For a few seconds, nothing happens. Then, from seemingly out of nowhere, a Kau sidles up to you, looks around carefully and says: "You stumbled upon my secret page then. I suppose you want some help with the Mystery Pic then?" You nod. "Thought so," continues the Kau. "But that's all you are getting. Help. I don't give out the answer. I know better than that, I have kau smarts of 10, you know. My owner has written a small guide which you might want to take a look at. But you won't be able to contact him, so don't even try. He has a secret identity elsewhere. And not even I know it..." With those words, the Kau is gone. You notice a guide to finding the Mystery Pic below.
So, you've tried to solve the Mystery Pic before, but you don't know where to start? How on earth can anyone find an image the size of a very small, square pea on a site that has hundreds, thousands, even millions of images? If you are looking for a quick way to make NP, then walk away now. If you are looking for a chance to earn yourself some NP, and perhaps a nice item, even a fancy trophy, then you might want to keep reading.
Before you even begin searching...
Go to the Mystery Pic page. (Click here)
You want to resize the image. If you can do html: Count the number of pixels in a row. (Normally 12 or 13.) Create an image link to the Mystery Pic somewhere that you can view it. Set width and height equal to the number of pixels. It should look something like this, but with the angled brackets: (img src=http://www.neopets.com/http://images.neopets.com/games/mysterypic/filename.gif width=13 height=13)
If you cannot do it this way, get a paint program, and shrink the image until it is the size you want. For a 13x13 MP, it should be this size: ![]()
Now you should have the Mystery Pic image at the correct size that it will be found on the site.
Where do I search?
There are certain locations that feature a lot. If you look at the answers to the past Mystery Pictures, you will see keywords like "neopedia" or "caption contest". These are good places to start looking. You want to find an image that matches the shrunken version in size and colour. Also, you will find that the current MP isn't very likely to be a Caption Contest if one the recent MPs was. It may save you some time by putting this location to the end of your search list.
I think I have found the right image! How do I make sure?
To check that the image you have found IS the MP:
1. Save the image to your Desktop.
2. Open the image with Paint (or your image program)
3. Select View, Zoom, Custom, and 800% (or use a zoom feature on your respective program.)
4. If you can match the original MP pixel for pixel, you have found the right image :) Well done! If not, keep searching.
I have the right image! But what do I write in the box?
If in doubt, go back to find a past MP in the same location. That should give you a good idea of what to write. Sometimes, Backgrounds especially, aren't so easy to name. Obviously, "background" is a key word. If you view the filename of the background, it might say "slorgday2005" or something along those lines. If you write "slorg day 2005 background" you should be fine, sometimes you don't need the extra information, but as long as you have the correct key words you should get the prize.
