Chapter One, The Drifter

It was a cool, crisp day. Autumn had just begun and a light breeze blew through the sails of our ship, The Drifter. I continued the morning chore of hanging the laundry up to dry, while Nagi flew around the ship as he always does. I couldn't have known it then but that was the morning when all that I knew would change. For better or worse I still am not sure.

It wasn't until all of the laundry was hung that I noticed the sky. I realized that this cool autumn would soon turn into a nightmare. "Nagi go into the cabin! A hurricane is coming!" I yelled with all that was in me. I have been sailing for as long as I can remember but hurricanes have always stuck fear in my heart. I quickly repacked the laundry that I had just hung into a wicker basket and ran to the ships cabin to put it away.

For the remainder of the morning I tried to make sure that everything would be in the cabin for when the storm arrived. Even taking all of these precautions, however, I knew could not guarantee our safety. Hurricanes are famous for being unpredictable and one could never tell just what would happen when a storm hit.
