Day One on Neopets

Day one is here to explain the basics of the site to you without going into detail. Following day one, I will be going into detail on many things so be sure to continue!

I'll warn you now, this involves a lot of reading. If you hate to read, well, be prepared to be bored on the site because you'll be missing a lot of fun!

Naming Your Pets

The very first thing you need to do when you join the site is create a neopet. Neopets are the proverbial bread and butter of the site and choosing one isn't always the easiest thing to do. You need to pick a species that suits you, the gender, color and the hardest part, a name. There are over 224 million neopets on this site, so names are difficult to find.

There are a few users who've created pet pages that help you choose your pet's name but they're not always up to date, so I suggest you google the following to find your unique pet name.

Copy this and paste it into google: ALL THE FANTASY NAMES LINKS - this will bring you to a google search page. Click the first link and it will bring you to a web site that has literally thousands of names, with their meanings, to choose from. I've poked through it from end to end and there is nothing inappropriate about it in any way. I've allowed my own daughter to visit there to name her pets.

Another choice you have in choosing names is using a generator of sorts. I prefer the above way of choosing pet names as I like having meanings attached to them; however, this is a great way to go as well.

Again, open google and paste this into it: FANTASY NAMES GENERATOR - As above, click the first link and you'll be brought to a page that allows you to generate numerous fun names.

These two steps above are also great ways to find names for your side accounts! You're allowed up to 4 side accounts, that means 5 accounts all together! (Remember, you can only earn nps on your MAIN account)

After you have your pets set up, you're going to set up a PIN number. Just like a bank card, you're given the added protection of a PIN number on this site. It is very important that you set up a PIN number. It will protect your neopoints, your pets, your stocks and safety deposit box. NEVER give your pin out. I suggest you use a sibling or parents birth year or a close friend's last 4 digits of their phone # so you won't forget your PIN number. To set it up, go here and fill the information in.

The Bank

Now that you've protected your neopoints, you need a place to store them. The Neopets Team (tnt or TNT) have given you a bank to do this in and just like a real bank, the money in your account acrues daily interest! I like to put all my nps in my bank at the end of the day to make sure I get the maximum amount of interest that I can! You can access the bank by going here.

Newbie Pack

You can access your items one of two ways. First you can click on your nps

Once there, you'll see a link that says you are eligible for a newbie pack. Click it and you'll recieve some basic items that teach you how the items on the site work.

	The book is given to you for you to learn how to teach your pets to read. Click it and you'll see a pop-up box asking you what action to choose.
	The toy is given to you for you to play with your pets. Playing with your pets keep them happy, so it's a good idea to have at least 2 toys in your inventory somewhere.
	Food is given to you so that you can learn how to feet your pets. Feeding your pets keep them happy; however, you can also put them in the neo-lodge and they'll be fed there. More on that later.
	The shield is given to you so you can see how you can equip your neopet. It's not hard, but remembering how to unequip can be, I'll go into more deail on that later as well.
	This rather ugly sack is given to you so you can learn how to dress your neopet. It's icky, but it gets the job done! Click put into your closet and then click customize your neopet.
	You're given two paint brushes, they are to show you how to paint your pet. How you do this is go to Neopia Central here and click on the rainbow pool. The paint brushes will show up there for you to use.
	Keep in mind, neither paint brush can be sold, so you can put them in your safety deposit box and let them sit there out of your way.
	Petpets are given to you for you to learn how to attach them. It's simple, just click on them and click Give petpet to your pet of choice. Then click to your pet on the left of the page, this will take you to your quick reference page.
	Click on the petpet and give it a name. Then say something nice and you're good to go! Keep in mind, if your petpet is rejected, just change your language while attaching it and it will accept it. There's an odd bit of coding that makes some odd things happen.

Keep in mind, none of these items have any value at all. They're basically junk.

Item Pop-Up

The ONLY thing important about the popup that confuses new members is the Estimated Value of an item. This plushie's estimated value is 209np, that is the site's estimated value for resale, that IS NOT the actual resale value. The actual resale value of this item in user shops is less than 20nps.

Resale value of items are determined by supply and demand. If an item is easy to get, it's sold cheaply. If it's hard to get, it's sold for a high amount. Each and every item needs to be checked via the shop wizard before you try to sell it. If you plan on selling you will need to price your items lower than the average price in the shop wiz. More on that here.

