Dark Arts: The Introduction
So, you've decided to come into my class? I'm shocked, because not too many students in Sneakoscope seem interested in Dark Arts, but I guess,
everyone wants to learn about it sooner or later. I'm Professor Kathy, actually, Kathy's fine. =) Otherwise known as _sugar_rox_. This class will explain from the various types of spells, to creatures, and even artifacts and dark locations. Now, before you take my class, there are a few rules you should know:
1) All homework should include:
your username, and your house And (this is a no brainer) the answers to the homework, but of course, if you don't send in the answers, I won't chase you for them. It'll just be a waste of your time. =) If you forget to include your house, I'll take off 10 house points, because I'm not your mother, I'm not going to hunt you down and find out what you are.
2) Try to spell and use grammar correctly. I'm not saying it has to be
perfect, but somewhere near there. ^^ If you forget a letter or two, I won't deduct house points, but if you make out total gibberish like "me no lyk u" then you'll only get 25% of the house points. Just because you made me decipher your large piece of a mess. =)
3) Don't include the questions, just the answers is fine. =)
4)The lessons will be posted here every week, the day after the due date for the previous lesson. All your answers can be found there, but
no word for word. If you are doing this, and I find out, there will be a major deduction of house points. Sometimes, you might have to go looking for your own answers, since I won't be posting
every detail on here.
I've pretty much told you my main rules, and explained them. so, if you fail to abide by these rules, you'll know what happens.
Dark Arts: The Lesson
Did we all do our homework last week? I hope so. Or most of this won't make sense.... well actually, maybe it will. If you're smart enough, I don't know about you Hufflepuffs though. -glares- As we've said in the previous class, Dark Art spells, are most commonly known as
curses. But
what would be considered dark arts? It's more than magic, it's magic that involves interfering with the will of another person, or which kills another person. That's important, remember that. Everybody better get that question right. Voldemort, don't get all -gasp- on me now. It's just a name. =) He spent
years trying to research a way to become immortal. Is this considered the Dark Arts? ... Right, it is. I'll just pretend you all said yes. Why? Because it interferes with the natural order of life. Whoops, there goes the time. Next week, we'll actually talk about the 3 unforgivable curses. Whooo, exciting eh? =0 Don't forget to do your homework!
Dark Arts: The Homework
Now that you've read the lesson. You can start right on the homework. Each lesson can only be worth a maximum of
20 points so, if extra credit is given, it will be within the 20 points. Usually, if the homework in total is worth less than 20 points, even with the bonus, and you decide to do the bonus, you'll end up getting 20 points anyways (if the answers are correct), even when the homework with the extra credit included, is only worth something less than 20. But, if you don't attempt to try the extra credit, your homework will be graded normally. Since extra credit will most likely be "on your own" kind of answers. It won't be found in the lesson. Confused about the marking? That's okay, you're not the one doing it anyways. ;P
Questions:
1) What would be considered as the Dark Arts? Name them both. (6 points, I told you to get it right)
2) True or False: Immortality is not a part of the Dart Arts. (1 points)
3) Who spent years trying to become immortal? (1 point)
4)Why was this considered a part of the Dark Arts? (4 points)
Extra Credit:
In the book, Dumbledore believes Petrification as "Dark Magic of the most advanced kind." What is the incantation for this? (1 point) And, why do you think he believes that? (7 points)
Dark Arts: The Previous Lessons
Lesson 2: Dark Arts Spells: Part 2
Due Date: Saturday, August 27th, 2005
Since we're on our second class, let's talk about the second most important thing, other than knowing just exactly
what the Dark Arts are. Well, what is the second most important thing?... What? You said money? No, that's
the most important thing. Anyways, it's spells, for those of you who didn't know. Now spells, are most of the time known as
curses in the Dark Arts. Now, these spells aren't just like any spells, they come out of the wand, like a muggle gun. The energy from it, causes physical damage to the person who it has been inflicted on. They are
not to be confused with hexes or jinxes, although, those can also harm a person. It just won't have as much damage as a curse will. Just because someone says these spells, does
not exactly mean it's Dark magic, what makes a difference between a harmful spell, and a curse, is the intention of the wand holder. Well, that's as much as we're going to get done today. =) More on this next week! See you then!
The Homework for Lesson 2:
1) What are spells known as in the Dark Arts? (1 point)
2) What is the name of the muggle weapon that is compared to a wand? (1 point)
3) What kind of damage does the engery from the wand cause to the inflicted? (verbal damage, emotional damage, etc...) (1 point)
4)What is the difference between harmful spells, and curses? (4 points)
5)True or False: A hex/jinx is just as powerful as a curse. (1 point)
6) Name a hex and a jinx. (2 points)
Extra Credit:
Name as many hexes and/or jinxes as you can, aside from those you have listed in question 6. (max of 10 points, 1 point for each)

Lesson 1: What
is the Dark Arts?
Due Date: Saturday, August 20th, 2005
Well, since we're just starting off this week, let's talk about just Dark Arts in general. What is it? Well, the Dark Arts are a different type of magic, depending on the wizard using it. Most magic is in between, or neutral I should say. A spell can be used for both good, or bad. Another kind of magic, is just evil, all the way through, this is the Dark Arts. Magic done through the Dark Arts are usually known as Curses, but we'll talk about those another time. To understand the difference between what is "acceptable" magic, and what is just plain "bad", students need to take a class known as Defence Against Dark Arts, or DADA for short.
The Homework for Lesson 1:
1) In your own words(but not too long words), what is the Dark Arts? (2 points)
2) What kind of magic is just evil in it's intention? (1 point)
3) What is magic done through the Dark Arts called? (1 point)
4)What are these "spells"
not to be confused with? Name them both. (2 points)
5)What is the abbreviation for Defence Against the Dark Arts? (1 point)
Extra Credit:
Name 5 neutral spells. (5 points)
