The Hunger Games... In Movie Form!

WRITTEN BY TINA

If you're a fan of The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins then you know all about the up coming movie adaptation. The movie is set to release on March 23rd next year! It's all so very exciting for fans of the books, myself included. I've taken a look at the cast many times and have found that most of the characters don't really match up to what I had imagined, just like with the Twilight saga.

I won't go into detail about it because if I did, this article would be far too long. But I can say that I'm not happy with the cast. Probably the only characters I think they portrayed right were Cato(LOVE HIM! Shut up.), Effie, Rue, Glimmer, Foxface, and Thresh. That being said though, I can't think of any actors that would be better for the other roles. From what I've seen in the trailers, I really think they should have given Gale longer hair and actually gave Peeta blonde hair like he's supposed to have. But I'm not the casting director so what say do I have? I just hope they don't butcher the books too much like most movies tend to do.

Now, if you haven't read the books you must! They are amazing! The story follows a girl named Katniss Everdeen who takes her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games, a fight to the death against 23 other kids from around the country. The Games are a reminder, a very cruel reminder, to the Districts of Panem that no one can overthrow the Capitol. Like many others in the District, Katniss is no fan of the Capitol and while in the Games she tries to outsmart the Capitol. In the end, she unintentionally starts something much bigger than she thought imaginable.

The books themselves are hard to put down. They're real page turners, each chapter ending in a cliffhanger and the books doing the same. I immediately had to get the second and third books because of the way the ended.

Anime of the Month: Nana

Like (0) | Dislike (0)
Creator: Ai Yazawa
Genre: Drama/Romance/Music
Rating: PG-13
Episodes: 47
Chosen By: Tina

Nana is by far on of my favorite series. It's truly an amazing anime chock full of drama, romance and awesome music! The characters are easy to love and get attached too. The basic story of Nana follows two girls who meet on a

train to Tokyo. Both are named Nana, have the exact same birthday, and end up renting an apartment together. Nana Osaki has one goal in life: to be a famous singer. But as she makes her way through the music world she begins to question what it is she really wants. Nana Komatsu just wants to fall in love and live happily ever after. She's naive and "falls in love" often, which ends up getting her hurt most of the time. She grows up after living with Nana O. and learns a lot from her new best friend. The story has lots of twists and turns that will make you want to stay up all night and watch more. Trust me, it will.

Book of the Month: House of Night

Like (1) | Dislike (1)
Author: P.C. Cast and Kirsten Cast
Genre: Drama / Teen Romance / Mystery
Rating: 14+
Books: 8, last one coming out in October
Chosen By: Jesika

I have followed "The House Of Night" series since the very first book, and I can't wait till the last book comes out! It's one of my favorite series. This book is about a teenager,

Zoey Redbird. She was having an average day at school until a marker pointed her out and marked her as a vampyre in the middle of her old high school. She got her mark, but it was not the same mark as the regular vampyres; her cresant moon mark was filled in, which only adult vampyres have. This does not help her fit in at her new school, The House of Night. Let's not forget, every vampyre has one special power, right? She has five. She has also attracted the attention of a fallen immortal, but she would rather have the attention of another guy. There's sooo much going on in this book, I can not explain it all. Go read it, it's worth it.

Band/Artist of the Month: BMTH

Like (1) | Dislike (0)
Genre: Metal / Screamo / Hardcore
Chosen By: Jesika

Bring Me The Horizon has got to be one of the best British bands ever. They are one of my favorite bands. They have some amazing music. They are a band that is crazy whenever you see them. They have had a Wall of Death at one of their concerts. You know how crazy that is? It's insane. Of course, they also have softer songs that still

sound great. The lead singer, Oli Sykes, has so many tattoos. Besides Oli's tattoos, he has a harsh voice which just brings the band all together. It makes the vocals that he screams sound awesome. This is band I will have to see live one day. If you're into metal, you should go listen to them. Stop procrastinating.

Food/Drink of the Month: Lifewater

Chosen By: Tina

Omg. I've been drinking Sobe Lifewater like crazy! And for good reason too! It's just amazing! And it's supposed to be good for you. :3 There are lots of flavors, to choose from. My favorites are black and bluberry, acai fruit punch, yumberry pomegrante, strawberry kiwi, and pomegrante cherry. If you haven't tried Lifewater yet, then I suggest you get a bottle now.

