my horror story...enjoy

It was a cold autumn day. The crisp leaves made a slight crunching noise as my bike ran over them. I slowed as I neared the gate of the unkempt lot; gusts of wind swayed the grass back and forth; kind of like a dance only Mother Nature could perform. The rusty old gate squeaked an eerily high pitched squeak as I pushed it inward with red hands. This was a place I called my own. Just an empty lot, except for a rotting old shack in the corner.

I walked my bike to its usual storing place in the shack, when something caught my eye. It was a small brown package, with no postage, return address or addressee. It looked innocent enough, and held a world full of curiosity. Did I dare look inside? I dared. As I threw aside the brown paper that covered it I found myself holding a blank compact disk, blank except for the six letters that wound themselves around the edge of the disk. "V-I-V-I-V-I" I muttered, "I wonder what that could mean". A gust of wind blew down my neck, giving me a sudden chill. I looked up and the sky was turning red, it was getting close to dusk. I quickly stuffed the disk into my pocket and walked my bike over to the rusty gate.

It was dark by the time I had reached my house, it was empty as usual. I took my bike to the back gate and set it leaning by the side of the house. As I entered the house, my small terrier came to greet me; but as I stretched out a hand to pet him, he started barking, growling and clawing at my jeans pocket. I ran to my room as fast as I could, with the terrier at my heels. He let out a yelp as I closed the door on his face, but he continued to claw at the door.

Smiling in an almost devilish way, I turned my back on the door. My hand automatically went to my torn jeans pocket, the disk was still there in its transparent case. I took it out if it's case and put it in my cd player. A haunting melody filled the room, and the air seemed to be getting warmer. I took off my scarf and closed my eyes for a while enjoying the warmth, until it became too hot.

I opened my eyes and walked over to the heater vent, to shut it. To my horror it was melting itself shut! Red hot, oozing, bubbling, and hissing. I looked around and other things around the room were melting. I ran to the window and tried franticly to open it, but it was stuck on its hinges. I backed to the opposite side of the room and hurled myself toward the window. It held fast as I crashed against it. I backed up, ran toward the window and hurled myself against it once more.

There was a sharp burning pain in my shoulder, followed by the rest of my body. Shards of burning glass had broken the surface of my skin. The burning was contrasted by the chill of the air on my sweaty face. Blood trickled down my arms and face blinding me as I ran from the house, the melody still ringing in my ears. Once I made my way down the street, near the dim street lamp, I looked back toward my house.

The house was peaceful until it suddenly exploded into flames, and sent something to crash near the mailbox of the house. I hesitated before running towards it. It was a dog; I knelt down and stroked the charred body of the little terrier. As I stroked his head I noticed symbols, cut into his head by a blade, V-I-V-I-V-I. My heart started to race as I suddenly realized what those letters meant.

I dodged into the hedge just before a three headed dog emerged from the inferno. It devoured the dog, its bones crunching against steel hard teeth and salivating blood. One of the heads suddenly stopped, and stared directly at the hedge. My blood ran cold as I looked into his eyes; they were endless voids of darkness. The melody grew louder and more like words, and the dog withdrew, as if callin by its master.

After the dog left I collapsed from fright and fatigue.

I woke up the next morn in a hospital bed, with pain all over my body. A nurse came in and told me that I had slept past noon. "What happened? What happened to me?" I asked. She told me that when the fire fighters had come to put out the fire, there was a trail of blood leading to the hedge, where they found me. "Oh, and they found this" she said putting a blank compact disk into the player.
