Raiders of Maraqua Guide
So, you want an avatar? Hopefully this guide will get you there!

First, lets start with general guidelines:

  • The goal in each level is to get all of the major gems/treasures in the treasure chest.
  • You move around in each level by using the arrow keys and push bubbles/rocks/Treausre by pressing the spacebar.
  • To get the avatar (get to 800 points), you will probably need to make it to the LAST level. You don't need to BEAT it though!
  • Get all the gems and gold you can, as they help, but are NOT enough to get you the avatar alone.
  • The avatar is more about persistence and a little luck and less about skill. If you want this avatar, it will be yours.
  • Sometimes you might need to restart a level because of bad placement of items (this is where luck comes in, a bit).
  • You get a bonus life by typing 1morekarpohplease, but this only works AFTER you lose one life.
  • If you die on a level, you keep the points you've earned so far (if you've already put one Treasure in, you keep the 5 points from that maneuver, but when the level restarts, you have to put it in again, earning you 5 more points).
  • Scoring just 400 game points earns you the maximum 1000 neopoints per play. (250np:100points)

Now for some specifics:

  • Your charater:

You play Karpoh the Koi, and are (as the instructions state) eager to impress your pirate bosses by collecting as much treasure as you can.
    This is Karpoh (you).
This is the treasure chest, your goal.

  • Treasures:

For each level, its often best to get all but the last one of these in the Treasure Chest before going after baddies. And just like the bubbles and rocks below, Baddies can push these also.
The Gold Piece. Its worth 5 points.
The Jewel (or Diamond). Also, worth 5 points.

  • Baddies:

Killing these guys gives you 5 points each. If you kill more than one with the same bubble you get more points (1st gives you 5, 2nd gives you 10, 3rd gives you 20).

If a Baddie pushes a bubble and kills another Baddie, you earn ONE point (I'm guessing the "stacking" works like above - if the bubble kills more than one, there's a multiplier, but I haven't seen this, so I'm not SURE).

The Slorg. They move at a moderate pace (a bit faster than Jetsams).
The Jetsam. This one is hatching. They move moderately also.
The Ghoti. The move quite a bit faster.
The Slugawoo. They move VERY slow, but can make new light blue bubbles. This can help you sometimes when the others have popped too many and make it hard to finish a level. It can also be a pain, sometimes.
Killing a baddie looks like this; 5 points for this kill.

  • The "Game Board":

If you and a baddie push a bubble at each other (like a "showdown"), the bubbles pass THROUGH each other and you both get hit (even if one is a rock). This is NOT a good idea!
These, most common bubbles, are pop-able. Also, Baddies hatch from them. Pushing them when there is blank space behind them makes them move, but if something is on the other side, pushing will pop them.

These don't pop (unless hit by a rock) and stop when they hit another item. Baddies can also hatch from them.

Rocks, when pushed, pop all bubbles (above kinds) until they hit something stationary, or a wall.

Shells are stationary. You've just got to work around them.

  • Bonus Gold:

Always get the goodies (Bonus Gold). While in some levels its best to do this first, in others its best to do the setup first. See below (individual levels)for more info.
    These are worth 5 points.

  • Bonus Bubbles (or Plus 10 Bubbles):

Bonus Bubbles are worth 5 times the level you're on. As the levels progress, these become more important. They're random though, after killing a Baddie, and here again, luck is important in getting the avatar.

They appear at the bottom of the Board and float bubble-like (pretty much in a straight line) up to the top of the screen. Once they move out of the screen, they're gone. They ALWAYS say 10 on them, even though they're worth different values, depending on the level you're playing.

It is possible to get more than one Bonus Bubble on the same level (confirmed by renrenthehamster - thanks).

I have gotten one at the end of level 3, and it was still floating up the screen as I began level 4, so they do carry over. However, I forgot to notice if I got 15 or 20 points from it. Ooops!

I got one on level 14 (70 points) and another on 19 (95 points) and that ensured the avatar for me.

  • Red Plus:

This gives you an extra life and will be saved if you already have four extra karpohs (unlike with the "cheat" mentioned above).

