Neopet References GuideWelcome to my reference guide!
On this guide, you will discover the movies, shows, memes, books, and other pop culture media that inspire The Neopets Team.
What is a reference, you may ask? Well, it's sort of like an aspect of Neopets that was based off of something in, or hinting at, the real world. An easter egg, if you will.
Neopets is teeming with images that seem like traditionally wacky TNT-style ideas, but on closer inspection, those images are actually references to popular culture in today's society!
I hope you enjoy my findings! :D
If you have any references that are not yet listed, please feel free to Neomail me (weedle11) the item name and what it is a reference to!
Seeking more affiliates and listers as well!
Like the new header image? I think it's good, but it needs something. Tell me what you think here!
Hover over the images on the left to see the navigation categories! Hopefully this will fix the navigation covering the images problem.
Made them all myself, too :D
Another note: While I'm not on hiatus, life is going to be pretty busy for my for quite a while, so if you nm me a reference and don't see it added to the future section in 3 weeks or so, please, feel free to remind me to add it! It'll be a big help!
Update: I'm going on a hiatus for a while, since college is starting. I'll do my best to get back to people, but guide updates will be few and far between

The Cellblock opponent Haskoi's description seems like a reference (I think to Star Wars).
Han Solo: Let him have it. It's not wise to upset a Wookiee.
C-3PO: But sir, nobody worries about upsetting a droid.
Han Solo: That's 'cause droids don't pull people's arms out of their sockets when they lose. Wookiees are known to do that.
C-3PO: I see your point, sir. I suggest a new strategy, R2: let the Wookiee win.
The petpet Garfir is a manticore, by the way. I think they're from Greek or maybe Persian mythology.

Is this Luffy's Scar from the anime One Piece?
Mutant Kiko: Geodude
green lantern cake
Firefly reference I've noticed in the game Keyquest. In the scripted chat box one of the things you can say is "Shiny, captain" which is a quote from Kaylee in the pilot episode, 'shiny' being a word often used throughout the show in place of words like good or nice. More often than not it is used sarcastically though.
Hoban is a reference to the character Hoban Wash and the traveling draik outfit is the Captain Mal.
The Festive Birthday Wig is pink and red, but I believe it's a reference to Pinkie Pie, has the exact same flick at the front as she does. Plus birthdays are totally her thing. (unconfirmed)

A Tale of Two Lupes and A Tale of Two Slorgs reference the title of the novel A Tale of Two Cities
Grapes of Wrath - book/movie by John Steinbeck
The episode is Our Mrs Reynolds, and a conversation between Mal and Jayne. Not entirely sure the quote is entirely suitable for neopets given the nature of the weapon, but the part of it that doesn't mention the weapon is Mal: What I got? She has a name. Jayne: So does this. I call it Vera.
The book 'No Sleep Til Brightvale' is a ref to the Beastie Boys song 'No Sleep Til Brooklyn'
Fancy Petpet Food is a reference to fancy feast (the slogan is similiar and the labels on the cans are quite similiar) that one I am sure of. (unconfirmed)

Frodo Baggins from Lord of the Rings. Or Gandalf. Or Radagast. I'm not sure, really

Daisy from F.Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (probably)
The Muppet Chef person (unconfirmed, but i think they look alike)
Smee from Peter Pan, or one of the Dwarves from Snow White
The Sleuthing Background also uses the silhouette of The British Parliament and Big Ben
The book "We dont need stinkin apostrophes!" is a reference to a famous line from the Humphrey Bogart film Treasure of the Sierra Madre: "We don't need stinkin' badges"

Greyed Expectations (Great Expectations)
The Deathly Union Costume Pack is a reference to Emily, the title character from the film Corpse Bride.
Stitched Doll Face Paint is a reference to Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
The Royalboy and Royalgirl Tuskaninnies are dressed as the English monarchs King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.
The Old Mynci and the Sea, which is clearly The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway
They made a few references in TFR in Hanso's dialogue. The line "please understand I hold you in the highest respect" is from the Princess Bride movie. His line about "time for some thrilling heroics" is from the firefly show (not sure of the character, though, most sources say it's Jayne.) I've checked both of those.

Even the description hints at this, saying it would look good with white, the main color of Gem/the Sirens. Also, the "Spring Flower Coat" seems to be a mix of the coats the Beatles wear in Sgt. Pepper's Lonly Hearts Club Band
The description for Plate of Lime Biscuits is 'Have them with some coconut and shake it all up' which is a reference to the song Coconut by Harry Nilsson.
I should really start updating the actual guide and not the will do in the future section...
