the galactic files

Imagine this - A space station floating in a distant galaxy packed full with Neopians trying to keep all of the sectors of the ship in order. Captain Katherine was busy making sure the Quiggles had their daily pay by noon when a surprise attack was launched on the station. It was lead by none other than Sloth and his Korbat minions. The battle was very violent and many Neopians saw their lives flash before their eyes. Sloth and his army took victory and launched the dismantled shuttle into Jupiter's orbit forever....

!!!NEWSFLASH!!!NEWSFLASH!!!NEWSFLASH!!!

Hold on a moment, I am getting an urgent message from Sergeant Carlyle. "Sergeant 4231 this is Captain 5674, what is your dilemma?" The phone reception is getting quite fuzzy! "I apologize Captain 5674, this just in, I am on board the Valex!" Oh my goodness, do you have any idea what this news means? Sergeant 4231 has finally found our old space station! "Brilliant work Sergeant, report back to me with your coordinates." "Ok, I am at.... AHH!" "Sergeant?" Oh dear, I seem to have lost the connection. Wait, we are getting a video message from his ParaPod. Now Loading...

Hello Captain Katherine. It is I, Sloth and I really owe you a big thank you for sending your saddest excuse for an agent to find the old ship now known as my new home base. I thought I might take this time to warn you that I am coming to visit your little planet, what is it called again, right, Neopia! I am coming to crush your planet and everything you have so that I can be the new head of the NCIA! Until next time my dear... MWAHAHA!

Oh my Gnorbu! This is the worst thing that could have happened. We have to prepare and make sure all of our sectors are in tip top shape right away. "Calling all agents, calling ALL agents, pull out your Galactic Files.

Your tour guide

Well, hello there kind stranger. Since Captain Katherine is in such a rush to make sure everything is running smoothly, she has assigned me the task of helping you clean up your own sector. Oh, allow me to introduce myself. I am GX-A Oscillabot but everyone calls me Squirt in the station. The Galactic Files are basically instructions on what to do in case a situation like this was to happen. These tips will help to get your sector running smoothly again. Whenever you see me in the file, that means I have something important to say so don't skip over those notes and if you are having technical difficulties just click on me to ask your question. Got everything? Great, the best of luck to you and your preparations. This is going to be a blast...

Scenario - Sadly, you have been assigned the one sector in the entire ship that hasn't functioned in nearly three years. You are going to have to start from the beginning on this one and get it working again.

What kind of sector would you like to create?

Pixel sites became very popular in 2009 but over time they have dwindled down to a much smaller popularity level. I sense that they are about to become alot more popular thanks to talented graphic designers like Wynne and Sophia who are very talented at making pixels.

Adoption agencies are timeless. They will always be busy because so many people on Neopets like to trade their pets around. Personally, I have no true interest in them but many people do. My problem is that there are so many adoption agencies already available that having another one seems like a waste of time.

Guides are much like adoption agencies but unlike trading, guides are so important because they are very helpful for many people. The world will never have enough guides. No matter what your guide is about whether it be stamps, coding or paintbrushes, someone will use your guide and be grateful for it.

Contest and ranking sites are very popular right now because it gives site owners something to look forward to each month. The bad thing about these sites is that they are really high maintenance. Owners like Joaquin and Ryan update almost every single day and they keep everything running smoothly.

Fonts are so popular right now that it is almost hard to believe. For people who constantly surf the boards like me, your font means everything! I have a strong feeling though that the popularity of fonts is slowly dwindling and soon than later, people will realize how easy it is to make a font and just start making their own.

Graphics and requests site are tons of fun to own but very high maintenance. Graphics site are no good if you make three banners and then leave it sitting there for a year or so with no updates. Request site, especially if you are talented, constantly stay super busy with requests to fill. Owners like Tenshi and Nikki have worked super hard to update often and keep adding new content for their loyal visitors.

Directories are very popular but they are probably the most high maintenance sites known to man and Neopian. You are guaranteed to get lots of visitors though and your inbox will always be full to the brim with listers.

This category holds all of the sites that do not have specific genres. It will be up to you how high the maintenance will be, what the site will require and all of the details. I find pages like there boring but some people really enjoy them. Do whatever you want with this category like Dream or someone else!

