Strange stories have been spreading through the Senan woods and marshes, and have reached the Twilight Dragon's ears at her private sanctuary, the Ice Lake. Few rumours ever reach the inner rings of Forest gossip, for who cares much for the city dwellers and their blind pursuit of gold and riches? However, for this piece of news to transcend this barrier of apathy and isolation, and be relayed to the Twilight Dragon, something major must be happening, something of grave importance.
A revolution" said the Grey Ixi, "A revolution has sprung from the fringes of the three kingdoms, and it seems they will be attacking the Kingdom of Haull first.
The Twilight Dragon had inquired further as to when the revolution would impact Senan and their kin, but it appeared that the wise Grey Ixi's sources failed to provide any news with regard to that aspect. All the Grey Ixi knew was that the Misfits planned to take down the fastidious Haull first, the defenceless Illumina second, and finally they would brutally eradicate the various Senan towns and villages one by one before declaring their conquest a success, with "peace" and "justice" having finally been restored.
Sapphero was disgusted.
Having lived eons from times of anarchy to that of the birth of the three kingdoms, Sapphero is a first-eye witness to the progress the citizens of Euphoria have made in terms of expanding their focus on basic survival, to that of more intellectually stimulating past times such as reading, learning and mastering the arts. Their dabbles in alchemy did cause Sapphero a bit of worry at one point in time (explosions in the laboratory had led to quite a few species or paint changes), but she had been certain that Euphoria was finally on the right track and had retired to the Ice Lake in the deepest depths of the Senan Forest. But for someone to want to force Euphoria into regression and carnage, Sapphero had to get to the bottom of this and put the land she created back in order.
Yes, Sapphero is the mother of Euphoria.
A long, long time ago, she was a simple mage who belonged to a small, cosy village. The village thrived on its books printing business, and the people had the luxury of being located near a lake which provided for their basic necessities. But one day, a terrible shadow came over the village- fire, fighting, death and Sapphero lost everything. The worst part of it was that the looters had destroyed an entire village for the sake of a negligible amount of gold, and Sapphero had only survived because her best friend had hidden her in their secret hideout beneath the Ancient Tree before concealing the entrance so that she could save their other friends as well. But now, they were all gone. And Sapphero was alone.
Sapphero and her friends had amassed and hidden their own private collection of books inside their secret hideout where they could train, play or learn together. They had all sniped a few advanced books from their parents and grandparents, and added these books into their collection so that they could all one day master these skills and become Master Mages of Magic and Weaponry together! So for Sapphero to seek solace in the only remnant of her past was to be expected, and for Sapphero to become a Master Mage and create an alternate dimension with people similar to those she had encountered before was spell-bindingly extraordinary.
This is the reason why the Twilight Dragon spearheaded the Elementalists but guised herself as a perspective candidate who rejected life as a faux "god" of the land, and chose to live a normal life in the peace of the woods instead. Sapphero has also helped her people along the way in secret (it does help that she can control every aspect of this dimension), and even granted the gift of magic to a few choice individuals such as the newly wedded Queen Lieas. Thus, it is not difficult to understand why the faction that wins her approval will win the upcoming war, though the bigger question is whether Sapphero will be willing to entrust the future of Euphoria to either side at all.
If you have read Sapphy's story, then you will have uncovered Euphoria's biggest plot twist- that the author of the anthology of short stories is Sapphero herself. In turn, all the adventures described are inspired by, or dedicated to her lost kin and friends.
