Welcome to my rough and ready guide to The Great Desert Race.

The game itself is very simple and I have added screenies to help you understand and see the various screens.

Board

Firstly, here's the Board. It appears to be the same each time you start.

Basically everything you need to do (roll dice, select player) and everything that happens will appear on the scroll.

Neopoints/Map/Food

When you land on a Neopoint, Food and the Map square, you just pick up said item.

The Ummagine allows you pass the thief without loss of turn, any food allows you to pass the Mummy without moving back 2 spaces and the map allows you to walk though Suteks Tomb without going back to the start.

The items appear to have no np value and no impact on your winnings.

When you land on the Neopoint bag (see Board for np awarded) square, you see a scroll saying:

When you land on the map square, you see a scroll saying:

When you land on a Food square, you see a scroll saying either:

Vortex

The vortex squares move you. If it's one of the two Votex lines, you move along it to square just past the end. You gain 5np for the squares moved in vortex.

If it's the single one, near the end, you lose 60np and move back to this square:

This is what the characters look like in a vortex:

Quicksand

The scroll explains it well: ;)

Suteks Tomb

Once used, the map piece disappears.

If the character has picked up the map piece:

If the character hasn't picked up the map piece (you lose all your character's np):

Coltzans Shrine

When you land on this square, this scroll appears:

and the outcome is random:

Tug-O-War

Pick a winner when you land on the Tug-O-War square:

If you win: (roll 4-6 on the dice)

If you lose: (roll 1-3 on the dice)

Thief

Depends if you picked up the Ummagine:

Sand

Most of the sand pile will cause your character to slip back 2 spaces. It is best to avoid moving on the sand if you roll a 1-2 otherwise you'll lose 2np for the slipping and lose np overall for your total and winnings.

The pile seems to have 7 spaces under it but as long as you move 6 from the square before it, you won't slip back.

This is what they look like when slipping:

Scamander

The Scamander moves random squares on each dice roll.

This square is another game of chance. First pick an exit on the scroll:

And you either win (spaces don't count towards np total):

Or if you lose

Mummy

The mummy is similar..
If you have food:

If you don't have food (will lose 2np):

Finish

Finishing appears to be a 25np, for each character, addition to your np award and your np prize seems to be determined by your two characters two NP totals.

There doesn't appear to be an addition reward for finishing first.

This total includes the np winnings and each square moved (including vortex "free" moves).

But you will get the one of the following screens when you finish:

You have to get the exact amount of squares to move to the finish on the dice, else you'll get:

and will lose that turn.

High Scores

The high scores shown will be from going around the Board many times and here are some tips on doing so:

* Finishing first may be a boon as you can no longer play on no score more np for finishing first and you make 25np for finishing no matter when. Once Player 2 has finished, the "lose turns" don't count and save time.

* Land on the single Vortex square as this sends you back before Tug-O-War and try to play each time as can win 100np. Please note you lose 60np for going back.

* Try to avoid numbers of 1-2 on the sand pile as you slip back 2 spaces and lose 2np and thus lose np.

Please note: the game had several changes made in July so I assume the high scores should drop from above 9,000 from August

Misc.

Each character seem to have their own little moves:

Brucey B – he will get out a coin and kiss or rubs head with handkerchief

Tomos – wiggles his tail and pushes his shirt collar/scratches his breast.

Nabile – folds her arms. Puts hand on her hip.

Osiri - lifts her skirt to walk. She may fluff her hair. Her ears and tail will twitch.