Game of the Month: Call of Duty: Black Ops

Chosen By: Jesika

A lot of people do not like Black Ops, but I personally think it is a great game. Of course there is room for improvement, but it is the same with every game! The campaign in Black Ops is simply amazing. It is very interesting with several twist. The multiplayer has a few good maps, like Firing Range, Nuketown, and my favorite, WMD. You can prestige up to 15 times. You can prestige by reaching level 50. Personally, Black Ops is a great game ^^'. Call of Duty: Modern

Warfare 3 will becoming out soon. I'm looking forward to it.

Manga of the Month: Vampire Knight

Like (0) | Dislike (0)
Chosen By: Jesika

Vampire Knight is a manga that I have followed from the beginning. It has suprises in every chapter, the drama never ends. The main character, Yuki, is the guardian for the Cross Academy. Her job is to keep away the Day Class from the Night Class, who just happen to be vampires...There is her handy dandy helper, Zero. And of course in the Night Class there someone Yuki has a little crush on, Kaname, that might just be a tad deadly. Want to know more about the

manga? Well go read it! I don't want to spoil it :3.

Misc of the Month: Pandora Radio

Like (0) | Dislike (0)
Chosen By: Tina

Pandora Radio is the best internet radio ever! Especially if you have it on your iTouch or iPohone. Pandora finds songs you like based off of what artists/bands you search for. For example, when I search "Lacuna Coil" it plays Lacuna Coil but it also plays Evanescence, Within Temptation, Nightwish, Sirenia, Apocalyptica and so much more. It pulls songs simiiar to the ones you search and it's a great way to

discover new music. I absolutely love Pandora Radio and I think everyone should try it out.

Title: Durarara!!
Writer: Ryohgo Narita
Illustrator: Suzuhito Yasuda
Genre: Action / Super Natural / Comedy
Rating: PG-13
Reason: Durarara!! is by far one of the best things I have ever watched. It's officially on my favorites list. I adore just about all the characters, the storyline is amazing and it keeps you on your toes. The story follows the life of a boy named Mikado Ryugamine who has just moved to Ikebukuro, Tokyo. He attends Raira Academy with his long time best friend, Kasaomi Kida. The two quickly befriend a girl named Anri Sonohara, who is in the same class as Mikado. While the three seem to be normal students, there are some secrets none of them are willing to share with the friends, all of which are later revealed towards the end of the series, ending off with a pretty epic ending. Other characters such as Celty Sturluson, Shinra Kishitani, Izaya Orihara, and Shizuo Heiwajima also play a major part of the plot. Especially Izaya and Celty, as Izaya is the root of all evil(in my opinion) and Celty is the savior of the innocent. When you're done with the series you'll be begging for a second season of it. I know I was, and honestly, I still am. Unfortunately a second season doesn't seem to be in our future just yet, but who knows. Maybe with enough demanding fans, there will be another season.

Title: A Curse as Dark as Gold
Author: Elizabeth C. Bunce
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: 12+
Reason: I've always been interested in retold fairy tales, and this one is one of the most elaborate ones I've ever seen. A Curse as Dark as Gold is based off the tale of Rumpelstiltskin, a fairy tale that has its origins in Germany. In this retelling, though, the girl does not get married to the king; Charlotte Miller's father dies, leaving her and her sister to (wo)man the old mill that's been in their family for as long as the town has been around. Stirwaters Mill has a peculiar curse on it, though: None of the male children of the current family have lived. The mill has been passed down from father, to uncle, to brother, to nephew, but never from father to son. Charlotte must find a way to keep the mill from being repossessed by the bank - her father took out a £2,000 mortgage, and she's nowhere close to paying it. Enter Jack Spinner, a mysterious figure that her sister summons in the middle of the night. He offers to reverse their fortune: He's served generations of Millers, but at a price. Can Charlotte figure out a way to keep her Mill - and keep her family safe from the curse that's dogged generations of Millers - before it's too late?
Rated 12+ for some suggestive content and very mild language.

