roxxi's layout tutorial

Welcome!

you have come across roxxi's amazing layout tutorial

Hey there! Welcome to my layout tutorial. This tutorial is made in Photoshop but it is similar in PSP. You MUST credit me. If I find people are using my tutorial without mentioning they had help from it, I WILL take this down forever.

Materials

you will need...

-Photoshop
-brushes (splats, text, swirls, grunge, etc) you can get some here.
-patterns (you can download a lot at pootato.org)
-colors (I am providing you with a pallette but your welcome to change the colors)
-fonts. 04b_03 for your credit. MA Smexy (without the m) for the guild name.
-basic knowledge of adobe
-a psd (try outspoken-kate or behindherheart.com)

COLORS

you use these or use your own

I'm using warm colors for my layout but if you want a one-colored layout like my cinderella one, just use the same color, switching it darker or lighter for each layer.

THE TUTORIAL

step one

NOTE: DO NOT MERGE THE LAYERS AT ANY TIME IN THIS TUTORIAL UNTIL I DIRECT YOU TO DO SO. open up an 800x800 base. I like them big but it won't make a difference if you use something smaller =) You can crop extra space at the end if you need too. Fill the base with the color ff7272

step two

Now we're going to do the base. Make a new layer. Change your color to 4d0c72 and stamp down brushes. I use scribble brushes, text brushes, and as much grunge as I can.

step three

Make a new layer. Use the color ff3c67. Add some brushes. I am going to add circle brushes. Usually I use my large ones on the beginning layers. Then go to blending options. Add a white, 1px stroke. And add a black outerglow (match your settings to mine.

You should have something that looks like this:

step four

Make a new layer. Change your color to 940404. Put down more circle brushes in this color, but this time you can use funky ones and small ones =) Do the stroke and outerglow in the same settings again. It should look something like this:

step five

Make a new layer. Change your color to the purple we used in step one for the base. Add plain small circle brushes and simple decorative brushes. Use the stroke and outerglow settings from step 3 and 4. This is an example of what yours could look like at this point:

step six

Make a new layer. Change your color to dfc630. We are going to be adding some swirls, more circle brushes, and some random bold brushes. This time I used the outerglow but not the stroke. Now it should look like this:

step seven

Now make sure you havent merged any of the layers. Your pallete should look like this.

Ok now we're going to add patterns. Make sure you have plenty, i get mine from pootato.org. Click the fancy 'f' to get to the blending options again and click pattern overlay. Check the box and then pick a pattern. The settings should look like this

Pick a different pattern for each layer of circles. Only put patterns on the circle layers. Once you do that it should look like this:

step eight

Ok time to add splats! I don't like to go overboard with the splats, i usually just put one on. Go to blending options. I added a 1px white stroke and a black outer glow. This is what i have so far:

step nine

Now I am changing the effects on the layers. This is why you SHOULD NOT HAVE MERGED THE LAYERS YET. Go back to your second layer of circles. I am keeping the first layer of pink circles normal. The red layer of circles I put on "soft light". The layer of purple circles I kept normal. The layer of yellow circles I put on hard light. I put the layer with the splat on overlay. Feel free to change the settings around until your comfortable with the way it looks. I turned out with this.

step ten

You can now merge your layers. YAY finally =P. I am going to add the blog box now. You can use a rectangle, heart, star, cloud or whatever you want but I am going to be using a rounded rectangle. Make sure your on white so your blog box is white. I like to change the radius of the roundness to about 50px. Go to blending options. Add a 10px purple 4d0c72 stroke. Change the fill (NOT THE OPACITY) to 60%. Dont merge the layers yet. I got my psd from behindherheart.com. I chose dakota rose. I resized the psd a little smaller and added it to my layout. I duplicated the psd layout and set it to overlay then merged the overlay and original layer together. Then I sharpened the psd. I took my lasso tool and put it on 15px feather. I outlined the bottom of the psd and deleted it so it faded. Then i took the psd layer, resized it smaller and repasted it on my layout. I rotated it a little to the right. Here is what I have.

step eleven

Credit and guild name time! I am going to add the credit first. I use 04b03 which you can download from dafont.com. Change the size of the font to 8px. Write something along the lines of this:
(C) LAYOUT BY YOURNAMEHERE PSD FROM BEHINDHERHEART.ORG (or wherever you got your psd) THANKS TO ROXXIDAHLING'S TUTORIAL!
Write that in white. Go to blending options. add a 1px stroke of purple 4d0c72. Now for the guild name. Use MA Smexy (without the m) which you can download from dafont.com. Write it in purple if your not going to change it to a gradient but if you want the color to be a gradient you can just write it in white at 90px. Now go to blending options. Add a 1px black stroke. Check off the gradient overlay. Make your own two-color gradient. The first color is purple 4d0c72 and the second is yellow fff608. Duplicate your guild name layer and set it to overlay with an opacity of 25%. Go back to blending options on this duplicated layer. Uncheck gradient overlay and stroke, and check pattern overlay. Pick a diagonal stripe pattern. MERGE ALL LAYERS.

YOU ARE FINISHED!

and now you are finished. this is my final product.

Make sure to credit me if you use this tutorial. Neomail me the layouts you make with this, Im curious to see how they turn out!