  • Key to symbols used in levels:
    • Red arrow: You need to push the bubble in a certain direction (indicated).
    • Red number: Its generally best to go in the order given, at least until you feel confident about the game.
    • Purple X: The item MUST stay in place, or you'll have to rearrange things to ensure there's an item in the same spot.
    • Red * (asterisk): A bubble you need to pop out of the way.

And, now that you're ready to practice: the levels!

Level 1

Treasures: 2
Maximum Baddies: 3 (after you kill three, you will not get any more points for individual kills, but its still possible to Bonus Bubbles)
Bonus Bubble Value: 5 points
Minumum Score: 25 points (without Bonus Bubbles or Bonus Gold)
Instructions: Move the dark bubble to the right, then push the first treasure in the Chest. Move bubbles 3, 4, and 5 out of the way as indicated and push the second treasure to the left. Kill some Baddies for points, perhaps get some Bonus Gold, a Bonus Bubble or a Bonus Life (if available), and go back and push that second treasure in the same way you pushed the first one in (you'll need to move the dark blue bubble out of the way first).

Level 2

Treasures: 2
Maximum Baddies: 3
Bonus Bubble Value: 10 points
Minumum Score: 25 points
Instructions: Move then pop bubble 1, then move behind the first Treasure to push it in. Push that light blue bubble to the right, then the dark one up so it will be there to "catch" your second Treasure (you're in trouble if the light blue one against the wall is missing). Pop the pair of light blue bubbles, then the one just off to the left. Get behind the second treasure, push it against the dark blue bubble you put in place, kill some Baddies, then put the biscuit in the basket to move on.

Level 3

Treasures: 2
Maximum Baddies: 5
Bonus Bubble Value: 15 points
Minumum Score: 35 points
Instructions: Pop bubble 1, push #2 to create a "block" for the second treasure. Then push 3, pop 4 and toss the Treasure in. Next pop the three bubbles by 6 so you can push for step 7. Push the Treausre next to the bubble you moved into place. Hopefully that hasn't turned into a Baddie. The most important reason to go reasonably "fast" with this level is that often a Baddie will push one of the two rocks flanking the "entry" to the treasure chest so that they're next to each other, and this makes it impossible to get treasure in. Otherwise, max out your points here, killing 5 Baddies - maybe even try to line some up for those extra points! ("Stacked" kills don't count beyond the maximum number of kills, so this is the first good level to try for it.)

Level 4

Treasures: 2
Maximum Baddies: There are no Baddies on this level.
Bonus Bubble Value: No Baddies mean no Bonuses. But this level is a great time to grab a snack, since you can't die! You won't have another chance for SEVERAL more levels.
Minumum Score: 10 points
Instructions: Move the first treasure, then the bubble. Push the Treasure at 3, then move around so you're behind it to push to the left for step 4. After getting that Treasure in, go back up and get the other one it. Pretty easy. The only thing to be wary of with this level is if a Gold Bonus ends up in your way and blocks moving the Treasures. Just scope it out before starting the level and you SHOULD be okay.

Level 5

Treasures: 2
Maximum Baddies: 5
Bonus Bubble Value: 25 points
Minumum Score: 35 points
Instructions: The hardest part about this one is not getting killed. Dash up to the top and push the bubble straight in (maybe even kill a Baddie on the way!). If you end up with this arrangement (shown above) you need to get the Bonus Gold BEFORE going around to push Treasure 2 straight in. Rack up some points killing Baddies while you're headed over to line the second shot up!

Level 6

Treasures: 2
Maximum Baddies: 3
Bonus Bubble Value: 30 points
Minumum Score: 25 points
Instructions: This is my least favorite level of the early levels. Its a pain; the Baddies are out to move all of your bubbles before you put them in the right place. You can do it though! Stay calm, don't panic and follow along. Move that first bubble off to the right, and ignore the closest Treasure. Go up to the corner, moving the bubble for step 2 before popping the two for step three. Push the Treasure left, then pop the three bubbles (the last is the one you just moved there). Get between the wall and the Treasure, push it down, pop the bubble for step 6, then push your first Treasure in. That part looked complicated, and was easy; the next part is similar - looks harder than it is. Pop the bubbles for steps 7 and 8, getting under (between the wall and the dark bubble) the next bubble, to push it up, so its to the immediate right of the Chest. Pop the bubble for step 10, and push THAT dark bubble to the right, then up, so it lines up with the first one you pushed into place. Go back, pop the step 11 bubble, push right and up so now you have three dark bubbles extending down. They're in place to "catch" the last Treasure, so go push it into place, just like the arrow shows. Then get under it, and push it into the Chest. *whew* (The next one is easier!)