Title: Alice: Madness Returns
Platform: PC / Xbox 360
Genre: Action / Adventure
Rating: M
Reason: Alice: Madness Returns is a sequel to American McGee's Alice. In Alice, there are some very unique weapons. Only Alice uses a pepper grinder as a weapon. Alice is a girl who was released from a insane asylum after her family died in a fire. She goes to this twisted version of Wonderland to escape reality. What I love about this game is that Alice has different dresses for every level. Switching up outfits in games is something I like to see. Alice is a fun game with a very unique twist on Wonderland.
If you do not like gory games, do not play this, there are a couple sicking scenes.

Title: The World Ends With You
Platform: Nintendo DS
Genre: Role-Playing Game (RPG)
Rating: Teen
Reason: The World Ends With You is the strangest, most heart-wrenching story you'll ever read -- wait, what? It's not a story? It's a game? Even better. You play through this story. It all starts when Neku Sakuraba, a teenage boy who has serious social issues, wakes up in the middle of Shibuya (a district in downtown Tokyo). He gets a message on his phone, telling him he's now in a game. He's playing for his life. He manages to make a "pact" (essentially, a partnership) with a girl named Shiki. He dubs her "Stalker" because she doesn't stop following him. Over the course of the seven-day game, Neku and Shiki must complete tasks in a certain amount of time - or forfeit their right to exist. Just when you think you've got everything figured out, the game throws something completely new at you. And I haven't even mentioned the fighting system. It takes place in real time. You fight with one character on the top screen (your partner; in this case, Shiki) using the control pad; you fight with Neku on the bottom screen using the stylus. You equip Neku with different pins that have "psychs;" they allow Neku to summon fire, falling boulders, swords, etc. There are over 200 of these pins to collect. If the two-screen battles are too much for you, you can have the computer take control of the top screen for you. Trends rule Shibuya (you have to wear the right items to get an attack or defense boost), monsters known as the Noise dwell within the shadowy recesses of peoples' minds, and Neku and Shiki might not make it out of the game alive. It all wraps up into one fantastic story that nobody with a DS should miss. Don't let the battle system scare you away! The writing is excellent; I would love to see an anime or a full-length manga based on this one. The story will bring you to tears the first time you finish. Now that I've had my rant, I'll leave you with the rating.
Rated T for Teen because of suggestive themes, strong language, and mega-violence.

Title: Ludwig Kakumei
Author: Kaori Yuki
Illustrator: Kaori Yuki
Genre: Comedy / Drama / Fantasy / Horror / Romance
Rating: PG-16
Demographic: Shojo
Reason: Ah, fairy tales. We all know the familiar stories - Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Rapunzel. But what if they were completely different from their Disney or Grimm Brothers incarnations? That's what Ludwig Kakumei tries to convey. Ludwig is a prince who has been thrown out of his kingdom for keeping beautiful women's corpses in glass boxes in his secret room. (Le gasp!) His father orders him not to return without a bride...and hilarity ensues. When he sends his servant, Wilhem, out to find princesses for him to pursue, he also asks that Will get the girl's measurements. (Ludwig has a...fetish, if you can't tell.) He finds characters from every corner of the universe - from Dorothea (a witch who's in love with Ludwig) to Friederike (Sleeping Beauty) to Lisette (Red Riding Hood turned assassin) - and proceeds to try to woo the ones that he finds. With assassins hunting his every move and the prince trying to find "the" girl so he can return to his kingdom, Ludwig Kakumei is a fantastic story. There's love, loss, betrayal, and murder. The art is beautiful - although the prince looks like a man-lady (gorgeous enough to be a woman, yet he's entirely male), and the story is engaging. It's a little short at about sixteen chapters, but it's worth reading.
Rated PG-16 for strong suggestive themes.

Title: Stardust
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: PG-13
Reason: Yet another fantasy/fairy tale setting for Kitty to recommend this issue! Stardust is a fantastic story set in England in about...the 1800s, I would say. Late 1800s. It is set in a village named "Wall," appropriate since there's a gigantic wall next to the village. It keeps people out of the magic kingdom next door. One night, a young man crosses the wall despite the gatekeeper trying to keep him out. He meets a princess in the magic kingdom, then returns to his home. Nine months later, a baby is delivered to the young man's house. Eighteen years later, the baby Tristan has grown into a young man much like his father, and he embarks on a journey to find a falling star to impress the love of his life. There's more than one person looking for the star, though. A trio of witches want the star's heart so they can become young again. A dark prince, Septimus (who looks remarkably like a very young Severus Snape), is after the star to become immortal. Tristan gets there first and finds out that the star is actually a young lady. He tries to get her back to Wall as a present for his love (who doesn't return the feelings), but trials ensue, including a troupe of sky-pirates, a traveling witch, a lost princess, ghost princes, and...betrayal! *cue lightening flash* It's a beautiful love story. Once you see it, you'll want to watch it again, immediately.
Rated PG-13 for...what, exactly? Almost non-existent suggestive themes? I'm not sure. There's no language. There's violence. Yay, violence! Oh, and blue blood. Not red. Blue.

