In November 2005, I found out that I had Type 1 Diabetes.
A month or two before I was diagnosed, I began to notice the usual symptoms: losing weight, the bad attitude, being thirsty, going to the bathroom all the time.
I lost about fifteen pounds in two to three weeks, and it was just insane. I had a terrible attitude, which was totally odd for me because I'm actually a nice person.
Especially being on the road around people all the time, you have to keep that positive energy going… and it was hard.
I took some time off from our tour to see a doctor, who packed me off to the hospital immediately when she heard my symptoms.
My blood sugar was over 700.
For someone who had no bad medical history ever to suddenly have the shock of diabetes was a bit overwhelming in itself, and then I had to learn all about it,learn all these things in such a short period of time. All of it was crazy.
I also wondered if I could continue making music, but I had the support of my friends and the band to be there with me. My dad was back at home with my three other brothers, but my mom stayed at the hospital with me every night.
In March 2007, almost a year and a half after my diagnosis, I publicly announced that I have diabetes at Carnival For a Cure. I knew I wanted to go public and that seemed like the right time. I guess I wanted to kind of get comfortable with my diabetes before telling the world about it.
I found it amazing just how many people know somebody with diabetes or have diabetes themselves. We'd get these stories about how some of the kids were really afraid to tell their friends and how my situation gave them courage to do that. The fact that I'm able to have somewhat of a spotlight to share my story, I just feel blessed.
I carry a supply of guitar picks in my pocket, and whenever I meet another diabetic buddy as I call them, I give them a pick, a cool little thing.
I appreciate that I have a platform to be able to share my story. I have this passion to be able to share with young people my age and be a positive light in a situation that might not be so positive. I've heard stories about kids who were in depression because after they got diagnosed they were just so upset about what was going on. That just touched my heart, and I wanted to be able to do something about it. I hope that I can be that positive light.
I know that Diabetes is a huge part of my life and I can't just forget about it, obviously. I have to keep taking care of it and managing it, and learning more things about it. Hopefully one day they'll come up with some type of cure, and I hope I'll be one of the first to know about it.
To anyone out there who has been diagnosed, don't let it slow you down at all. I made a promise to myself on the way to the hospital that I wouldn't let this thing slow me down and I'd just keep moving forward, and that's what I did. Just keep a positive attitude and keep moving forward with it. Don't be discouraged.
(Hello Beautiful plays in the background)
Nick: Something real quick... How many of you people out there, all you kids, have diabetes? Raise your hand... I see a couple of you guys out there... Let me see those hands, put them up...
(Nick raises his hand)
Nick: A little over a year ago, we were on the road touring… giving the school tours, as some of you might know... and... yeah pretty cool time... some crazy stuff started to happening where I started losing weight... I started drinking a lot of water all the time, and just having a really bad attitude. It wasn't me. My parents brought me to a doctor and I found out that I had diabetes.Type 1... and my blood sugar was over 700. For those of you who don't know, normal is anywhere between 70 and 120... and finding out was crazy because I really had no idea what it was... and first thing I asked was 'Am I gonna die?' and the doctor said 'No, you'll be fine, but you'll have to go to the hospital for a couple of days.' So, I went to the hospital and we went through like extensive training on what diabetes was,and how to manage it, and take care of it, and all that stuff. It was crazy... crazy time... so I started, I started learning how to manage it, started going on tour. It was The Veronicas tour... we were on the bus and we were touring and I was taking shots at the time, check my sugar twelve times a day and it was getting really hard to do the shots and to manage all that, but then I heard about this new product they were coming out with called the OmniPod... and the OmniPod changed my life. I found about it and started using it a couple months later and its just a little... wait I'll show you real quick...
(Nick takes off left side of jacket and lifts his left sleeve to reveal OmniPod)
It's that right there... it's just a little that I wear that controls my blood sugar and helps me stay great so I can be here for you today and without it, you know, I don't know where I would be, but... yeah... it was crazy. As some of you know during that time, I probably lifted a little more then… but I lost 15 pounds in two weeks... crazy and I only weighed 115 pounds so it was not cool... but, you know, my brothers were there for me throughout the whole time, my parents... and all you guys were there. So thank you... and actually the day after I got out of the hospital we had a show in Montclaire, New Jersey is where we played... and that was the day after so it was after that. The day I got diagnosed, I decided I wasn't gonna let it slow me down... and I know all of you guys out there who have diabetes... I see all you guys... you know, you all have your own story. Everyone here has their own story about what went down and how you manage it and all that, but I'm just so blessed to share mine with you today...and ... yeah... so I want to encourage all of you guys just to... be positive about it. You know at the beginning I was asking myself 'Why me?' and then I started asking 'Why not me?'... I could be here today telling you guys that through all that, I made it through and I'm here today singing and having fun... and to just encourage you to keep it positive. We have the need sometime to not have it positive just because we told other people and they found out and they said that I always got a smile on my face about it. So when you're disappointed and you're like 'Why do I have diabetes? Why is this happening?', just remember that there's always an opportunity for you to make someone smile... and we just want to thank the Diabetes Research Institute for having us here today, to play for you guys... and for those of you who were there the past two days at the shows... and thank you guys... thanking everyone. You guys are amazing, we love you so much.
Joe: (in background) Thank You...
(The Jonas Brothers perform Time For Me To Fly)
You might know the song A Little Bit Longer.
I wrote it on one of those days when my blood sugar was a little out of control and I was kind of bumming I walked by this room we were staying at, and it was so weird – all of a sudden there was this big ballroom with a piano in it. So I went in there, sat down at the piano and wrote the song. Here are the lyrics I wrote that day...
Kevin adds, Nick sings this song every night and it brings people to tears. It's amazing. The song has even brought the brothers to tears...
On the first night of their Burning Up tour, Nick and his brothers performed the song for a sold-out crowd for the first time in Canada. Nick was crying for most of the song. When Joe and Kevin joined Nick onstage with their guitars, Joe began to cry. Finally, right near the end of the song, Nick had to stop in the middle of the ending and he laid his head on the piano to cry.
Not only does A Little Bit Longer affect all the fans, it even affects them.
Part of the Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream series, the episode titled Nothing's Gonna Slow Me Down aired on August 8, 2008 on Disney Channel. This episode was also featured at all concerts for the sold-out Burnin' Up summer tour.
On November 5, 2008 (after the airing of this episode), Disney Channel released a public service announcement from Nick Jonas about Type 1 diabetes and how November was known as Diabetes Awareness Month.
Nick J Day is celebrated on March 11th.
During the two year anniversary of this event, Many fansites and magazine websites (like Tiger Beat/Bop) took notice and showed their appreciation and gratitude for Nick's efforts toward the cause.
Jonas Brothers are off the chain! Guild was one of those fansites…
On June 23, 2009… Nick and 100 kids from across the nation and foreign countries gathered at the Capitol to address the Senate to help push the continuation of the Special Diabetes Program, which helps fund research for new medicines and therapies that can help treat or cure Type 1 Diabetes. He was also joined by two other celebrities: Sugar Ray Leonard and Mary Tyler Moore.
