** story **

i can't clearly remember where i came from - but i know one thing for certain: i was not, like other coyotes (even my species i am not certain of, but i seem to bear the resemblence of one), born to a mother in a litter. i was brought here at one point, a long long time ago. as long as the skies have been in existence, so to say, as i created them. the sun, the clouds, rain, snow - i control these things. my main concern is the trouble the humans cause, and when the fight among each other i send great droughts. when there is peace, the weather is lush and the harvest plentiful.

however, there are many things i don't control. most of it is up to god, but some things are left to others like myself. kayvala controls the storms, like tsunami, tornado, and hurricane. he is, so to say, much more powerful than i am and he strikes often without warning or reason in his anger fits. i try to prevent this as much as i can, but we do not get along well at all, and almost all the time my attempts are futile against his strength.

when i first came into power, i was young and careless, generally wreaking havoc.

as i aged, like all animals, i matured. the weather became more balanced, and soon animals like myself began to appear here and there. soon, the dominant species - human - surfaced. the most heartless, destructive species. they inhabit most of the planet now...

but still, here i stay, and will as long as the skies reign the earth...as they always have.

i remember so vividly a time when the humans lived in little villages...it was so quiet and peaceful for all the other animals. but then they began to kill each other. i watched helplessly as they slaughtered each other for power, each blindly willing to do anything to be stronger than his neighbor. i was furious. i suppose it was really up to god to settle this sort of thing, but i couldn't help myself. five long years no rain or snow fell - there weren't any clouds in the sky. the crops withered, the animals died, the humans starved. the civilization began to shrink back, and the humans again became a meek race. despite this, i did not let the rain take its course, as perhaps i should have...but it was then that a new force, kayvala, was born. he was such an unusual color for a dog, one knew immediately he wasn't just any animal - bright red, with black markings. i was sleeping when it first came into view: a huge, swirling gray mass in the sky. the terrible racket awakened me just as the sun was rising. i stumbled out of the cave to be greeted by the sight...all i could do was stare unconsciously at it, unable to think. what was that? i knew i hadn't sent it.

then i saw him. he was standing on a rock nearby my cave, watching me. "do you see that?" he called to me without opening his mouth. he was speaking to me with his mind - a rigid, arrogant voice. "that's what's going to save the humans. they live close enough to the shore for me to send a sea-storm to them..

.you can't do that!" i shouted, but my own tone seemed uncertain to me. "i'm punishing them for their wrongdoings-"

the dog snorted. "what wrongdoings? if the humans choose to quarrel among themselves, that's their choice. so it'll bring devastation to their civilization. but that's not our concern. our job is to keep everything alive." with that, he turned and vanished on the other side of the rock.

keep everything alive? somehow, it made sense and didn't make sense to me at the same time. now i saw his point - just because i was playing god, i was letting everything die. he was just saving them from extinction.

still, i didn't like the dog. he didn't seem to have any respect for me, even if i was older and stronger than him.

some time later while taking an evening walk through a ridge of mountains i saw a canine-like sillhouette. i edged closer, curious. she was a very small wolf, much my size; powder blue with pale pink stripes, delicate purple wings, and a white scarf. she blinked, then looked me over carefully. "hello, rayhnne, i've been expecting you," she said easily, as if we'd known each other a long time. "it's a nice time of year, the weather cooling down and the nights getting longer, isn't it? i suppose you're the one that controls the weather, aren't you? that must really be an interesting occupation to hold. as for me, i control the earth's axis and orbit. you know, when the sun rises and sets, boring stuff like that." she smiled lightly, then engaged in conversation for awhile. i realized what she must have said was true, about controlling the time of day - the sun remained exactly the same place it was the entire time we were talking.

when i rose to leave, she followed me step for step back to my cave - i guess i won't be so lonely anymore.