Easy Games

There are well over 250 games on this site, some easy, some hard, some just pure fun. The object of games is to earn neopoints (nps), a game trophy or an avatar. Some easy games to play on your first day here are as follows:

	Spell or Starve
	This game is very easy, it has 3 levels you can choose from. Easy, Medium and Hard, so you can play at your own pace. You'll be given a certain amount of time to create a certain amount of words and it can be loads of fun!
	Pyramids
	I love this game personally. You can earn up to 5,000 (k) nps a day playing and win a trophey! The object is to just match the card dealt with a lower or higher card in the pile. So if you get a 5 of something, you can click on 4 or 6 or something and so on.
	Gourmet Club Bowls
	This game is basically shuffle board, whomever gets their bowl closest to the white ball wins. You can knock the other players (computer) bowl out of the way as well. There are more tricks to this game, you'll find out more about it here.
	Sutek's Tomb
	This game is Neopets version of Bejewled, only a lot more fun because it has bombs and the link in it. The objective is to complete as many lines of 3 or 4 as you can. If you get a bomb on your screen, you can try to drop it two spaces by doing a vertical line under it and it will blow up and give you points. Don't let it touch the bottom if you can help it!
	Swarm
	Swarm is Space Invaders with a twist. Pay attention to what is dropped when you blast something, something good may come to you like a shield or a shrinker. Keep away from the fire, it'll fry you up!

Accounts

Security

1. The most important thing for you to do is to protect your account. I cannot stress this enough, account protection should be your number one priority at all times!

The first thing you need to do is come up with a creative protection word for your account. Don't pick something obvioius like bloom01 if your user name is orlandos_girl or something like that. Keep it hard, very hard, a combination of numbers and letter. Something like this is good h34r71ov3 or some such would work. DO NOT USE THAT ONE SPECIFICALLY...it's just an example!

You should already have a PIN Number, so that's good. Make sure you set your PIN up to be used everywhere you can, this will protect your items, nps & pets.

DO NOT give your PIN or funkword out to anyone, anywhere. Not to your best friend, not to your sister/brother/cousin....no one. People on this site will tell you they need your funkword to set something up on your account sometimes, they're lying. There is NO reason at all, EVER, that another person has to access your account....for anything. Ever. Understood?

Please say you understand about not allowing anyone access to your account...ever

2. Now that we covered not allowing people into your account, I'm going to cover accidental access to your account. What's that? Simple, you forget to log out of your account and someone else gets into it.

Places this commonly happen at are the library, a family members home or a friends home. I know you'll think you can trust people, but you can't. I have no idea why, but these fake monies tend to make people change from normal, nice people and they steal them. I can't understand it, but it happens regularly here.

So the lesson here is, always log out of your account when you're not using your own personal, in your room, only you have access to, computer. Always.

3. Another accidental access is when you go off of the neopets site, visit a web site that was advertised here or though google about neopets, and they have a cookie grabber that gets your information.

The reason why tnt doesn't allow us to post off-site links is for the above reason. Too many people are not trustworthy and they come up with all kinds of ways to get your user information.

Safe Sites I know of; jellyneo, sunnyneo, neoitems and that's it. I'm sure there are many others, but those I know have nothing bad in them and are safe to visit.

Your Shop

Your shop has the potential to make you million of points, almost effortlessly! You stick an item it, price it, it sells, you pocket the money and you're good :) Sounds easy, huh? It is, you just need a bit of dedication to pull it off well.

To start, you'll need to open a shop. On the menu bar click shops and then your shop. You'll come to a page that says "You don't have your own shop yet!". On that page click edit your shop. A page with the following image will open:

Click on the image and drag it to your address bar and/or tab to view

It will cost you 150nps to create your shop. You'll be given 5 empty spaces to put item into and each time you upgrade, you'll be given 5 more spaces for items. When you first start out, a size 2 shop is good.

I suggest against coding your shop with a lot of images, many, many users leave a shop if it is too image heavy and takes longer than 3 seconds to load. They'll move onto the next shop and you lost a sale. If you wish to code, something very basic would be the best way to go. Also, no music. People like to listen to their own music and when music in a shop (or lookup or guild) comes on, it makes them angry.

Shop Wizard

Next you need to learn how to price your shop. This can be tricky to some, but it's really simple to do. I'm going to use a codestone to show you how to price correctly.

First you need to copy the name of the item you're going to sell so you can ensure correct spelling during your price search.

After you copy you want to go to the shop wizard (click here)

Paste the name of the item where it says Search Text.