Music sites are not high maintenance at all but they are not popular either. We really need more music sites on Neopets. I personally like soft music playing in the background on a site but loud rock music is really annoying. If you have access to codes, this would be a great site to start.

Review sites require alot of attention and maybe some personal site experience would be nice. I really like review sites especially unique reviewers like Grace and Amy who both love to help other site owners make their sites as wonderful as they can possibly be.

Important Note From Squirt: So you have probably picked your site genre by now, correct? Great, now you have to pick your sector's name. This is much more important than you think because with a great name anything is possible. I know that I find a sector more appealing when they have a catchy name. Click here for some awesome names or click me to ask for a quick list.

Sector Blueprint

Scenario - Your control panels are rusted and the majority of your wires are water logged. You will be tearing everything down and starting with a fresh perspective so that you can customize everything to your liking.

What is your sector's style?
Your layout says alot about how high quality your site is. Take this guide for example, everything is very clean and neat and since the visitors will be focusing on what I have written, the layout is not very relevhant to me and even though simple css could have worked, I wanted to take it to the next level. Here are some sites that might require some extra attention.

If you are good at making pixels you are probably good at making vectors and scribbles. If you are able to make those, then you are capable of making an amazing layout, no excuses. Personally, I think a custom layout is a must for pixel sites. Great examples would be Nicole and Hestansy who work hard for counter hits.

To have a graphics site you have to know how to make wonderful graphics and if you can do that then you can certainly make a wonderful layout. Owners like Kitty and Belsha really have a knack for putting together great layouts that showcase their talents and keep they guests coming back for more.

Directories do not have to have fancy layouts but personally, I like it when directories have anchored and decorative layouts because they make for very organized directories. Navigation is a must on any directory of course so trying to be creative with your navigation might get you some extra brownie points on reviews.

Review sites are like directories because they do not have to be fancy but they have to be organized at all times. I really enjoy seeing review sites looking fancy and having pretty layouts. Review sites appeal to me more when the layouts are creative and full of life like owners Amy and Hannah have done with their own sites.

Where can I find a sector blueprint?
If you still feel like taking the easy way out or your site does not require fancy layouts and simple css will fit the bill, here is a list of wonderful sites here on Neopets that offer high quality layouts that you can customize to your liking.

Important Note From Squirt: Are you wondering why there are only four co-sectors listed for you to choose from? Well, that is because there are so many that we couldn't fit them all on our page. If you would like to see more visit one of your local directories like Soroptimist Directory or Little Black Book today. Click me for further questions or continue reading.

Banners really spice up your layouts and let everyone know what the name of your site is in a creative way. Some people like to make thier own banners and if you can you should definetly try to! It is ok though if you can not because there are tons of sites on Neopets that offer custom banners like the ones listed above. For more, visit 5th Avenue and look under Requests.

Construction Process

Scenario - While the construction crew stays busy building your super sector, you should probably get to work on the programming. All you have is a computer and a floppy disk, time to start working really hard and really fast.

What does my sector require?

Pixel sites typically include pixels, scribbles, vectors and resources. Pixels are tiny images, normally 50x50 at the largest and they are really fun to make and site owners love to use them in blogs. Scribbles are made by taking the pencil tool on Paint and drawing a cute animal or something. Vectors are edited images that look really smooth and clean. Resources are open and closed signs, bullets and anything that can be used on a site to keep it organized. Not all of this is required but you at least need pixels and resources.

Adoption agencies all require the same things regardless of how unique you would like to present it. You need a form for potential listers to fill out and send to you, pictures of the pets that are up for adoption, their stats including gender and contact and some form of organization.

What you put into your guide is totally up to you but lots of helpful tips and resources are a must have in any guide. If it was a paintbrush guide, you would have the prices and pictures of the paintbrushes listed on the page. Whatever you choose to make your guide about, you should have helpful tips and resources.

Contest and ranking sites might include SOTM (Site of The Month) BOTM (Button of The Month) BOTM (Banner of The Month) and many more contests that you might make up on your own. Ranking sites just include categories and the list of people that you think represent the best sites in Neopia.