Title: The Nightmare Before Christmas
Genre: Stop Motion Animation / Fantasy / Children
Rating: PG
Reason: The Nightmare Before Christmas is a masterpiece. There are details in every little piece. This movie is about a town, Halloween Town. Halloween Town has an idol: Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King! Well, when the Pumpkin King discovers Christmas, he decides he should handle Christmas this year instead of Sandy Claws. Not Santa Claus, Sandy Claws. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a great movie that is good for Halloween or Christmas.

My Little Pony Season 2!

Written by Tina

It's finally coming! The day Bronies all over the world have been waiting for! The second season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic! 8D OMGHHKP! I cannot wait! When the new season will air is still unknown, but some are saying September while others are saying December of this year. Whatever the case, though, Bronies will be going crazy over it. Myself included. The new season is rumored to have more appearances of Princess Luna since she's returned to

Canterlot to live with her sister. Many fans are excited about this, especially those who are affiliated with The New Lunar Republic, such as myself. Luna was only seen at the end of the second episode in season one, while her sister Celestia was seen numerous times throughout the series. With the new season, we are hopeful that she will make some appearances of which will be memorable.

The plot for the new season is still unknown. In the first season the main goal was to first, save all of Equestria from the wrath of Nightmare Moon. After that was successfully done, all following episodes lead up to the six main ponies plus a dragon, going to the Grand Galloping Gala to have the best night of their lives. No one knows if there will be another gala to attend or any other high ranking event in which the Princesses are required to attend, though it is highly likely that there will be something of the sort where Celestia and Luna will be there to wrap up the second season.

That being said, I am a fully excited for the new season and even more so for the new merchandise that will be released to go along with it. :3

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Again, I want to say thanks to Jesika and Kitty for being so supportive of TSE and helping me get stuff done. You guys are amazing! And I want to thank all of you for submitting and reading TSE! Now, if you read the shout box, you'll know that there is some old content up and sections completely bare of any. Well, this month we did... okay. Better than last month, but we still could have done better. I cannot stress enough on how important it is to get
submissions in one time. It puts both Kitty and I in a bind when we have to rush to get things done. So I beg of you, get your stuff turned in early! Dx The deadline for next month's issue is the 25th! So please don't turn stuff in late or force me and Jesika to write articles to fill up the newsletter.

Anyway! You'll notice that the Neo Gaming Tips section is gone. Sorry, Cat. DX That section may be replaced with new things from both Kitty and myself. I know what Kitty has planned, but no one knows what I have planned. xD So keep an eye out. :3

Oh! And I want to thank all of you for saying all those wonderful things about me on the appreciation page Cat put together. I really did love it and I'm working to save all the messages. ^^ So thank you so, so, so much! It meant a lot to me. c:

Now, go write your submissions for next month!

MANAGING EDITOR
So here we are with the grand distribution of The Scarlet Issue #2! I'm so proud of you guys for keeping this thing alive. It's working out splendidly! I loved reading all of the articles and recommendations for the last issue; can't wait to see what you guys have submitted this time!

So you'll notice that I've been absent from the guild lately. There's a very large, very important reason for that.

It's probably the same with most of you: SCHOOL. School is claiming all of my free time. I'm a senior this year, and I've got three AP classes that are draining me dry. Every night, there's at least a whole hour full of homework, and then something to read and outline. Most days, I come home, do homework, eat dinner, then collapse in front of the TV, too tired to move or lift a finger. Not to mention my extracurricular activities.

My brain's fizzling out now. I've edited pages, created recommendations, and sniffed out grammatical errors for a while. I've got to get some sleep. Later, guys!

I look forward to putting together the next issue (hopefully with some more submissions!) as well!

~Kitty