Make sure Shop is clicked

Make sure identicalto my phrase is clicked then push search

You'll get a page that looks like this:

This is the shop wizard search page. Your colors will vary as I'm using a different theme than you will be. (Themes will be explained later)

The Shop Wizard (SW) Page consists of a link that is the user name selling the item in their shop. The name of the item you're searching for and the prices that the user has priced the item you're searching for.

Once you are on this page make note of the very first np amount at the top. Hit refresh on your keyboard by using the F5 button and it will refresh the page and pull up more shops. Make note of the top price again and if it's lower or higher than the other price you saw. Refresh roughly 5 times to find an estimated lowest price of the item. 6,850np seemed to be the average low price for my item, so I placed it in my shop for 100np less than that to ensure it sold.

Trades

While most don't follow this rule, the Trading Post is supposed to be used to sell items over 100k (100,000nps) and up. Many users seem to just put junk up, I'm not sure why, but I advise against it for the sole reason of if it's under 100k it will sell faster in your shop.

To start a trade click the Create a new trade! button and the following screen will show.

Ensure that you click the items that you wish to put in for trade. My items are junk, but are only used to show you how to do trades. They are NOT worth 500k.

So click the ones you want to put up for trade and in the wishlist but the value you are looking for for the item. Now, like the shop wizard, there is a process to find out the correct amount to ask for, and like the shop wizard, you are going to want to price slightly under the lowest rate.

To find an items worth, copy the name of the item and click browse trades.

Past the name into the box, click identical to my phase, then newest and then find. It'll pull up all the trades on the site. Search through them to see who has the lowest price and knock 10k off of that price. Your item should sell if it is an easy to sell item. If it's hard to sell it could take longer. Trades last 2 weeks, so there is no rush. Shops are used for quick sales, trades are meant to last a bit longer.

There are certain terms traders use that you'll find helpful to understand.

Another interesting thing about the trading post is there is a limit to how many nps you can bid while on it. The highest amount of nps you can put into trades is 800k. You can not bid more than that using your nps. You CAN bid using items though to complete a trade along with the nps.

Some items, like a Faerie Queen Doll, sell for 1.8 million nps on the Trading Post. You can pay for it by offering the user 800k in pure nps and with an item (usually a honey potion) to make up the difference.

Trading Post Scams

It's rather disgusting how many people scam on this site, the following link brings you to a pet page that goes into great detail helping you understand the common trading scams that happen on this site.

Guilds

Guild are clubs. Neopets created them so users have a place to talk to their peers outside of the message boards. The message boards were created to help users on the site, guilds are just for chatting with those you have something in common with.

Creating a successful guild is a tad bit difficult given there are so many of them available. The key elements to a guild are it's social structure and a pleasing look.

Many, many, many guilds have contests; however, these users are breaking the rules as contests are not allowed to be held by players. Some try to cover it up by saying they have activities and competitions, but the fact is it's a contest and they run the risk of getting their guild's cleared or even their account froze.

Tnt state in the rules: "So that everyone has a good time, you understand and agree that you will not post or send through the site any words, images or links containing or relating to: promotions offering prizes of any sort (including contests, raffles, lotteries, chain letters or any kind of giveaway)"

It is of course up to you on what you wish to do, I suggest not to have competitions, but I can only offer advice :)

Avatars

Avatars are used on the neoboards, guilds and neomail. They are a fun collection most users take part in and can cost you absolutely nothing all the way up to millions upon millions of nps. The rarer the avatar, the more expensive it is and harder to get.

Beauty Contest

The Beauty Contest (BC) is a 'game' that wins you a rare item, nps and your pet gains a trophy. It's a contest that is supposed to be based upon your art skill, but has become a popularity contest as well. Many users who cheat on the BC (use images that aren't theirs) get frozen, so if you enter, do your own work!

Customization/Dressing Your Pets

There are three ways to customize your pet w/backgrounds, clothes and accessories.

1. Buy from the main neopian shops or user shops
2. Buy from the NC Mall
3. Paint your pet and keep/transfer the clothes they gain when painted

	Explains how to get clothes/backgrounds etc and the way you apply them to your pets.

At first, I was NOT a big fan of customizing your pet and seen it as a waste of RL money and nps - but now, I adore it! It's so much fun decorating your pets!

