarks on a journey to find a falling star to impress the love of his life. There's more than one person looking for the star, though. A trio of witches want the star's heart so they can become young again. A dark prince, Septimus (who looks remarkably like a very young Severus Snape), is after the star to become immortal. Tristan gets there first and finds out that the star is actually a young lady. He tries to get her back to Wall as a present for his love (who doesn't return the feelings), but trials ensue, including a troupe of sky-pirates, a traveling witch, a lost princess, ghost princes, and...betrayal! *cue lightening flash* It's a beautiful love story. Once you see it, you'll want to watch it again, immediately.
Rated PG-13 for...what, exactly? Almost non-existent suggestive themes? I'm not sure. There's no language. There's violence. Yay, violence! Oh, and blue blood. Not red. Blue.

Title: The Nightmare Before Christmas
Genre: Stop Motion Animation / Fantasy / Children
Rating: PG
Reason: The Nightmare Before Christmas is a masterpiece. There are details in every little piece. This movie is about a town, Halloween Town. Halloween Town has an idol: Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King! Well, when the Pumpkin King discovers Christmas, he decides he should handle Christmas this year instead of Sandy Claws. Not Santa Claus, Sandy Claws. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a great movie that is good for Halloween or Christmas.

Recommended By: TinaBand/Artist: In This Moment
Genre: Melodic Metalcore
Reason: Rise Against is a band that has lyrics that actually makes you think. They don't sing about anything pointless; every song has a reason. Even their name has a message in it. Rise Against's lead singer, Tim McIlrath, has a very distinct voice that is just amazing. His voice stands out from most lead singers. If you like music with a point and a message in it, Rise Against is definitely a band to listen to.

My Little Pony Season 2!
Like (0) | Dislike (0) | Comment (0)The plot for the new season is still unknown. In the first season the main goal was to first, save all of Equestria from the wrath of Nightmare Moon. After that was successfully done, all following episodes lead up to the six main ponies plus a dragon, going to the Grand Galloping Gala to have the best night of their lives. No one knows if there will be another gala to attend or any other high ranking event in which the Princesses are required to attend, though it is highly likely that there will be something of the sort where Celestia and Luna will be there to wrap up the second season.
That being said, I am a fully excited for the new season and even more so for the new merchandise that will be released to go along with it. :3

MANAGING EDITOR
So here we are with the grand distribution of The Scarlet Issue #2! I'm so proud of you guys for keeping this thing alive. It's working out splendidly! My brain's fizzling out now. I've edited pages, created recommendations, and sniffed out grammatical errors for a while. I've got to get some sleep. Later, guys!
I look forward to putting together the next issue (hopefully with some more submissions!) as well!