Level 7

Treasures: 2
Maximum Baddies: 3
Bonus Bubble Value: 35 points
Minumum Score: 25 points
Instructions: Push that first bubble to the right so it creates a "catch" for you. If something happens to this one, it can be replaced with the one just above your starting position on the Board. Then go push both Treasures to the left. Push the one from step two up, then right, then up, then right in the Chest. Do the same with the step three Treasure. If you're hunting for Baddies or Gold or Bubbles, I'd get that second Treasure in the spot immediately to the left of the Chest before any of that. It's too easy for the "catch" bubble to disappear and its a tough one to replace (or can be).

Level 8

Treasures: 1
Maximum Baddies: 1
Bonus Bubble Value: 40 points
Minumum Score: 10 points
Instructions: This is a good level to take a break on, if you need one, once you get the Treasure lined up, and if the Baddie is in the top right part of the Board. They seem to stay in zones on this level (top left, bottom right or bottom left). Just hope that the Baddie doesn't start in the lower left part of the game, you might need a restart if that's the case because it can be impossible to complete the level if they're there. Start off getting around to the bottom of the Board (if you go fast enough, you may not even have to deal with a Baddie, if you luck out and get one in the part of the screen where this one is showing up). Pop those two bubbles then push the third one to the right. You've got to HOPE none of those turns into Baddies (either at the start of the level or if you go for the 5 available points from killing one Baddie). Move the rock down, then backtrack so you can push it entirely out of the way. Now go back to the Treasure, push it to the right, then get under it (the space you moved the rock from) and push up, then push it right. Pop that light blue bubble you moved into place earlier (you're done with it), and push the Treasure up, then to the left, into the Chest. Easy, right?

Level 9

Treasures: 3
Maximum Baddies: 3
Bonus Bubble Value: 45 points
Minumum Score: 30 points
Instructions: Pop those two bubbles, then push the dark one into the corner, otherwise you'll be trapped on your way to getting the second Treasure put away. For the first Treasure, pop the five bubbles surrounding the Treasure closest to where you started and follow the arrows to put it in the Chest (up, right, pop two bubbles, push up, right and in). Now get up and behind the Treasure at the top of the Board (you'll be to its right, facing it). Push it left, then down. Go out the "secret passage" you created when moving that dark bubble in your first move, and get behind the Treasure (to its left, facing it). Push it in the chest. For the last one, pop the two bubbles indicated for step 6 (yes, you'll move the second one then pop it), then go around behind the Treasure (on its right, facing it). Push to the left, then push it up into the Chest. Make sure you've killed your maximum Baddies, and if you can manage a Bonus Bubble on this level, go for it - the extra points start being worth it here. Also, there is a series of levels coming up with no Baddies (which means no Bonus Bubbles), so, best to go for some now, if you feel comfortable.

Level 10

Treasures: Just 1.
Maximum Baddies: 3
Bonus Bubble Value: 50 points
Minumum Score: 20 points
Instructions: Another level like 6 was where the Baddies are constantly in your way or they've meddled with your bubbles and making a mess of things. You did that one, and you can do this one too. Make sure you have a bubble where the ones with the purple Xs are, as they're important to "catch" the Treasure as you push it into place. First pop the row of bubbles (the four in a row, then the lone one sticking out on its own) as indicated by the oval around them. Move up and behind the Treasure, push it down, onto the "catch". Move around behind it by popping the bubbles indicated in step 3. Push it to the left (arrow indicated by #4), and then down into the Chest (5). This one was a bit messy to draw on, but hopefully, coupled with this written step-by-step set of instructions, you'll have little to no trouble - at least not with the idea of finishing the level. The Baddies might have other ideas - good luck!