Feeding your Pets

In all honesty, you don't need to feed your pets at all. If you just put them into the Neolodge for 28 days (it's cheap) you'll be fine! However, some do wish to enter their pets in the gourmet club. If you wish to join the club, here's a guide for you!

If you still wish to feed your pets and not spend the 150nps on the neolodge, you can always visit the soup faerie to feed them as long as you have less than 3k.

Pet Illnesses

Pets get sick a maryid of ways. One way is from spinning the wheel games on the site. Another is just a random event....whatever way your pet gets sick, there is a cure for it that can be anywhere from free to expensive!

The best way to avoid getting your pet sick is to put them into the neolodge. It won't protect them from the wheel diseases, but it will protect them from many of the random events. It costs roughly 150np for 28 days if you put your pet into the cockroach towers with no extras.

I didn't put nubie into the lodge to see how long it took after I made him for him to get a random illness. I logged in when he was 36 hours old and got this. Lodge is the best place for pets if you want to avoid illnesses!

Immediately after he was 'struck ill' I went to the Healing Springs and got:

If your pet gets sick you can use one of the following options:

Prices are Estimates from shop wizard and are subject to change

Prices will fluxuate because every month the wheel diseases change and the medicine to fix them will become more expensive. I really suggest just using the Healing Springs when your pet is sick if the cure is more than 10k.

Painting Your Pets

Whether you want a Baby pet, a Darigan pet, a Royal pet or a Spotted pet, you're looking to spend some serious nps on painting your pets. There are roughly 52 paint brushes for you to choose from, not to mention the chia pop colors, plushies and transmogrification potions! There are so many ways to change a pet (and I'm not even to dressing them yet) that quite a few users have created great pet pages to help you better decide what to do.

First you're going to want to be able to view how all the pets look painted.

After you pick the color you want, you need to figure out how you're going to get it. Are you going to get a paint brush, use a trans or morphing potion, use the lab ray or use a plushie?

Keep in mind, there are TWO paint brushes you cannot paint your pets with!!

They're the glass paint brush and stone paint brush. Neither works on your pets and is only used for collections and galleries. Don't confuse them.

The Bad Side to Painting Pets

Unfortunately, like in real life, there are people on this site who are willing to take advanage of your being new. They hope to feed on your lack of knowledge of pricing, paint brushes and plushies. There are some things you must know.

Paint Brush Plushies	They do not paint your pets - nor do they paint your plushies into different types of plushies. They're nothing more than toys. That's all.

How users scam using the paint brush plushies:

They hope that those who aren't 'in the know' will think it's an actual baby paint brush and will get excited and try to buy it for a bit less than the going price of an actual baby paint brush. Example: 450k or something.

They will NOT give you a price if you ask them for one. They expect YOU to bid on the item and if it's the price of a paint brush, they absolutely WILL accept and take your nps. Then they'll say they didn't scam, they just took the bid b/c it was too good to pass up...trying to act like they didn't give that impression.

Trust me, if you read something like this ANYWHERE, do some research before you buy the item...whether it be on the trading post, neomail, guild or forums.

Understanding the Lab Ray

As mentioned above, the lab ray can paint your pets. It can do many other things as well! You can get gender changes, species changes and stat changes. You can even get an avatar from it when you get a species change!

The help chat & avatar chat seem to be the only forums that currently host nightly lab ray waiting rooms. What is that you ask? Just a place for users to meet up and chat until midnight Neopian Standard Time (NST) and then they use the lab ray and list what they got from the 'zap'.

Many users seem to find these sorts of boards annoying, so it's up to you to decide if you wish to join one.

PetPets

Petpets are sweet little companions to your pet. They help keep your pet happy and just look cute and are fun to have!

There are thousands of petpets on the site when you include all the colors they come in. It's very difficult to choose one and thankfully a few people have made pet pages to help you choose!

- PetPet Lab Ray

Petpets also have their own labray, a 'machine' that 'zaps' your petpet and if you're lucky you'll get a color change or a species change. You can get name changes and your pet turned into sludge as well :(

In order to access the petpet labray you have to first have the secret laboratory map for your actual pets. Then you buy the petpet lab map piecs (roughly 10k for the whole thing) and put it together here.

A fun activity for your petpet is The PetPet Spotlight. The spotlight allows you to show your creative side and tell a background story for users to see about your special petpet.

Another petpet activity is the PetPet Protection League (PPL) - tnt picks these pets and everyone who has the petpet they choose wins nps for the amount of how old the petpet is. Example, if you have a petpet that 300 days old, you get 3000np and so on. (300 x 10 )

Both of these activites give you a trophy in your cabinet.

