Chapter One
The limbs of the trees that towered over her, crystallized in their ice casings, seemed to move with the breeze. Her wide eyes, the colour of a night-time sky lit only by stars, seemed intrigued that something as strong as a tree limb could move with such a slight wind. She thought of how one storm could knock over the sturdy figures. She tilted her head, her eyes glowing with curiosity. Amazing how the towers that kept her safe could easily be the death of her.
But this didn't frighten Scheath. Only sparked her curiosity. She was always thinking about everything. Her mind never stopped going. Each time something moved with the wind. Each time a snowflake fell from the sky. Each time it all gathered at her paws, and she went from standing in grass to standing in a snow drift. Each time anything around her changed in the slightest, a million thoughts swept through her mind at once. Her mind was all she had. She couldn't remember when she was born, or who her parents were. As far as she could tell, she'd always been alone. She might've fell from the sky with a snowflake, and instead of melted, she grew. But being in totally un-civilized territory didn't mean her intelligence was limited. She could think, speak, read. Very well, actually, though she never really spoke, unless to the trees and snowflakes.
Scheath lived in a forest along a huge, icy mountain range. It seemed to always be winter in her forest home. The forest was huge. She had never been to the end of it. She had come very close, though. She had spent days exploring, trying to find its end.
Chapter Two
She had been traveling for almost a week, she remembered. Her mind was flooding with thoughts of all the new places she'd never seen more than ever. She could smell the end of the woods... and then the storm struck. Pellets of ice the size of her paws were falling down hard, and painful. It was snowing so much, she could hardly see an inch in front of her. She wanted to be in her familiar surroundings, safe from the wind that threatened to blow her away. She wanted to be under the tree that had fallen over long ago, and now rested on a tree stump, leaving a safe shelter underneath. But Scheath couldn't get back, if she couldn't even see. So she dug a ditch, and crawled in. She piled snow on top of herself, as a blockade from the ice and wind, and eventually drifted into an uneasy sleep. When she awoke the next morning, fresh thoughts of what might've become of her home falling into her mind. She tried to ignore them, realizing it was a great deal brighter outside then it was when she fell asleep, and also realizing the sund of the snow storm were gone. She dug her way out of the ditch, which was now covered with a thick new layer of snow. When she was completely out, the snow went up to her chin, making it complicated, but fun, to walk in. She was somewhat in pain from the ice pellets hitting her, warn out, and tired. She had no choice but to return home.
