Come swim with me

For the longest while you don't notice it there. You go about your business, relaxing quietly on the beach, the only one left lingering on the sands as the sun rises higher into the sky. Occasionally you reach into the cooler conveniently nestled in the sands beside your chair and with a snick you crack open a can and sip leisurely from your drink.

After several more minutes of this, the heat becomes too much for you and you rise from your chair to begin packing things away. It's as you are turning to uproot the umbrella that has been protecting you from the sun's harsh rays that you see it.

You cry out, startled, when you spy the pair of blue eyes watching you. The creature, larger than a man, lies half buried among the sea foam, its fins and spines swaying freely at the waters touch. Its orange and blue scales glitter in the sunlight. It blinks as it stares back at you.

Hi. It softly greets in a surprisingly feminine voice.

Unsure of how to respond you raise a hand weakly. A mockery of a wave.

The draik suddenly raises her head, fins flared attentively. You're the first human I've seen in a while that hasn't run at the sight of me, she informs you. I like you already. Come on, she rises to her paws and grips your forearm gently. Her paws are completely clawless and surprisingly very human in design.

Let's go for a swim.

Tensed and unsure of how to react, you allow her to drag you forward a few paces. Are you supposed to tell her that you can't breath underwater? Will that anger her? She has no claws, but she seems fairly fit and muscled. And those teeth you had noticed as she was speaking to you can do more than their fair share of damage.

She suddenly stops. Oh wait, she exclaims, seeming to recall something. You exhale with relief, believing that she has realized that you are strictly a land-dwelling creature.

She looks back at you. I want to make you something.

Dismayed, you watch at she tugs something lose of her fins. A few limp blades of seaweed.

She grins. I'm Shoiree, by the way. Or Ree. Call me Ree. It rolls off the tongue more easily.

I'm sure you will more than appreciate this, little one. She releases your arm and, skillfully, weaves the seaweed into a thick cord. After tying the ends together, she creates something similar to a necklace. She laps at a few of the blades and examines her handiwork carefully.

That oughta do it. She drapes the slimy thing about your neck and, with a graceful dive, drags you into the water with her.

You cry out as you are submerged, the water drowning out your screams. As you hit the water, however, you find it surprisingly... breathable.

Ree looks back at you and laughs at the surprise on your face, the sound strange beneath the water.

She releases her hold on your arm and you scramble to grab hold of the ribbon-like fins that grow from her shoulders. Her swimming becomes more graceful, more serpentine in movement as she drags you deeper into the ocean.

Eventually, the draik brings you to a sunken ship, half buried in the sand and quite a distance from shore. A tattered black flag sways slowly in the water from its place on a cracked mast. Along the side of the ship are the words Royal Fortune, the name of the vessel.

Ree slips into the gaping hole punched into the hull by some ancient storm long ago, bringing you with her. You release her fins and allow yourself to sink to the sand, soft against your feet.

Do you live here? You ask.

Ree looks back at you and smiles. Yep. Home sweet home. It used to be a pirate ship. I had to clean, uh clean away some rather... unpleasant findings, she shifts uncomfortably and gives you a sad smile. You decide not to press any further on the subject.

But once those were gone, She says, bouncing back into her happy attitude, I was able to set everything up and move things around. Some old furniture on the ship was still salvageable and I was able to make myself a little house. I make little trips to Maraqua every now and then to get more stuff, but I'm pretty happy with how everything has worked out so far.

She swims forward a short distance and adjusts a small figurine that you guess was once made of gold on a worn dresser. To the left of the dresser, an equally as worn bookshelf is propped against the wall, practically overflowing with trinkets. Several sealed chests were stacked against the far wall, creating a semi-circle formation around a section of sand well-worn into a basin shape. Her bed, you assume.

Your assumption is confirmed as she curls up inside said basin and, resting her head on her paws, stares at you with intelligent blue eyes.

We should talk about something. She states.

You pause, trying to think of anything to say. Uhm... I suppose you could... talk about yourself some. I mean, I barely know anything about you and you brought me to your home.

Ree raises her head, eyes bright as she opens her mouth to tell about herself.

Romance

The look on her face becomes one of sadness. She rises from her bed. The ribbon-like spines protruding from her shoulders, while limp and dull on land, flare out angelically underwater, similar to the wings of her air-born kin.

I love many things, she begins softly. I love the endlessness of the sea, I love the thousands upon thousands of undiscovered secrets hidden beneath the sands. I love the surface and all the wonders of land dwellers like you.

