This newspaper began as just an idea I had, which I put to the SoLiDers. We decided it would be fun to try, and started putting plans into place. Soon, I picked up the two staff members - Hazel and Sarah. Unfortunately, neither of their work can be found in this issue, but I hope that they will be part of issue two.
December is the month of Christmas, so you will find a recipe for a 'Christmas Cracker' themed slushie. Birgitte has also written us a recipe for a delicious cake, feel free to send in any photos to us! We are primarily a newspaper, so you will find all of the news from Neopets in general, the Lost Desert and the world of Yooyuball included in each issue. We will also be bringing you the winners of various competitions inside SoLiD with each issue, the Game Challenge, the SoLiD Conundrum, the Mystery Picture and the Keyquest Tournament. Other features included are an interview with Lost Desert Captain, Leera Heggle, and a Caption Competition.
However much I enjoyed putting together this issue, we can't do it by ourselves. We need your submissions to help expand our newspaper. If you are interested in helping in a more permanent basis, you will need to think of some ideas for features. When you have thought of something, please neomail fionnthegreat9. If you want to help, but don't want to commit yourself to anything, please look at this page.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed making it!

Sahkmet's Biggest Bank, The Bank of Sakhmet has announced a 5% increase in profits in October.
Users of this iconic bank will be glad to know that the bank's profits have grown from 39.4 million neopoints in September to 41.4 million neopoints in October. The bank's President, Iada Acara, put this rise mainly down to Princess Vyassa's statement that she would 'only ever use her national bank', which led to a massive increase in users of the bank. This is good news for the bank, who had a 3% decrease in profits from August in September. It has not been a good year for the bank; their quarterly profits dropped by 4%. But all of the bank's loyal staff and customers will be relieved that things are finally starting to look up. |

Daphnal's Delicatessen to open in Qasala
Daphnal, the shop's owner, is hoping that it will add a new slant to this historic city's food. At the moment, the only place to buy food in Qasala is the Qasalan Delights, a large tent in the City Centre, selling sand foods, burnt food and anything looking vaguely edible is probably cursed. The delicatessen will provide high quality deli food, with a desert twist, including new, never seen before flavours. These flavours, as well as pricing are expected to be revealed on the 8th Day of Celebrating. However, the delicatessen is expected to face competition. Lots of people will want to stick by Qasalan Delights, especially the undead population. But lots of Sahkmet citizens, in a recent poll said that they are unsatisfied with the food offered in Sahkmet. The delicatessen is due to open early next year. |
How successful will the new food be? |

Eulonu Usul makes stage debut
After five years of being a presenter on breakfast TV show Good Morning, Sahkmet, Eulonu will make her stage debut in the thriller 'The Ghost of Coltzan'. The 32 year old Usul stars as Princess Vyassa in this representation of the king's tragic death. The show will, rather fittingly, be performed in the Coltzan III theatre. The first performance will be on the 12th Day of Celebrating. Eulonu tells the Desert Times that she has been looking to get into theatre for a long time. 'Presenting is all very well.' She tells us. 'But it gets boring after a while. I was looking for a new opportunity, and here it is!' Eulonu studied Theatre at the University of Qasala before becoming a presenter at the age of 23. |

Wild Mauket now extinct in Lost Desert
The last wild Mauket turned domestic today, according to scientists. The Sahkmet Nature Reseach Society (SNRS) said that this was 'unsurprising'. Wild Mauket sightings have been declining for years, mainly due to the better life offered to the domestic Mauket. In 2005, sightings were around 300. This year, there have only been about 20, and the last tracked Mauket is reported to have ventured into the city of Sahkmet today. Scientists are worried about this apparent lack of provision for petpets in the wild. "It will be very sad if all of the petpets become domestic." One tells us. "We could lose a large part of nature, and it could disrupt the natural ecosystems and cycles. We must work to ensure that the wild petpets are not affected by the domestification of the desert." |