Earning Nps

Daily Clicks

A daily click, also referred to as dailies, is an area of the site you should visit every single day. Ideally one would do these as soon as they logged into their account.

Some wonderful daily click pages can be found below. They include both daily clicks and guides to earning nps. I suggest bookmarking your favorite one and using it daily to keep track of what you've done.

There are many ways to earn nps and games seems to be the main way. There are well over 250 games on the site. There are 4 types of games:

3. HTML - Requires nothing
4. 3-D - Requires 3D Life Player

Stocks

A slow way to make nps is stocks. I'm not a particular fan of stocks as I like to make 'fast' nps, but it is absolutely possible to make millions using the market.

Do Not's:

DO NOT - Sell items that can be sold in your shop via the Trading Post. It's a waste of time and space. Items under 100k sell FASTER in your shop than on the Trading Post.

DO NOT - Use the Trading Post as a place to store items you are not going to trade. It's against the rules and a waste of space for users looking for items.

DO NOT - Make 'free' trades. There's no such thing. If you have junk, donate it to the money tree or sell it cheap in your shop.

DO NOT - Blindly accept an offer

DO NOT - Advertise on any forum except for the Trades and Auction Forum, it's rude to advertise on other forums.

DO NOT - Trust ANYONE, even nfs. Double check all prices, all the time.

Do's:

DO - Check the price of the item you are selling in both the trading post AND the Shop Wizard. Unfortunately, some will lie to you about the resell value.

DO - Check the price of ANY items offered on your trades, whether it's offered via the Trading Post or neomailed to you. Check BOTH the TP & SW.

DO - Sell your items priced at the lowest going rate.

DO - Advertise on the Trades & Acutions Forum, you'll get more looks

TP Forum

You'll notice in the TP forum that people are constantly looking to buy and sell things. What you don't see is help given to those who are confused...because most don't bother to ask. ASK. If you're confused ASK on the TP forum what you should do. DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED!!!

You'll see many threads stating "BUYING with 3 million" these are people who are usually looking for deals and are called 'resellers'. Pay close attention to these people, not all of them are honest.

You'll be asked to post in normal format wich is:

Restocking

Restocking is the best way to make nepoints on the site. You have the potential to make millions of nps a day if you get good at it!

Sniping

This is my absolute favorite way to make nps. I adore sniping, I think it's the whole hunt for a bargin and get it before others do aspect of it that appeals to me.

Sniping can be done via the shop wizard, auctions & trades. It basically means; find an item that's been mispriced, buy it and resell it at full value. Items that are normally mispriced are the ones found in random events and luck/chance games.

Example: Codestones, Paint Brushes, Potions, Faeries, Dubloons, Nerkmids and Map Pieces. I sniped my entire lab map for my side account and ended up paying less than 200k for the entire thing.

Some users may feel this is unethical to do, profiting off of anothers mistake. If you find this to be wrong....just don't do it!

Malls

Malls are a complete and utter waste of nps if you buy from them. They're overpriced and hose new players. With that said, if you want to own one, you can make a lot of nps. But you need a very large shop, size 50 or larger and a lot of people willing to work with you and pay nps for you to put an add on the notice board.

Each person will have a specialty; maps, quest items, food, clothes, magic items, battle items etc and you all help each other stock. If you find a lab map, you give it to the map person, if you're running the quest shop, they send you a quest item. It's all rather...not kosher to me. It seems like buying and selling for services but tnt allows it.

Just, DO NOT, offer to pay people to shop for you or offer to pay people to be in your mall. I don't see that being allowed.

Coding

User Lookups

Everyone and their Gramma wants a good user lookup. It expresses who you are to those who visit your lookup and just makes you happy to have one!

I prefer to create my own layouts and artwork; however, not everyone knows how to do that. Because of this I am including a section here on how to create graphics and the coding you'll need to use!

Another option is to use premade lookups and there are some FABULOUS layouts out there for you to use! Just KEEP the credit in, stealing graphics/coding is a very bad thing to do and tnt does freeze for it!

Pet Pages

The page you are currently viewing is a pet page. It's neo's answer to webpages so users do not have to go off-site to gain help with tutorials and whatnot. Aside from jellyneo, sunnyneo and neoitems, I prefer to use ONLY petpages and if it can't be found on those sites or a petpage, I don't have anything to do with it.