I loved my sisters. And I still do, despite all that they've done. But... to say that I've ever truly... loved someone... I can't say that. And that makes me sad. Being an outcast of your own people makes finding someone... difficult. I have no happy ever after. No charming prince to sweep me off my feet, like in the stories I've read.

A hopeful smile graces her face and the same happy-go-lucky spark returns to her eyes, albeit, a more muted version. At least not yet.

Treasure Chest

Ree turns toward the "wall" of chest circling her bed, gesturing dramatically. These are all things I've found during my travels. Most of them came from the ocean, but a few of them did come from the surface. I like to grab something to take back home whenever I go up.

She flashes a smile that was almost childish in its excitement and lifts the lid of the nearest chest. She dips her finger inside and begins to tell you about the many things she had collected over the years.

Everything inside of these chests has a story behind. But, for the sake of not boring you out of your skull, I'll give you the simplified, short-and-sweet versions...

Skiffy

You notice, toward the end of the draik's story that the fins upon her head began to sway and tremble seemingly of their own accord. You are about to say something to her just as a small orange and teal head pops into view. A tiny Maraquan gallion, huffing and snorting indignantly, wriggles free of her fins and slides down her nose.

Ree laughs, snorting and sending the tiny creature half rolling, half swimming toward the sand. And a good morning to you too, Skiffy.

She picks up the small creature, cradling it between her paws and strokes its spine gently, trying to ease away its cranky attitude. He hates being woken. Be it because I want to play with him, be it because we need to get away from something potentially dangerous. Anything, really.

...What is it exactly? You venture, not wanting to offend. You haven't seen her angry just yet, but even her generous hospitality has to run out sometime.

She holds out her paws toward you, the small pet only inches from your face. The drozy gallion glares at you.

It, She begins, mimicking your tone playfully, is Skiffy. He was a gift from my sisters before everything went... badly. A shadow passes over her face and, for a moment, all of her upbeat happiness seems to drain from her body. She bounces back quickly, however and pulls the small pet close to her chest fondly. Little Skiffy waited here for me while I was gone. For several months, he somehow managed to survive here all on his little ownsome. How, I have no idea. He can barely feed himself, so I have no possible idea how he managed to survive for so long.

She places the gallion back on the sand, where it proceeds to immediately swim in a tiny circle, creating a nest in which it settled down and fell instantly to sleep.

He's an amazing little thing, though. Ree says, watching her little pet snore softly.

Agron

Agron is the very first pirate I have ever met. The only experience I've ever had with pirates prior to our meeting was through exaggerated stories and the occasion ship that sails by overhead. But Agron is exciting. He's been on so many adventures. I'm sure he has so many stories to tell and I can't wait to hear some of them. And better yet, he didn't judge me like Wyn or Cos when he saw the lanterns around my ship. He's accepting of me, for the most part anyway. And it's a nice change to the way I've been treated in the past. Along with Harli, I think Agron is one of the few true friends I have left. And I am forever grateful for that.

Farewell

You watch as Ree rolls lazily in the water. Her eyes are droopy and she yawns occasionally. You look tired. You observe.

Ree smiles at you softly. A bit, yes. She stretches and tosses her head, trying to shake off her exhaustion. She shoots you an apologetic look. I have had fun speaking with you, little one. She begins. But I am getting sleepy. And a sleep deprived Shoiree can be quite an intimidating sight.

Skiffy snorts from his place in the sand, as if in agreement.

Besides, She swims toward you and inspects the seaweed around your neck. That only has a little juice left. Stay much longer and you, my friend, will drown.

Meaning it as a playful joke, she stares at you, shocked, when a look of panic crosses your face. You grip at your throat, terrified by the thought.

Not that I would ever let you drown! No, no! She blurts out quickly, shaking her head.

She growls in frustration. Gah! You see how I get when I'm tired? I start threatening the existence of friends. No, no. To the surface now.

She floats passed you a short ways, slowing to allow you enough time to latch onto her ribbony "wings" and darts off toward the surface.

She leaves you a short distance away from shore and with a gentle good-bye, disappears into the depths of the sea.

You resurface with a starving gasp, gulping down the fresh, salty air greedily.

A small, vacationing family watches you from the beach as you crawl onto shore, a slimy cord of seaweed bound about your neck. Their disbelieving gazes still on your back, you move to collect your things which, miraculously, remain untouched and head off.