Level 11

Treasures: 1
Maximum Baddies: 2, possibly 3, but I wouldn't go for the maximum - I'd just be pleased getting through the level.
Bonus Bubble Value: 55 points (Good luck catching it though! This one has VERY tight spaces!)
Minumum Score: 15 points (at least), but be pleased with 5.
Instructions:This is the level where luck plays the greatest role, but its a straightforward level, and not too hard to think through. You have to hope that no Baddies make the route impassible (the long stretch just before the Treasure), and that Bonus Gold doesn't end up in the top row. Follow the first LONG arrow around to the top left corner, popping bubbles and avoiding or killing baddies as you go. I find it can be important sometimes to get up to that last stretch sort of fast, if there are baddies up there, since if they're there, you'll want to use that right-most bubble to kill them.

Level 12

Treasures: 2
Maximum Baddies: 3
Bonus Bubble Value: 60 points
Minumum Score: 25 points
Instructions: Evade the Baddies until you can move into place to push the Treasures. It doesn't matter which Treasure you push first, they're just numbered steps for ease of explaining. If you decide to try the route shown, pop the five bubbles surrounding that first Treasure, move behind it and push it so it lands atop the Chest, then move behind it (facing the Chest and the Treasure) and push it in. As you swim back down to get that second Treasure, pop the pair of bubbles (step 3) then the one at the bottom of that "column" (step 4). Push the Treasure right in and you're done. For maximizing the killing of Baddies (just 3, but maybe you'll get a Bonus Bubble, perhaps needing to kill more to get it to appear) I think I'd reverse the order in which I move the Treasures, though. You're a little better shielded that way. Its a matter of personal preference though.

Level 13

Treasures: 3
Maximum Baddies: Only 1.
Bonus Bubble Value: 65 points
Minumum Score: 20 points
Instructions: This level, like 12, doesn't have a true best order to push the Treasures in; they're just numbered to help you see how to do it (with practice you can mix it up however you like). The most crucial step: push the rock either up or down out of the way (but, you don't even REALLY have to do that, but if you push it left or right, you have to clear more bubbles to get it out of the way of your line of fire to the Chest). At this point in the game, you should know how to get behind Treasures to push them in the Chest, so I didn't include ALL of the bubbles you need to push and pop out of the way to get behind the Treasure - just the ones to clear the way to get the Treasures in the Chest. (If you think I should re-do the image to include that information, please neomail me.) So, you move the rock, get rid of bubbles (step 2 and 3) and toss the first Treasure in. Pop the bubbles for 5 and 6, push that Treasure in. Pop 8, push 9. Or just pop 8 and try for a Bonus Bubble, then push 9. Baddies will get you more by pushing a bubble at you rather than by nabbing you in this level and I believe you only cope with one at a time on the board. Not a bad level at all...

Level 14

Treasures: 3
Maximum Baddies: 1
Bonus Bubble Value: 70 points
Minumum Score: 20 points
Instructions: This is your last chance for a Bonus Bubble until level 19. Try for one; you'll be glad you did! (When I've played this far, more often than not, one will show up, though a few times it took killing more than 5-6 Baddies.) Now, the "how to": Move any of the rocks in the top half of the Board to get out (best bet: go with the one marked). Then push the topmost Treasure down so it is "caught" by the one directly below it, then push it into the dark bubble, then down into the Chest. Push the next Treasure in the Chest, then kill Baddies until you get at LEAST one Bonus Bubble. It *is* possible to get more than one but it may take some REAL work (and patience!) for that. If you find yourself needing more bubbles, keep a Slugawoo around and let it make some for you so you have plenty to keep pushing (for kills) and for hatching Baddies to emerge from. Eventually, push that last one in and you're homefree for a while (no Baddies on the next few levels, remember?).

Level 15

Treasures: 1
Maximum Baddies: None. (Just like level 4)
Bonus Bubble Value: 0 points
Minumum Score: 5 points
Instructions: This is the first in a series of four non-Baddie levels. These are puzzles, pure and simple. Well, not so simple, but you've got infinite time (and this guide) to help you figure them out! Start by pushing the leftmost rock down and out of your way. Now head over to the other rock (indicated by step 2) and push it into the end of that row of shells, then up, right and up into the wall, behind those two shells. Now, go back and focus on the Treasure. The level isn't so much difficult as tedious with all the moving around to get into place for pushing and there's more of that for this phase. Push it to the left into the shell, then down into that other shell. Next, it follows the same path you just took with the rock, until you push it into the rock. Look! Now it's all set up to push into the Chest - and on to the next level...

Level 16

Treasures: 5
Maximum Baddies: None.
Bonus Bubble Value: 0 points
Minumum Score: 25 points
Instructions: Yes, I know this looks a bit confusing, but it's really not. Collect any Bonus Gold on your way to that Treasure numbered 1. Push it to the right, and in the Chest it goes. Treasure 2, push left then up, then right, into the Chest. Go get the Rock (4) out of your way, then push THAT Treasure down, and to the right. (Yes, the most annoying thing about this level is all the swimming you have to do to get in place for these pushes.) The next Treasure (6) is pushed left from behind, then swim around to push it down, then swim all the way around to the bottom so you can push it in the Chest. Last but not least, go push that final Treasure to the right, then up so it is "caught" by the Shell. Push it right into the next Shell, then down, left, and down again. Lastly, swim around and push it rigit, into the Chest. Not too bad, right?

Level 17

Treasures: 1
Maximum Baddies: None.
Bonus Bubble Value: 0 points
Minumum Score: 5 points
Instructions: You know how this works by now...push the Rock up, againste the Shell, then off to the right to create a "catch". You need to build it up a bit more, so use the Rock marked 2, pushing it left, then up, then right to meet the first one you placed. Go get the Rock at the top of the Board out of the way. Now, push that Treasure down (into the Shell), left (so it's caught by that other Shell), then up (yes, caught by a Shell again), and finally that long push to the right so it's caught by the two Rocks you put into place for just that purpose. Get rid of those two light bubbles so you can push the Treasure in the Chest and you're off!

Level 18

Treasures: 2
Maximum Baddies: None.
Bonus Bubble Value: 0 points
Minumum Score: 10 points
Instructions: Push bubble 1 up, then right to create a "catch" - this level is all about "catches". Now push the next bubble (3) up, creating a "catch" for steps 4 and 5. After you push those two (separately) up, then right, then down (finish the first of the two, then repeat the entire sequence), go add the next two (6 and 7) to that long, 4-bubble "catch". All that is left is to move the Treasures, which must be done separately (one goes in the Chest before you touch the next one). Down, then right, then up (b), then right, then then down, then left. Not too hard, once you have your "catches" in place, but "seeing" that given this initial diagram might be tough. Just trust the process - you made it this far, didn't you? Before you push that last Treasure into the Chest, make sure you've gotten a snack, moved around a bit, cleared your head, are comfortable, and so forth. Also, have you used 1morekarpohplease for the extra life? Type it again to be sure. You want every advantage you can get going into the next level. Okay, NOW do that last push and move on.

Level 19

Treasures:
Maximum Baddies: I haven't found out. Good luck finishing the level - I haven't yet.
Bonus Bubble Value: 95 points (you'll want to try for this before bothering with trying for ANY Treasures in the Chest.)
Minumum Score: ?? points
Instructions: Just like level 14, I have had luck getting the Bonus Bubble to show up. It can certainly put you over the top for the points you need. I would reccomend trying to not die, and to keep killing Baddies until one of these shows up. If I manage to finish the level sometime, I'll let you know if there's an end of game bonus or something that helps you get a trophy. Until then, the diagram is theoretical. I've had trouble setting enough of it up to even get ONE Treasure in - those Slorgs are relentless! (I'd leave any Slugawoos alive as long as I could, since they're slowest, but even they speed up here!)

If you add up the Minimum Score for each level, you can see that it's not enough for the avatar (its only 365 points, but that's with ZERO Bonus Gold, stacked kills, Bonus Bubbles or anything else). However, with a little luck, a couple of Bonus Bubbles, and some practice, you should be showing off your Raiders of Maraqua avatar in no time!