Junior Yooyuball Tournament kicks off today
The Junior Yooyuball Tournament, the biggest junior sports event in Neopia starts today in Mystery Island. Today is just the opening ceremony, a traditional event that over 5,000 neopians have bought tickets for. The first match will be played on the 3rd Day of Celebrating between Brightvale and Krawk Island. This will be the 5th Annual Junior Yooyuball Tournament. Last year, the Haunted Woods won the tournament hosted in Altador. There will be 8 teams competing in this tournament:

Smaller goals to be introduced?
The goalposts have been the same size since Y3, before the Altador Cup was even introduced. But following complaints from supporters that it is too easy to score a goal, and the players' true abilities are not showcased, the committee have been in discussion about increasing the size of goals. At the moment, the standard size for most major tournaments, including the Altador Cup, is 3m. New regulations could see these decreased to 2m. Terror Mountain's Minister for Yooyuball, Chakor Chomby, told the Desert Times: "We [the Neopian Yooyuball Committee] are constantly looking for ways to make Yooyuball more exciting for the players and spectators. In the past, we have been hesitant to make any major changes, in case we upset the fans, but now we see that this is what they want, and we will be discussing the matter in depth." We have been told that we can expect a verdict sometime in February. |

Out of this World tournament concludes.
The aptly named Out of this World tournament is an annual tournament between the two space lands, Virtupets and Kreludor. Every year, each land sends their four best teams to compete against each other in a gripping tournament, broadcast to everyone in both lands. It is said to be one of the most exciting tournaments in Neopia, due to the fact that it is played in a low gravity stadium, unlike the one that most teams would train in. It concluded after a month on the 28th November, the standings were as follows: First: Kreludor - Meteor Masters

Interview
By fionnthegreat9
Today, I will be interviewing the tireless Leera Heggle. Lost Desert Captain and goalkeeper, there are many that say Mr Heggle is one of the most valuable Yooyuball players the world has ever seen.Thank you for being here, Mr Heggle.
It's my pleasure to be here.
Does it ever get tiring, with the fans and the press?
It does, from time to time. Sometimes, all that I want to do is get on with training for Yooyuball and then collapse at the end of a long day, and I really don't have time for the press. However, it gives me so much joy to see everyone so inspired by Yooyuball, as long as the fans are happy, I'm happy.
In 2008, you were chosen as the runner-up MVP and the goalkeeper of the all-Neopia first team. How do you feel when you receive awards like these?
When I am recognised in this way, I can't tell you how happy it makes me. It is a lot of hard work, being a Yooyuball player, and when you receive praise for your work, it makes it all seem worth it.
Lost Desert did not do particularly well in the last cup, why do you think this was?
We had a bad year, all teams have them from time to time. We are still grateful to all of the fans for supporting us whatever, and are working our hardest to make sure that we will be back in our stride next year.
Thank you for your time.

To contribute to the Desert Times, we do not ask that you are a member of SoLiD, or even Lost Desert. Anyone can contribute, but there are some guidelines:
- All submissions must be either general Neopets related, Yooyuball related or Lost Desert related.
- If you are not a member of SoLiD, please do not submit anything that requires entries (e.g. puzzles). If you are a member of SoLiD, and would like to submit something like this, neomail fionnthegreat9 first. I may ask that you let me handle entries for whatever you have come up with, but if I know you well enough, I will let you handle them yourself.
- Please think of things that might be in a newspaper. We have a very broad range at the Desert Times, but we don't want it to turn into a magazine.
- Please don't copy things already in the newspaper.
- Be original and creative!
Thanks, any submissions are much appreciated!
I would also really like a proof reader for each issue, who will read through each issue just before it is released, checking for spelling and grammar mistakes, broken links, or anything else like that. Preferably from Lost Desert, though I would be happy for anyone to do this as long as they are willing to be committed and thorough. If you are interested, please contact Fifi.
