In the Editorial in Issue 210, Donna revealed that the cellblock avatar is NOT random -- it's merely the fact that NO ONE has figured out how to get it yet. I'd like to devote this part of my Game Avatar Guide to breaking the true mystery!

Do YOU have a theory? Feel free to neomail waldhornist! She is also looking for screenshots of the moment people got the avatar to try and devise what the strategy is to getting that avatar! She is ALSO looking for the date of the win, the time of game beginning and the time of game completion for avatar-winning games.

Hints:
  • As our favourite Cellblock Strategy was taken down, I decided to re-create it. If this is your strategy, please contact me so I can give you the credit you deserve for making our lives so much easier! waldhornist created the screenshot for us.
  • Also, keep an eye on where your opponent moves. You never know just when he will block your path. This strategy is nice as it is easily adaptable for any occasion, as there are so many possibilities for winning once you understand it fully.
  • After Tournament 11, begin by creating a diamond pattern where you will have the most room to complete the strategy above. (In other words, follow the strategy as above, but instead of starting with (1), begin by placing the two pieces located in the red box, and continue strategy from there. You MAY have to move your starting square depending on where the rocks are placed) This won't always work, but often does. (waldhornist)

What did Cellblock avatar players have to say about their wins?

  • Rumor for cellblock is that one of your pieces has to be touching the opponent's when he beats you. (soccerstar712)
  • Here's how I thought it worked. (See second losing screenie) Put pieces in order of numbers as I did, then block one of his pieces. When he has 3, put your 5th piece in the corner I didn't put a number for. Then he wins, and you might get the avatar. (soccerstar712)
  • I think the key is to keep playing after you limit. (sexyleogirl22) **Not all of these screenshots had been taken after the limit had been reached.
  • Maybe it has nothing to do with the placement of pieces, MAYBE it's a timed thing. As in you have to finish a game in X amount of time, OR maybe finish the game at exactly X amount of time OR maybe it's similiar to the Turmy avatar and it's only given at a particular time. I really don't know, but you might want folks to start sending in the NST time they played the game. (lordhairso)
  • I have a theory, although I have no proof of it working or not, but maybe you need to win/lose at a special time to get the avatar...it may be wrong, but it just crossed my mind. (cosmokids)
  • It could have to do with how many neopoints you had made so far in the game, like where you are in relation to your daily limit of 5,000np. (sweetpea2262)
  • It's not a theory, but it's another element: None of the winning screenshots are on the last match against each opponent. Maybe the match you're on in each opponent has something to do with it. (sweetpea2262)
  • Total number of wins or losses in a row, whatever the level or tournament or adversary... example, wins 6 or 7 in a row ... (belu_fille)
  • I tried losing 8 in a row ... nothing ...Actually, it seems to never happen early in tournament (like tournament 1 or 2) and number of game/tournament is different for each people ...So, different possibility: 1- Total amount of games played 2- Total amount of games played against someone 3- as high score tables keep number of points ... a total of points ... but that does not make sense as lost should not give the avy ...So, as people win/lost different number of games before reaching the next round and tournement, it does make sense that anyone is getting the avy at the same time ... and also makes sense that no one ever find how they get it ... as no one keep the exact amount of games since the beginning they do play cell blocks ... duh ! (belu_fille)
  • I think the trick is not in the pattern or is a combination of the pattern with something else. (dalidance)
  • I started playing today vs Haskol in level 7 tournament 7 and I won without losing against anyone until I got the avatar. I don't remember how many wins I had yesterday but maybe you get the avatar having x number of wins or losses in a row. (jujavaes)
  • After I found a strategy, I used the same strategy to win over and over unless the essential piece of the board was blocked, at which point I usually lost. (But not always.) During that particular match, such was the case. So I don't know if a change in strategy makes it work. (I doubt that- it sounds complicated to set up.) (torkie10)
  • I played against vex on tourney 16 and lost so I rechallenged him and decided I would try and recreate what I saw in your screenshots. The first 1 I tried to recreate one I got nothing, then I tried one farther down, and low and behold I got the avatar. (xaviernye)
  • I got the avatar at about 12:30pm NST. I have a few theories about getting the avatar though... There isn't any coding in the page that seems to dictate whether you get it or not, so it isn't pre-decided whether you're going to get it or not, I don't think. Maybe it could have something to do with a complicated equation about the number of characters in your username/active pet? (firestorm205)
  • The game was won around 5:25am NST. I won this avatar while beating Vex himself. I think the avatar might have something to do with the fact that I purposely lost 4 games during Level 7 with Haskol. (featherwingedangel)

Unravelling the Mystery

By scrutinizing the the screenshots and the player comments, can we deduce the REAL method for winning the avatar?

FACTS:

  • Players have gotten the avatar by:
    • winning OR losing OR by having a draw.
    • winning diagonally, vertically and horizontally.
    • with as few as 5 moves and with games containing over 20 moves.
    • having pieces touching the edges and corners, and by not having pieces touching the edges.
    • as early as Tournament 6, Level 7, Match 1 of 9.
    • winning OR losing before or after maximum games per day have been played.
  • With all these facts in mind, we can deduce:
