Featured Article!

2nd September 2008

This week's featured article has been brought to you by Newsweek Stocks and Associates.

From Day to Day as a Daytrader

Many people have asked the question: What is Daytrading?

Put simply, it is Day Trading. Too simple?
Daytrading is the buying and selling of a stock on a daily basis. Or maybe 2 days. Or maybe 3. The point is, it is the act of buying the stock and selling it as quickly as possible for as much profit as you can get.

Now there is an extremely common misconception among non-daytraders. Many people seem to believe that a stock has to be at a high price for one to daytrade it. The truth of the matter is, I could buy a stock at 15 and sell it at 17 later in the day and it would be called daytrading. There would be exactly the same amount of risk if you had bought it at 15 and held it to 60.

So we know daytrading doesn't have to be risky. So why do some people still buy high? The real reason is because we want it to be like that. No pain, no gain. The riskier it gets, the better the payoffs if you do it right.
Here's how I got there.

Typically a stock will move anywhere from -20% to +20% in a single day. This rise is usually capped at about 50 points for the very high stocks. In a bit, you will see why I use the percentages.

An extremely important figure we must note in our daytrading is the 1000 stocks per day limit that we have placed on us. This not only limits the amount of money we can spend, but also the amount of money we can make.

Scenario time.

There are 2 stocks. One is at 15, and one is at 100. Let us assume that we can buy up to 2000 stocks per day. We buy 1000 shares of stock A at 15 and 1000 shares of stock B at 100. Both of them rise by 15%, after which we sell.

Stock A costs 15,000NP. A 15% profit (+2 points) would give us 2000NP pure profit.

Stock B costs 100,000NP. A 15% profit (+15 points) would give us 15000NP pure profit.

So as you can see, the number of raw points the stock moves up affects our profit. Stocks at a higher price tend to move more points in one day than stocks at a lower price. But imagine for a minute that you could buy as many stocks in a day as you would like. If you had bought 10,000 shares of A instead, that would give you a profit of 20,000NP. That would give us more profit than stock B for much less risk. But alas, there is a 1000 a day limit, forcing us to stick with stock B to make the most profit.

But you're probably like "So.....umm.....you would do all of that – go through all of that drama – to make 15k? I could make that in 30 minutes, no risk involved and no calculations by playing games. Even better, I could restock a few items to make that easy. Where is the real money at?? What is all the fuss about daytrading really about???"

You haven't seen anything yet.

At 7:00am on the morning of April 13th 2007 POWR peaked at a whopping 861NP per share. At that point, in the space of 24 hours it could move as much as 50-60 points per day. That was the equivalent of 60k a day.

Not bad for a day's work, eh? But that was on a good day. But you had to be willing to cough up 800,000NP+ to be held in escrow.

But can't we make more than that by selling at 60+? Not really. Nothing in the stock market beats 60k a day. But you must ask the question. Why do we play the Stock Market? Why don't we restock, or play games?

For a single person it may be different. But I am sure that I speak for many when I say that it is because I can double or triple my investment with very little effort. Yes the stock market is slow, but it is also a blessing. Because of this snail's pace we can check up on our stocks as little as once a day. Daytrading removes this luxury – we have to constantly check our stocks.

In addition, with the randomness of stocks we can pick any stock to buy on mere whim, not even taking us a minute a day. With daytrading we must put more effort into getting the right stock.

So now you know that the 15-30 or 15-60 methods are alot easier than daytrading. But what if we wanted a faster profit? I need money. And ASAP too!! There is an option that you have.

No, it is not daytrading.

Or anything to do with the stock market as a matter of fact.

Ever heard of restocking?

Let me tell you why restocking is a better option.

Daytrading
I buy a stock. Check back every 30 minutes for the next (??) hours until it goes up. Sell for a minimal profit.

Restocking
Buy the goods in a store. Put it in your shop. Snap your fingers, say "Alakazam". Profit. Skadoosh.

Daytrading
Ever heard of a stock crash? "Every stock that has risen so far has fallen eventually. That is, except for POWR." Will it fall eventually? Yeah, it will. But we don't know when. But when it does...prepare to wait. Because you'll be waiting. Very long.

Restocking
Do I have to repeat myself? Buy the goods in a store. Put it in your shop. Snap your fingers, say "Alakazam". Profit. Skadoosh. One shot. No holding. No regrets. Instant profit. Item prices can't crash in what was it......30 seconds?

So I believe I have made my opinions very clear. I would like to highlight here two methods that are attractive money making ventures.
One is the stock market. 15-30 and 15-60 methods are very effective. Refer here to learn. Number two is restocking your shop. This is if you can't wait. Refer here for a guide.
I hope you note that daytrading is not listed here. It is not an attractive money making venture. Daytrading is for fun – a game of luck and chance, but nothing more. Other games you may be interested in are the Wheel of Excitement and Dice A Roo.
Young investors, please stay away. Leave it to the experts.

Port of the Week!

Every week, I will bring you you a portfolio from a regular stocker just like you. If you would like to be featured here, just neomail me! Most of the time, I will neomail you.

6th September 2008

This week's Port of the Week was done by STC regular Hydro. He is himself a 'starter' in the stock market and should have some excellent tips...let's see...

Totals: 157,000 shares at total investment of 2,359,000NP.

No. of unique stocks in portfolio: 32 companies.

Price buys at:I buy at 15, unless it's late in the day and nothing is at 15, then I buy at 16 or 17. Buying at a higher price than 15 is alot better than buying none at all, and I have no problem buying at 15 or 16. I usually buy shares in the company that is at 15 that I have the least of. If I have the same number of shares of all the stocks at 15, I pick the one with the name I like the best =P

Stock held most: Right now, I have 16,000 shares of NAKR. My next highest is 8,000 shares of TAG. All my others are pretty much evenly spread out.

Sale price: 60+ usually... Sometimes I sell for a little less than 60, sometimes I try to hold for higher, other times I sell as soon as it hits 60. You can see everything I bought and sold at Uranium's page

Motivation for playing the stock market: I don't like putting effort into earning neopoints. I'd rather hang out and chat with the STC crew. But, I want stuff. It's easy neopoints and fairly quick once the building period is over. My current goals are a plushie paint brush, a fire paint brush, and books galore.

31st August 2008

This week's Port of the Week has been brought to you by ivarngizteb. He was the first volunteer!!

Totals: 27,000 stocks at a value of 412,500NP

No. of unique stocks in portfolio: 21 at the moment - still building.

Price buys at:I always buy between the prices of 15-17NP per share. There is almost always one at that price, so I pick the cheapest. If there are more than one at 15, I pick the one that has not peaked in the longest while. I use Neodaq.com for my information on histories.

Stock held most: I believe in a diversified portfolio, so I do not have a favourite or least favourite. My shares are pretty much spread out.

Sale price: I have my own little technique of selling. I watch the stock until it crosses 30. The moment it drops by 1 point, I sell half of my holdings. If it drops by more than that I sell all of them. The reason for this is so that I can gain a steady income and I don't have to wait for a long time.

Motivation for playing the stock market: I have played for about a month now, and I am saving up to buy a Rainbow Paint Brush. I gain 15,000NP a day by playing games, so any and all of the profits I get from the Stock Market go to my savings.

23rd August 2008

This week's Port of the Week (and the first) has been brought to you by DT Kitty. Thanks for being the first one to agree to my interviews!!

Totals: Enough

No. of unique stocks in portfolio: 42 - I have some of every stock, excepting POWR right now, although I did daytrade POWR very successfully for awhile.

Price buys at: I must say that I do buy every day, I think that is the key to this game. Buy every chance you get! I am pretty much a diverse player, buying as high as 20 on occasion in order to fill out a holding, but on the other hand, I'm not a fanatical diversifier, that is, I dont have to keep everything exactly even, so most of my purchases are @ 15 - 16. E.g. today PDSS was @ 17, but BOTT was @ 15.. although I had only 17k of PDSS my BOTT was riding a bit low, only 22k, and that was my choice today. I think I'll get plenty of chances to buy up PDSS before it hits big time again!

Stock held most: I do not have one company hoard, I'm not interested in doing that, although I like to watch the big time hyperstockers play their game!

Sale price: As for selling, I will sell 1k when something goes 60ish, and stagger the sells as it rises. I always sell as a stock goes up, never down, there is no reason for that other than greed. If a company has hit 62 and I come online and it's 60, I won't sell that first 1,000 shares unless it goes higher!. The same holds for any price I sell at. By 85 I would have sold half and I hold atleast 10k for the elusive triples! But I sell, especially in the 100's as they are rare, and I love to sell.

Motivation for playing the stock market: Even with the evil Tarla deflating investments, there is a lot to be made in the items trades, and I have some very expensive neohobbies I want to keep up with! Plus I like to buy whatever I like without worrying about making points beforehand. I make my port work for me, and it works hard so that I can get the points I need!

Don't know how to use the information provided below? When buying a stock, you might want to take a look at these priorities:

1. Select the stocks that are in the buying range that you are willing to pay (maybe around 15-17, or the 5 cheapest stocks available).
2. Pick the stock that you think that you do not have enough of. For example, if you have none of a certain stock, buy it.
3. Have equal amounts of stocks? Or do you just have a grudge against a certain stock? Take a look at the.stock.stats. You might want to select one that peaks regularly, or one that reaches reasonably high.

Ready to sell? If you're not sure when you should sell, take a look at the recommended sell price. If you prefer to make your own decisions and gloat about it to your friends after, look at the average peak, the previous high and the time between peaks to get a formula of success!

the.stock.stats

You can't judge a person by the way they look or dress - they might just surprise you - but you can get a reasonable idea of their personality sometimes. What about stocks and their history?....

This section was made to help you get easy information on stocks and to help you in deciding which to buy and when to sell. You do not have to follow the reccommendations, but rather use them as a second opinion. Good luck!

Just so you know what the terms mean;

Ticker - The shorthand name of the stock Previous High - This is the highest price the stock has ever been selling at. Average Peak - Unlike the previous high, the stock peaks at this high on a regular basis. A peak is considered to be no less than 45. Length between runs - A run is a cycle of a stock as it rises from 15, peaks and goes back down. This is the distance between those cycles. Recommended Sell Price - Based on the average peak, I have recommended a sale for our starting investors to help them. Feel free to disagree with me. Last Peak Date - This is the date of the previous time the stock was priced at 45+.

Please note - occasionally, you will see that the 'Previous High' price was not listed in the Average Peak Height. This is because there is not much chance of it occurring again. If a '/' sign is placed next to it, with another range, it is likely that the stock may reach the height again, so some stocks should be kept just in case. A range is provided, instead of a single value so that you can make different sales at different prices. I hope this information helps.

Special Stocks

It is extremely important that before you start using these statistics for your buying and selling purposes, you take into consideration that stock history is liable to change over time. As a result, this section is to act as a guide to which stocks are most constant, and which are likely to change.
